BEREISHIT

Parshas Vayishlach

How staying a stranger by Lavan for twenty years is what let Yaakov keep all 613 mitzvos.

Part of Bereishit

Rashi offers two readings of Yaakov's word garti to Esav: that he remained a mere ger by Lavan, never rising to importance there, and that garti shares the letters of taryag, hinting that he kept all 613 mitzvos despite Lavan's influence. The connection between them is the point: precisely because Yaakov never let himself feel at home or comfortable in Lavan's house, he was able to keep every mitzvah without absorbing his ways. The same principle applies to a Yid in galus, staying aware that this is not our true place is exactly what keeps us from being pulled in by it.

Two Peshatim on 'Garti': Stranger and 613 Mitzvos

A vort from the Rebbe on this week's parsha, Parshat Vayishlach. In the beginning of the parsha it says that Yaakov sent malachim to Esav, and he said to them 讜讬爪讜 讗讜转诐 诇讗诪专, and he told them this is what you should say, 讻讛 转讗诪专讜谉 诇讗讚谞讬 诇注砖讜, this is what you should tell Esav: 讻讛 讗诪专 注讘讚讱 讬注拽讘, this is what your servant Yaakov said, 注诐 诇讘谉 讙专转讬 讜讗讞专 注讚 注转讛, I lived with Lavan and I was late, stayed till now, 讜讬讛讬 诇讬 砖讜专 讜讞诪讜专 爪讗谉 讜注讘讚 讜砖驻讞讛, and I have a 砖讜专 讜讞诪讜专, etc., etc. What does this all mean? So Rashi says on the words 注诐 诇讘谉 讙专转讬, Rashi says, I lived there and I'm still a ger. A ger is a stranger. So Rashi says what he was telling him, 诇讗 谞注砖讬转讬 砖专 讜讞砖讜讘, 讗诇讗 讙专. I never became, it's an officer there, became important there. By Lavan, I was a ger. Mimela Rashi says you should not feel bad about the brachot, because I'm only a ger there. And then Rashi says 讚讘专 讗讞专, another pshat, that 讙专转讬 讘讙讬诪讟专讬讗 转专讬状讙. 讙专转讬 is gematria 613. And the emet is it's not just gematria in the number, it's the same letters, actually. 讙专转讬 is made up of the letters 转 专 讬 讙. So he was telling him that, 讻诇讜诪专 注诐 诇讘谉 讛专砖注 讙专转讬, I lived takeh by 诇讘谉, 讜转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转 砖诪专转讬, and I nevertheless kept the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转, the 613 诪爪讜转, 讜诇讗 诇诪讚转讬 诪诪注砖讬讜 讛专注讬诐, I didn't learn from his bad actions. So we have two pshatim here in Rashi what the word 讙专转讬 means: one is that I remained a ger, a stranger there, and another pshat is that I kept the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转, I was by Lavan takeh and I had all kinds of obstacles and hardships, and nevertheless I kept all the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转 and I did not learn from him. So these are two separate pshatim, but we know that the Rebbe says always that when you have two pshatim or more on one word or on one 注谞讬谉, they have a connection.

The Connection: Staying a Ger Kept Him From Getting Comfortable

And here the Rebbe explains, very simple, the connection between these two pshatim: what he was telling him that you know why while I was by Lavan I still was able to keep the mitzvot, the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转, is because I was there as a ger. He was by Lavan, he was there for 20 years, and he nevertheless stayed a ger. Usually, when you come to a place, in the beginning you feel strange, not comfortable, but after a while you get used to it and it becomes okay. Had Yaakov become comfortable by Lavan, it would make it harder for him to keep the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转. The only reason he was able to keep the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转 is because being by Lavan, he was not comfortable, he felt that this is not his place. And that's why when he felt that all the gashmiyusdike things and all the ta'avot that are there by Lavan are not for him, he feels uncomfortable there, then you could keep the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转. The moment you start feeling comfortable, it's bad. And those are the two things he said to him: I was a ger by Lavan, constantly a ger, not a toshav, not a set established person, I felt uncomfortable, I felt strange, and that's why, the second pshat, I kept the 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转.

The Lesson for Galus: Staying Uncomfortable Protects Us

And this is the lesson for a Yid: when we're in 讝诪谉 讛讙诇讜转, we have to feel uncomfortable in galut, and then we're able to not get 谞转驻注诇 from the galut, not get influenced by the galut. It's the same way we say in the Haggadah that when Yaakov and his children came to 诪爪专讬诐, 诇讙讜专 讘讗专抓 讘讗谞讜, he said we came 诇讙讜专, to live here, but live here in form of a ger. So if they would not be that way, they would start feeling comfortable, they could get influenced and fall into the trap of everybody else, and learn from the ma'asim of the Mitzrayim. So they the reason, but when they came they said 诇讙讜专 讘讗专抓 讘讗谞讜, we came to stay as a ger. And the same is 讘谞讜讙注 a Yid 讘讻诇诇 in galut, that we have to remember that this is not our place, our place is with the ge'ulah, our place is in Eretz Yisrael with 诪砖讬讞 爪讚拽谞讜. In the meantime, we are here, but because we feel uncomfortable, we are able not to learn from the ma'asim of the galut. And this is what Yaakov told Esav: 注诐 诇讘谉 讙专转讬, I'm a ger, and that's why 转专讬状讙 诪爪讜转 砖诪专转讬, that's how he was able to keep the mitzvot.
