Parshas Bereishis
Why the sixth day of creation, the very day of the chet eitz hadaas, earned the description 'tov meod,' and what that says about the singular power of teshuvah.
Part of Bereishit
Addresses the difficulty of the Torah calling the sixth day of creation very good when that same day saw the sin of the eitz hadaas and all its consequences. Following the Midrash's reading of tov meod as referring to the yetzer hara, explains that the possibility of aveirah followed by teshuvah, capable of turning zedonos into zechuyos, reaches a level that a straightforward tzaddik never touches, since it alone carries the maalah of drawing light out of darkness.

A vort of the Rebbe for Parshas Bereishis. When the Torah tells us about the different creations that took place on the first days, so at the end of every day, almost every day, it says that Hashem saw that what He did was good. On the sixth day it also says, 讜讬专讗 讗诇拽讬诐 讗转 讻诇 讗砖专 注砖讛 讜讛谞讛 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, 讛砖诐 saw everything that He made was very good. But the Rebbe asks a question: How can you say that what happened on the sixth day, everything was very good, when the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转 took place on the sixth day? The Gemara tells us in Sanhedrin 讚祝 诇状讞, beginning of 注诪讜讚 讘壮, that the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转 took place on the sixth day of creation. And that was a terrible thing. The 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转 brought the gezeirah of misah, the decree that people should die. It brought the tzaar, the pain, the labor pains of a woman, the pains of pregnancy, and all other kinds of bad things. So how can you say that after all that, Hashem said that 讻诇 讗砖专 注砖讛, everything that He did, was 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, was very good? The kashya is even stronger. The other days it just says the word 讟讜讘, He saw that what He did was good. On the sixth day it says 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, very good. Now the sixth day was the day of the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转. So be'emes it's not only not very good, it's not good bichlal, but certainly not very good. So how come on the sixth day when we had the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转, that's when the Torah says that whatever He did was 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, very good?
So the Rebbe says, to answer this, we have to bring you what the Midrash says in Bereishit Rabbah on the 驻住讜拽 讜讛谞讛 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, on this pasuk where it says that Hashem saw everything that He did was 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, very good, it says like this: 讟讜讘, 讝讛 讬爪专 讟讜讘. Good is the 讬爪专 讟讜讘, obviously, the good inclination. 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, the 诪讗讜讚, very good, that's the 讬爪专 讛专注, which is also very hard to understand. How can we say on the 讬爪专 讛专注 that the 讬爪专 讛专注 is 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, the 讬爪专 讛专注 is very good? It's obvious that he's not.
So Chassidus explains that the reason for that is, why we call the 讬爪专 讛专注 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, because through an aveirah, which comes because of the 讬爪专 讛专注, a person could reach a very high level, the level of teshuvah. And the teshuvah is so great that it even changes over aveirot into mitzvot. And that's 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, that's very good, greater than 讟讜讘. If you listen to the 讬爪专 讟讜讘 and you do good, and you do mitzvot, etc., etc., it's very good, it's good. But there is no maalah of 讬转专讜谉 讛讗讜专 诪谉 讛讞讜砖讱, which means the maalah of bringing light out of darkness. But if you have the yetzer hara, and you chas veshalom listen to the yetzer hara, but then you do teshuvah, then you reach a much higher madregah, then it's 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, then it's very good. Like the Chazal say: 讘诪拽讜诐 砖讘注诇讬 转砖讜讘讛 注讜诪讚讬诐, 讗讬谉 爪讚讬拽讬诐 讙诪讜专讬诐 讬讻讜诇讬诐 诇注诪讜讚. In the level where 讘注诇讬 转砖讜讘讛 stand, 爪讚讬拽讬诐 讙诪讜专讬诐, complete tzaddikim cannot stand there. And this is the maalah that comes through the avodah of teshuvah that comes through the yetzer hara. That's the inyan of 讝讚讜谞讜转 谞注砖讜 诇讜 讻讝讻讬讜转, that the aveirot that you did 讘诪讝讬讚, the aveirot you did intentionally turned into mitzvot. And that's why we say 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚. What's very good? That is the yetzer hara. So the Rebbe says the same thing we could explain here, why on the sixth day it says 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, even though on that day the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转 took place. The first days till the sixth day, everything was created through Hashem, and it was good, the 转讻诇讬转 讛讟讜讘 讜讛砖诇讬诪讜转. That's why it says 讜讬专讗 讗诇拽讬诐 讻讬 讟讜讘, He saw it was good. But this 讟讜讘 that was there did not have the maalah yet of 讬转专讜谉 讛讗讜专 诪谉 讛讞讜砖讱, means the darkness that comes out of, light that comes out of darkness. That's a very high madregah, that didn't happen on the first days. And that only took place on the sixth day, when there was a 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转, and it brought, Adam HaRishon that brought teshuvah to the world, that is 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚. So therefore, davka on the sixth day, when the person was created with the yetzer hara, and not only the yetzer hara that tries to convince him to do aveirah, but he actually did the aveirah, but then he came to the maalah of teshuvah, so that brought a greater good into the world, something that's very special. And that's why on the sixth day it says 讜讛谞讛 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚, that what happened on the sixth day could bring a person to the highest madregah, to the best, very good. And this is what we read on the first Shabbos of the year after Simchat Torah when we start reading the parshah again, is to give us the guide for the whole year, that we have to know that everything we do is good, and we have to do good, but if chas veshalom a person does an aveirah, and then does teshuvah, he should know then he reaches the level of 讟讜讘 诪讗讜讚.
