Understanding the concept of 讝拽谉 in the Patriarchs

Anyway, we're getting back here. Yitzchak Avinu was a 讝拽谉 讜讬讜砖讘 讘讬砖讬讘讛, he was living in yeshiva. 砖谞讗诪专, 讜讬讛讬 讻讬 讝拽谉 讬爪讞拽, it says the word 讝拽谉 by Yitzchak. Yaakov Avinu was a Yaakov Avinu was in yeshiva. Every time it says that one's 讝拽谉, 讝拽谉 means really, not old. It means old also, but it means Eliezer the 注讘讚 of Avraham was also learning in 讬砖讬讘讛, 砖谞讗诪专, 讜讬讗诪专 讗讘专讛诐 讗诇 注讘讚讜 讝拽谉 讘讬转讜. He told his 注讘讚, the 讝拽谉, the 讝拽谉 of his house, 讛诪讜砖诇 讘讻诇 讗砖专 诇讜, which controlled everything of Avraham. What does it mean controlled? He controlled, in other words, he ruled, he was baki in the Torah of his Rebbe. And when the pasuk says 讛讜讗 讚诪砖拽 讗诇讬注讝专, what does 讚诪砖拽 讗诇讬注讝专 mean? He used to draw and give the Torah of his Rebbe to others. I

Rav Yoel鈥檚 story about the International Date Line

always told the story with Rav Yoel. I don't know if I ever told it before, Rav Yoel the 专讘讬'住 讞讜讝专. So Rav Yoel told me that the Rebbe once first spoke about the inyan of going over the 拽讜 讛转讗专讬讱. If you go over the international dateline during Sefirah, you have to count your own Sefirah and then you have your own Shavuos. And that was the Rebbe spoke about it 转砖讻\"讟, I think. A few years later, he said Shavuos came out on Sunday, Sunday and Monday, so 注专讘 砖讘讜注讜转 was Shabbos. So he had a guest, someone asked to take a guest for Shabbos, for Yom Tov, so three days it's. So Friday night, they were sitting by the meal, and Kiddush, they ate, and during the meal, the guy was telling him that he's came came from Australia. He happened to be an 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇'讚讬拽注专, and he it was one day 讬讜诐 讟讜讘 讘讻诇诇, and came from Australia. So Rabbi Yoel tells me, so he made a cheshbon according to what the Rebbe spoke last time, today is his 注专讘, but by us is 注专讘 砖讘讜注讜转, by him it's Yom Tov, Shabbos, which was 砖讘转, 注专讘 砖讘讜注讜转. Can you do that again? What year was that? This was 讻\"讛 讘讗讬讬专. The first the Rebbe spoke, I think But this was already a few years later. So he says, he told the guy, according to the Rebbe's p'sak, tonight is Yom Tov, so first of all, you have to daven Shemoneh Esrei over, because you davening Shabbos Shemoneh Esrei, you should Shavuos, Yom Tov are you. Second of all, you gotta make Kiddush over. And you ain't gotta make the meal over because it wasn't you weren't yotzei the Yom Tov, anyway, that was a joke. Anyway, the next That Friday he was maskim to it right away, right? He was maskim to everything. The next day, he went over to the Rebbe, they waited by the door when the Rebbe came out anyway, and he asked the Rebbe, and the Rebbe said, \"Yeah, today is Shavuos.\" So he asked the Rebbe, but b'foal, according to the month, it was not 讜' 住讬讜谉. It's 讛' 住讬讜谉. But it doesn't matter, Shavuos doesn't depend on the month, Shavuos depends on 50 days from Sefirah, so by him it's 50 days Sefirah. But b'foal,

Halachic debate on Shavuot dates and

Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch paskent that in those years when Shavuos could come out 讛', 讜', or 讝', depends if Nisan and Iyar were 诪诇讗, 讞住专, sometimes it came out on 讛'. The Alter Rebbe says if it came out on 讛' or 讝', you didn't say 讝诪谉 诪转谉 转讜专转谞讜. You would daven, those who daven, say 讬讜诐 讞讙 讛砖讘讜注讜转 讛讝讛, but they wouldn't say 讝诪谉 诪转谉 转讜专转谞讜, because it wasn't the day of 诪转谉 转讜专讛, 诪转谉 转讜专讛 was 讜'. So he asked the Rebbe, should he say in 砖诪讜谞讛 注砖专讛 讝诪谉 诪转谉 转讜专转谞讜 because it's 讛'? Now, the Rebbe didn't want to answer, didn't answer. Because the siddur is different than the Shulchan Aruch, of course. No, no, no, the siddur doesn't speak about it. So he didn't answer. So he wanted to know, so Rav Yoel tells me he like asked again. So again, the Rebbe took out his handkerchief, he didn't want to answer. So he pressured, he asked a third time. And when he asked the third time, and the Rebbe said, \"Yeah, you shouldn't say. You shouldn't say, because it's 讛', you shouldn't say.\" This and this, what happened then, and that's it. It's a few months later, at least, he was thinking about it, he said, it started bothering him, the chutzpah, not chutzpah, but that he had to pressure the Rebbe, like he's pressuring him, the Rebbe didn't want to answer, and he asked again, and he asked again. So, okay, he got an answer, but it's bothering him. I think it was that 讬讜\"讚 砖讘讟, by a farbrengen, in between the sichos, you know, he says he doesn't know why, but his mind wandered away, you know, okay. So this came to his mind and he started thinking in his mind, Rav Yoel, he told me this, started thinking in his mind, why did he have to do that? He doesn't know why it came, but it was something that was really bothering him. But then he thought to himself, but maybe he didn't do wrong, because he's the chozer, and he used to write the sichos, so maybe it's gonna be noga to write the 专讘讬'住 驻住拽, so he asked it, not for himself, he asked it pashut, noga to know. Oh, the olam was the one that can pressure... Yeah, Rav Yoel pressured him. No, no, Rav Yoel was speaking to the Rebbe, and Rav Yoel asked and about. So he was thinking just like this, and you can stay, you know, the Rebbe sat on the bimah, he's down, he's down here. So as he's thinking, and they're singing the nigunim, someone gives him a knak, \"The Rebbe is calling you.\" So right away he jumped up. The

