Parshas Vayeitzei
Why Yaakov's Maariv lands last among the Avos' tefillos though night comes before day, and how the two purposes of davening, becoming batel to Hashem and asking for your own needs, resolve the order differently.
Part of Bereishit
Works through the contradiction between the pasuk describing tefillah as starting in the evening and the fact that Yaakov, the last Avos, established the last tefillah, Maariv. Splits davening into its bittul side, mirrored by the order of kodashim, and its bakashas tzarchei side, mirrored by the order of maaseh bereishis, so that Maariv can truthfully be called both the first tefillah of the day and the last.

A ืืืืจื from the ืจืื on this week's ืคืจืฉืช, ืคืจืฉืช ืืืฆื. In the beginning of ืืืฆื it says, ืืืคืืข ืืืงืื, that ืืขืงื ืืืื ื met up with the place. But ืจืฉ\"ื says, ืจืืืชืื ื ืคืืจืฉื ืืฉืื ืชืคืืื, that ืืืืื say that this means he davened there. And ืจืฉ\"ื adds, ืืืืื ื ืฉืชืืงื ืชืคืืืช ืขืจืืืช. This teaches us that ืืขืงื ืืืื ื established this ืืฆืื of davening ืืขืจืื. Now, since he was the third from the ืืืืช, and he established ืืขืจืื, that means it comes after the first two. ืืืจืื established ืฉืืจืืช, ืืฆืืง established the ืืฆืื of davening ืื ืื, and ืืขืงื established the ืืฆืื of davening ืืขืจืื. But the question is, we know that usually the day comes after the night, so really it should be the opposite: ืืขืจืื should be the first. ืืขืจืื is from the night. And actually there's a ืคืกืืง that the ืืืจื brings concerning davening: ืขืจื ืืืืงืจ ืืฆืืจืื, that davening is in evening, morning, and afternoon. That means it ืืืงืข starts from the evening. So ืืขืจืื should be the first ืชืคืืื, and after that comes ืฉืืจืืช and ืื ืื. But nevertheless, we see here that ืืขืจืื is the last one.
So the ืจืื says that they're both true. Depends from which angle. Davening has two things in it. On one hand, davening is a time when you communicate and you connect to ืืฉื. It's a time when you you ืืืื yourself to ืืฉื. That's why we find that when ืืขืงื saw the ladder, it says, ืกืืื ืื ืฆืืืชื, it says in ืืืืจ, that the ladder represents davening where you go up. It's a time when you go up, get closer to ืืฉื. You're ืืืื, you get rid of your ego, of your ืืฆืืืืช, and you become one with ืืฉื. That's the ืขื ืื of davening. That's why the ืืืจื refers to davening as ืขืืืื ืฉืืื. It's a service of the heart, when you feel closer to ืืฉื. On the other hand, the simple ืคืฉื of davening is a time of ืืงืฉืช ืฆืจืืื. It's a time when you have to ask ืืฉื for your needs. If someone needs health, he has to ask for health; if someone needs money, ask for money; whatever a person needs in his physical life, or any type of thing, but it's all his personal needs, that's the time to daven. So this seems like two opposites. On one hand, it's a time to get rid of your ืืฆืืืืช, of your ego, of your things that you needโit's not you, it's about getting close to ืืฉื and getting rid of yourself, of your own ego. And on the other hand, it's a time when you care about your own self, about your ืืฆืืืืช, and you ask for your needs. And the answer is that yes, davening has both angles to it. Davening is a time when, on one hand, you get closer to ืืฉื, but at the same time, there's an ืขื ืื in davening that is connected to your ืืฆืืืืช.
Now, the ืืืจื tells us that when it comes to ืืขืฉื ืืจืืฉืืช, which is the creation of the world and the things of the world, then ืืืื ืืืื ืืืจ ืืืืื, the day goes after the night. But when it comes to ืงืืฉืื, to ืงืจืื ืืช, to sacrifices, which is ืงืืฉืื in the ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ, there the ืืืื is that the night comes after the day, because whenever you could bring the ืงืจืื, the time you could eat it is the day and then the night after, etc., anyway, the night comes after the day. And these are the two things here. The part of davening that is a ืืืืื to ืืฉื, that's the part of ืงืืฉืื. So therefore, the night goes after the day. So then ืืขืจืื is the last one, cuz this is the davening, that part of the davening you connect to ืืฉื. But then the other part of davening, that you care about your ืืฆืืืืช and that's a ืืฆืื, the ืืฆืื is to care about yourself and ask ืืฉื for your needs, from that angle, ืืขืจืื is the first, because when it comes to ืืขืฉื ืืจืืฉืืช, the ืืืจื says, to worldly matters, there the day goes after the night. And therefore, ืืขืจืื is the first. So there are these two aspects, and the question is only how do they two fit together. There, and ืืกืืืืช explains how they two fit together, but this is the point of the two ways we consider ืืขืจืื as the first ืชืคืืื of the day or the last ืชืคืืื of the day.
