Parshas Vayigash
Yosef's insistence on announcing โHashem made me rulerโ before summoning his father ties directly to the deeper purpose of the galus: gathering up the world's hidden sparks.
Part of Bereishit
Questions why Yosef bothered mentioning his own rulership over Mitzrayim when all that mattered was getting Yaakov to come down. Traces the promise at the Brit Bein HaBesarim that the Yidden would leave with โgreat wealth,โ and rejects the simple reading that this was mere compensation for hard labor, since the Yidden themselves would gladly have skipped the money for an earlier exit. Lands on the teaching that the wealth carried out of Mitzrayim was full of nitzotzos hakedushah waiting to be elevated โ and that Yosef's rise to power was the mechanism making that elevation, and therefore the whole galus, possible.

A vort of the Rebbe on this week's parashah, Parashat Vayigash. In the parashah we learn that after Yosef identified himself to his brothers, he told them: go to my father, and tell him to come here. And the way the pasuk says it is that Yosef said: tell my father, ืื ืืืจ ืื ื ืืืกืฃ, this is what your son Yosef said, ืฉืื ื ืืืงืื ืืืืื ืืื ืืฆืจืื, Hashem made me the ruler over all of ืืฆืจืื, ืจืื ืืื ืื ืชืขืื, come down to me and don't wait. And the Rebbe asks the question: the main thing that he meant to say was that I'm here, let him come here to me. Why did he mention in this point that Hashem made me the master, the ruler over all of Mitzrayim? The main thing he should have said: ืื ืืืจ ืื ื ืืืกืฃ, ืจืื ืืื, come to me. Why is it nogea to mention, that's not the point, the main point is not that. Why so why does he mention Hashem made me the ruler over Mitzrayim and that's why come down to me? And the Rebbe answers like this: When Hashem told Avraham Avinu by the Brit bein habetarim that the Yidden will be in galut, He said to him like this: Your children are going to be strangers in a land that's not theirs, ืืขืืืื ืืขื ื ืืืชื, and they're going to make them work very hard, ืืืืจื ืื ืืฆืื ืืจืืืฉ ืืืื, and then they're going to come out with a great treasure.
Now simple peshat is that this is compensation. Since they're going to work hard, I'm going to compensate them to go out with a lot of gold and silver, to go out with a great treasure. But Chassidut says that that's not the main peshat. Because as the Gemara says that when the Oibershter told Moshe Rabbeinu: Go tell the Yidden that they should borrow kelei kesef, kelei zahav, golden kelim, vessels, silver kelim, and He said to Moshe Rabbeinu: Because they have to do it, because if they don't, Avraham Avinu will have complaints. He'll say that the first part you kept, when you said that they're going to work hard, that you kept, and ืืืืจื ืื ืืฆืื ืืจืืืฉ ืืืื, they're going to go out with a great treasure, you didn't keep. So please tell them to do this. And when Moshe Rabbeinu came to the Yidden and told them, the Yidden said to him: We don't mind not to go out with money, the main thing get us out here. And the Gemara even gives a mashal, a mashal of a person that was in jail, and he was told that tomorrow you're going out of jail and you're going to get a lot of money. So he answers: I don't care about the money, get me out today, I'd rather go out today and not get the money. And that's what Yidden tayneh't, and lichorah it's a good ta'anah. Aye, the kashya that Avraham Avinu is going to complain? Avraham Avinu will also understand that, that it's better to go out earlier without the money. The money is not the point here. So why did the Oybershter say ืืืืจื ืื ืืฆืื ืืจืืืฉ ืืืื? So chassidus