Pressure on the Rebbe and the Mashke lesson

Rebbe gave him mashke, and the Rebbe said to him, \"住'讗讬讝 讚讗讱 驻讗专 讚讜诇讛 讜诪砖拽讛 诪转讜专转 专讘讜.\" In other words, the Rebbe read his 诪讞砖讘讜转. And in 诪讞砖讘讛 he was bothered, did he do the right thing or not, but then he thought maybe I did the right thing because after all, I take the Rebbe's Torah and I write it, so maybe it's 谞讜讙注. So as he's thinking, the guy calls that, the Rebbe gave him mashke. L'chaim. Which means you, like it says here, you take the Rebbe's Torah and you give it to others. Oh, I see. So the Rebbe like to tell them you can, whatever he did, but he said as he's thinking those words, the Rebbe gave him. Okay, right there. So we learned we learned here in this place when we learned that sugya, we learned it with you Rabbi, that sugya. He said that that Rabbi Yosi paskent that that 诪转谉 转讜专讛 was 讜'. But we don't pasken like that. We don't pasken like that. Of course Magen Avraham says we do. But the Alter Rebbe says, I mean Magen Avraham says we do, the Alter Rebbe says we don't. The Magen Avraham says what? That we do pasken that it was 讝'. What do we pasken this? What's nafka mina lema'aseh? Yom Tov is Yom Tov. Nafka mina lema'aseh is The whole din of 讜住转讜转, how much that he has to wait is The whole reason why we wait, went through that last time when we learned, wait five days when a woman gets her period, five days. Why? Because you don't know, maybe she'll be 驻讜诇讟转 砖讻讘转 讝专注, and that is only good for six 讜住转讜转, six 注讜谞讜转, which is three days, and then we're so we're afraid whatever. This is only according to Rabbi Yosi, because Rabbi Yosi there was three days that they had to wait for 诪转谉 转讜专讛. Why? Because they should wouldn't be According to the 专讘谞谉 you only wait two days. So here we see clearly we pasken like Rabbi Yosi that we have to wait three days. B'foal it turns out to be four, it turns out to be five, aber it's all based on this. So there's a big So Rav Nechemia, Rav Dovber ben Rav Nechemia takeh says that even according to the Alter Rebbe it comes out that we pasken that it was 讝'. Aber the Rebbe that's not a pshat, and 讚注专 专讘讬 讗讬讝 诪讻专讬注 the Alter Rebbe clearly it's on 讜'. And the emet is we we say it's 讝诪谉 诪转谉 转讜专转谞讜 because of 讜'. But this And see it's a huge machloket. It is, it is. This This guy, interesant, he kept Shabbos Yom Tov. So if you're at least there in chutz la'aretz, so the second day, his second day was our first day. He kept one day Yom Tov. So Erev Yom Tov was his Yom Tov, the other two days Shavuos was by him not Yom Tov. And this This is a big controversy. This is something that the Rebbe's chiddush, and the other rabbanim questioned it, and it is and but not that it makes a big difference, but Blumenkrantz in his book Blumenkrantz with the with the Pesach book? Yeah, he paskens like the Rebbe, he paskens like the Rebbe. He says that if you cross the dateline, you have to keep your own Shavuos. Shavuos is not what everyone He doesn't even bring the Rebbe. I mean, I'm sure he knew, otherwise. Whatever, he brings it, others hold not like that. Anyway, okay, going back to the point of the Gemara.

