Intro: Rebbe's Vort on Parshat Acharei

from the Rebbe on this week's parsha, Parshat Acharei. The parsha starts with the words וידבר ה' אל משה אחרי מות שני בני אהרן, השם spoke to Moshe after the two sons of Aharon died, בקרבתם לפני ה' וימתו, when they got close to Hashem and they died. So ויאמר ה' אל משה, so Hashem said to משה, דבר אל אהרן אחיך, speak to your brother אהרן, ואל יבא בכל עת אל הקדש מבית לפרכת, he can, should not, he's not allowed to go in whenever he wants into the קודש, which means into the Holy of Holies. The only time he could go is on Yom Kippur, and only with specific korbanot, etc., etc. And to explain that, Rashi says, why does the pasuk say that Hashem spoke to Moshe to say to start and after two sons of Aharon died? So Rashi gives a mashal. If you want to tell somebody to be careful of something, so a mashal of a person who is sick, he goes to a doctor, and the doctor tells him, because you're sick, do not eat cold stuff, and do not lay in a damp place. Came to another doctor, and the other doctor said the same thing to him, do not eat cold and do not lay in a damp place, and he added, you should not die like this and this person died. The second one made him more careful than the first, because the second one, he told him actually that if you do it, you could die like that person died. So same thing here, too, when the Oibershter wanted to tell Aharon that he should not go into the קודש, so he made it like the second part of the mashal, that he didn't just tell him don't do it, he added, don't do it because you see your sons died because of that. So it's like in the mashal that the second doctor told him don't do this and this and this, so you shouldn't die like this and this person died. That's why the pasuk says אחרי מות שני בני אהרן. But the

Rebbe Questions the Sick-Person Mashal

Rebbe asks a question, why does Rashi have to give the mashal of a choleh, of someone who is sick? The same thing would be by a healthy person. When a healthy person gets advice how to behave, so one person could tell him, don't do this, don't eat this, etc., etc. Then you can have another person telling him, don't use this and this, and don't eat that and that, because someone else died when he did that, and the second one was mazhir him, made him be more careful than the first. So the same mashal could be here also. Why did the Oibershter tell Aharon, tell Moshe to tell Aharon not to go into the קדש הקדשים, and this happened after the two sons died, so he's telling him don't do it so you shouldn't die like that person died, could be by a healthy person, too! That when you want to make a healthy person be careful in a certain thing, if you tell him don't do it because somebody else died from it, it's much stronger than if you wouldn't add that second statement. So why does Rashi have to give a mashal to a sick person? And the Rebbe answers, because Rashi wants to make the mashal should fit to the nimshal. It's a mashal to Aharon. Why would we suspect that Aharon would go into the קדש הקדשים, that he has to tell him don't go in, and he has to warn him not to go in? Because going into the קדש הקדשים, you get closer to Hashem. The קדש הקדשים is the place of the Shechinah. Aharon was such a great tzaddik, he had such a great ahavah to Hashem, a great love to Hashem. So bifshut, he would want to go in as much as possible into the קדש הקדשים. When a person has a great love to something, and he would like to get it, as long as he doesn't get it, we could see a person be sick from not doing it. Actually, there's a lashon that we say it, and it's a lashon in a pasuk in Shir Hashirim, it's called חולת אהבה, being sick from love. There is such a thing when you love something and you don't get it, until you get it, you pashut physically get sick. So Aharon, the reason why we are afraid he might want to go into the קדש הקדשים, because he is חולת אהבה, he has this, so to speak, he's sick out of love to Hashem and he wants to go in. That's why the Eibershter wanted to warn him. But he wanted to warn him much stronger, so he said, don't go in because you shouldn't die like your sons died. So this answers the question why Rashi gave the mashal of a choleh, not stam a mashal of a person, because he wants to make the mashal fit to the nimshal, that in the nimshal we're talking about that Aharon would want to go in because he we assume he was sick out of love, that means he loved Hashem and whatever he could get to love Hashem, to show his love for Hashem more, he would do it. That's why Rashi gives a mashal of a sick person, that when a sick person is sick, the doctor tells him don't eat certain things and don't lay a certain place, so you shouldn't die like that person died, is stronger. So that mashal

Conclusion: Why the Sick Mashal Fits Aaron

fits to Aharon, who was also a choleh and he would probably want to do this, and the Eibershter told him, through Moshe Rabbeinu, don't do it so you shouldn't die like that person died. But we understand why Rashi picked the mashal of a choleh, because that fits more to the case of Aharon, who in this case he's like a חולת אהבה, because he had the love to Hashem so much that he would be sick and might want to go in, so the Oibershter wanted to warn him very strongly that he shouldn't do it.
