BEREISHIT

Parshas Chayei Sarah

How the gold nose ring and bracelets Eliezer gave Rivka carry a hidden remez to Matan Torah and machatzis hashekel.

Part of Bereishit

Eliezer's gifts to Rivka — a half-shekel nose ring and two bracelets weighing ten gold shekalim — are read as a remez to the Aseres Hadibros and the mitzvah of machatzis hashekel. Since the marriage of Yitzchak and Rivka carries the koach for the later union between Hashem and the Jewish people at Matan Torah, every detail of Eliezer's gift turns out to encode that future moment, down to why the Torah insists on giving only a half-shekel rather than a whole one.

Eliezer's Gifts to Rivka and the Kli Yakar's Question

A vort from the Rebbe on this week's parsha, Parshat Chayei Sarah. In Parshat Chayei Sarah we find that after Eliezer, the עבד of Avraham, realized that Rivka is the one that's going to marry Yitzchak, it says, ויקח האיש נזם זהב בקע משקלו, the man, so Eliezer, took a gold nose ring which the weight was a beka, which is a half a שקל, ושני צמידים על ידיה, and two bracelets on her hands, עשרה זהב משקלם, their weight was ten shekalim. And Rashi says, why did he give her this, the way the Torah describes it, is בקע רמז לשקלי ישראל. Beka, that this nezem zahav was the weight of a beka, which is a half a shekel, it's a remez for the mitzvah of מחצית השקל that the Yidden later on will give the mitzvah of מחצית השקל, give every year a half a shekel. And shnei tzamidim, the two bracelets, is a remez for the two luchot. And the fact that they weighed ten golden shekalim is a remez, a hint, for the Aseret Hadibrot, for the Ten Commandments. And the Kli Yakar asks, what's the connection between the shekalim and the luchot to this inyan of the marriage of Yitzchak and Rivka? This is a marriage of Yitzchak and Rivka. Why is this a remez, what's it got to do with the inyan of of the Aseret Hadibrot and of the shekalim? And also, what's the connection between the shekalim and the luchos together? And the Kli Yakar goes into an arichus to explain the inyan.

Marriage as a Symbol of the Union Between Hashem and the Jewish People

But the Rebbe explains as it follows. We know what it says in sefarim, and chasidus especially elaborates on it, marriage bichlal is a hint for the marriage of the Eibershter and the Yidden, Hashem and the Yidden. The Eibershter, Hashem, is the chasan, and the Yidden are called the kallah. Especially the marriage of Yitzchak and Rivka, because we know מעשה אבות סימן לבנים, whatever happened to the Avos is a sign and a נתינת כח, it gives the strength for the children, for the Yidden later to do what they're supposed to do came from the Avos. So Yitzchak being one of the Avos, so his marriage with Rivka certainly is a koach for the Yidden. And since marriage represents the union between a chasan and a kallah, which is the union between the Eibershter and the Yidden, so therefore, these things that he gave is a remez for Matan Torah, because the marriage of Yitzchak and Rivka represents Matan Torah. Because when did the marriage of the Eibershter and the Yidden happen? By Matan Torah. So here, when the marriage of Yitzchak and Rivka took place, or something in connection to the marriage, there are certain things here which are connected to Matan Torah, because this is the נתינת כח, this is the מעשה אבות סימן לבנים of the marriage of Eibershter and Yidden, which is Matan Torah. And that's why it's connected to the Aseres Hadibros, to the two לוחות, because that was מתן תורה. When the ענין of the לוחות and עשרת הדיברות were there by מתן תורה. That's why this is what he did here. Also, the fact that he gave her something that had the weight of a half a shekel, which is supposed to hint to מחצית השקל, is also connected to this. Because by מתן תורה what happened? That's when the marriage of the Eibershter and Yidden happened, which is the union between the Eibershter and the Yidden. The union of the Eibershter and the Yidden by מתן תורה is so strong that it's almost as if we would be saying that the Eibershter and the Yidden together make up one unit. So each one is, so to speak, kivayachol half. And that's the reason it says why the Eibershter said to give a מחצית השקל, it says in sefarim, it says especially in Chassidus, is usually the Torah wants complete things, not half things. And the reason is because this is supposed to show that the Yidden that give their half a shekel, because they're only half, and the other half is the Eibershter. So the מחצית השקל represents the union between the Eibershter and the Yidden.

The Two Trumpets and the Deeper Meaning of Machatzis HaShekel

It's similar to what it says the Eibershter told Moshe Rabbeinu to make the two trumpets. And the pasuk says he said to him, עשה לך שתי חצוצרות כסף... זהב, כסף, make two trumpets. But the Maggid said, the Mezeritcher Maggid says חצוצרות come from the two words חצי צורות, a half of a form, a half of a צורה, saying that this means that the Yidden and the Eibershter each one are kivayachol half. And the same thing is the ענין of מחצית השקל, that it represents the union of the Yidden and the Eibershter, they become one unit that each one is half. And that's why by this ענין of Yitzchak and Rivkah, which is in connection to their marriage, which is representing and the מעשה אבות סימן לבנים of מתן תורה, when the Yidden and the Eibershter became one, he gave her this נזם זהב which is בקע משקלו, the weight of a half a shekel, to represent this inyan of מתן תורה, that over there the Yidden and the Eibershter became united so much, as if saying that the Yidden are half, and the Eibershter is the other half.