Gemara on Abraham keeping the entire Torah

Before we're saying Avraham learned Torah, but here it says not only that, he did all the mitzvot. Because 讗砖专, because Avraham listened to my voice, means he listened to me. How do you know that meant that he kept the Torah? Oh. Maybe that means he did what the Aibershter wanted him to do, he was kept the 砖讘注 诪爪讜讜转. Said the 讙诪专讗, 讛讛讜讗 讗驻讬诇讜 诪讬诇讛, you can't say 砖讘注 诪爪讜讜转. He had more than 砖讘注 诪爪讜讜转, he had the mitzvah of milah. Maybe 转讗拽注 means that, 砖讘注 诪爪讜讜转 and milah. It says like this, he listened to my voice, and what did he do? What is that? If it's So that must be that he kept more. He kept, he wants to say not only the 诪爪讜讜转 讚讗讜专讬讬转讗, but even the 诪爪讜讜转 讚专讘谞谉, even 注讬专讜讘 转讘砖讬诇讬谉. Remember? Who created Shlomo Hamelech who made that? Right. And other things which later they made. All the all the 诪爪讜讜转 讚专讘谞谉 were made by 讘讬转 砖谞讬, even later. Few were made before. But Avraham kept all the mitzvot that all the chachamim will say, 讗驻讬诇讜 注讬专讜讘 转讘砖讬诇讬谉, which is a small mitzvah. What kind of two Torah? Even the 讚讘专讬 住讜驻专讬诐 he kept. So he read megillah? Mordechai vaEsther for sure. He read the megillah? Yeah, he read the megillah on Purim. Avraham had one day 讛讗? Avraham would kept one day Yom Tov. He kept one day Yom Tov? That was blank. He lived in He lived in Eretz Yisrael. So he didn't have Eretz Yisrael not. But when he was in Mitzrayim, maybe he kept two days. If you didn't go over the dateline, then You could have an Not in one day, in Israel? Yeah, for sure, if it's Friday, Yom Tov is Friday. How How often does Yom Tov fall on Friday? When Yom Tov is Friday, then you can have There's one thing he didn't I think maybe Pesach, it's the only Yom Tov. There's one thing it was impossible for him to keep. The day of Tisha B'Av comes out What? There's one thing it was impossible for him to keep. Esther was 讙讜讝专 a 转注谞讬转 on Pesach, so he would have to eat Pesach on But we don't do that either. Nobody mourn like that, we don't fast on Pesach. No, he only kept the mitzvot, he didn't keep things that happened. Did he fast on Tisha In Zohar it says that it wasn't all 讻驻砖讜讟讜. Zohar says that the tefillin that he put on was not pashut the tefillin. When he made the 诪拽诇讜转, the sticks there to get by the That was Yaakov? Yaakov, that was the tefillin. That was the same 讛诪砖讻讛 as tefillin. So that's 注诇 驻讬 讝讜讛专. In other words, he kept it all, but not 讘讙砖诪讬讜转. But 诇驻讜注诇, 诇驻讜注诇, the 诪爪讜转 诪讬诇讛 was the only one that he kept 讘讙砖诪讬讜转 and the seven mitzvot, yeah? Huh? According to the way it says in the Zohar, but if you learn without the Zohar, peshat, pashut, he did all the mitzvot. Even Lot baked made 诪爪讜转, 讻驻砖讜讟讜 is, doesn't mean he gave him 讘专讜讞谞讬讜转 he gave him matzot. Huh? Is celebrating an event that hasn't occurred. Yeah, he did. He keep Pesach? First of all, is a 讙讜讬 诪讞讜讬讬讘? If he wasn't before the Torah, he was But Rashi says that he left, that it says that that Terach died even though he didn't, no one should complain that he didn't keep If he's not mechuyav to keep 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘, why is he mechuyav? Then why does Dama ben Netinah keep 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘 if he wasn't mechuyav? Yeah, that's a good kashya. And we praised him, the Gemara praises him, the goy. Is a goy mechuyav? A ger

Obligations of a 讙讜讬 regarding 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘

can keep his 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘 for his father? Says miderabbanan he is. 砖诇讗 讬讗诪专讜 that he 讘讗 诪拽讚讜砖讛 讞诪讜专讛 诇拽讚讜砖讛 拽诇讛, it says he's mechuyav miderabbanan. But is a goy is a is a goy It's not one of the seven mitzvot. So there two two inyanim here. One peshat is the Ramban learns that 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘, any mitzvah that falls into the geder of Shabbos, that it's for the civilization of the world, a goy is mechuyav. Because of that, we know that there goyim have We say seven mitzvot, it's not seven. It's, I think, 45. They're called the 砖讘注 诪爪讜讜转 and the se'ifim and the senifim. These are all senifim, branches of the seven. Seven are the main ones, but there are others. But 讻讬讘讜讚 讗讘, because it's part of civilization, so therefore a goy is mechuyav, but not as a separate mitzvah. Where does it include it? So the Ramban learns it's included in dinim. What are the seven mitzvot? The seventh one of the cheshbon is to keep courts, to have a judicial system. So the Ramban says this is not only a judicial system, this includes all kinds of things that have to do with with civilization. 诇诪砖诇 爪讚拽讛, they're mechuyav in tzedakah? Well, so if not mechuyav in tzedakah, why do they complain to Sodom? Sodom didn't do tzedakah at all. Sodom made an aveirah to give tzedakah. Good, so that so They said that's an aveirah. In other words, that's extreme and that's against civilization, so that's why they're... That's not what the pasuk says. The pasuk in Nach