explains that this is not just a compensation, but this is the whole purpose of the galut. Going out ืืจืืืฉ ืืืื means going out with the ื ืืฆืืฆืืช ืืงืืืฉื. We know there are holy sparks in the world that have to be elevated and purified, and they are found mainly in the ืืฉืืืืช'ืืืงืข things, in the gold and the silver, the wealth a person has there are ื ืืฆืืฆืืช ืืงืืืฉื, and you got to take them out. And Mitzrayim had a lot of these ื ืืฆืืฆืืช ืืงืืืฉื in their wealth, and not only that, in Mitzrayim came the wealth of the whole world, because it says ืืืืงื ืืืกืฃ ืืช ืื ืืืกืฃ, Yosef collected all the silver, the whole money, so the Midrash says ืื ืืืกืฃ ืืืื ืฉืืขืืื, all the silver and gold of the whole world, because when there was a hunger and they came to buy the food in Mitzrayim, from all over the world they brought their treasure to Yosef. So Yosef had basically the wealth of the whole world, and by Yidden going out with that wealth, and then later on using it for the building of the Mishkan and using it for kedushah, that was the ืืืจืืจ ืื ืืฆืืฆืืช. And ืขื ืคื ืืกืืืืช and ืขื ืคื ืงืืื, the whole purpose of ืืืืช ืืฆืจืื was to elevate these ื ืืฆืืฆืืช ืืงืืืฉื. That's why it says when they went out of Mitzrayim, ืืื ืขืจื ืจื ืขืื ืืชื, that even a ืขืจื ืจื, which means a mixture of a lot of people of other nations came out with them. So ืงืืื ืืขื ื'ื, says peshat, ืจื is ืจ\"ื. Bichlal, it says in Kabbalah that 288 ื ืืฆืืฆืืช are in this world and we have to elevate them, and when that's finished Mashiach will come. When the Yidden went out of Mitzrayim, they took out 202 of the 288, and were left over with 86 from thence till now, and when that'll finish Mashiach will come. And so that means that the whole purpose of the galut is to go out with the ืจืืืฉ ืืืื. That's why even though the Yidden would forego it, but the Oybershter wanted it and Avraham Avinu wanted it that this should happen, and that's why He said let them go out with the ืืื ืืกืฃ, ืืื ืืื of Mitzrayim. Now, because of that, Yosef told them to tell Yaakov that I am the ruler over Mitzrayim. What he meant to say is: now that I'm the ruler over Mitzrayim, now you're able to fulfill what the Oibershter wanted, that there should be a ืจืืืฉ ืืืื and you'll be able to take it out. If Yosef wouldn't be the ruler over Mitzrayim, Mitzrayim wouldn't have have the ืจืืืฉ ืืืื. It's only after Yosef became the ruler, and Yosef was the one that sold the food, and they were able to collect all the money, and the Yidden went out, so now they were able to fulfill this ืืฆื ืืจืืืฉ ืืืื. And this is what Yosef said, now you could come down. Coming down is going to start the ืืืืช, ืืืืช ืืฆืจืื. Now we are ready to start the ืืืืช ืืฆืจืื for the purpose of ืืืจื ืื ืืฆืื ืืจืืืฉ ืืืื, because I am the ืืืื ืืื ืืฆืจืื, I'm the ruler over Mitzrayim. And this is the pshat in the pasuk: ืื ืืืจ ืื ื ืืืกืฃ, tell Yaakov, tell my father that his son said: Hashem made me the ืฉืื ื ืืืงืื ืืืืื ืืื ืืฆืจืื, ืืฉื made me the ruler over Mitzrayim. Ah, so now it's already time and there is an ability of starting the ืืืืช to accomplish what the ืืืืช is supposed to accomplish, therefore ืจืื ืืื ืื ืชืขืืื, come down to me and don't wait. And this is a lesson to us also for this ืืืืช. This ืืืืช is also to take out the nitzotzos. And we're still working on it, so we have to remember that the more we deal with elevating the gashmiyus, using the gashmiyus for kedushah, the faster the nitzotzos are elevated, and the faster Mashiach will come. And this is the lesson that we should do the avodah of ืืืจืืจ ืื ืืฆืืฆืืช more, and that will bring the ืืืืื ืฉืืืื ืืงืจืื ืืืฉ.
