PESACH

Pesach

Why 'you will serve Hashem on this mountain' describes the true, ongoing purpose of Yetzias Mitzrayim — a climb through the limitations of plant, animal, and human intellect that ends only in complete bittul at Har Sinai.

Part of Pesach

Hashem's words to Moshe at the burning bush link leaving Mitzrayim to arriving at Har Sinai, describing not a simple sequence of events but a single unfolding process. Mitzrayim represents limitation in general, and the shiur traces rising levels of transcending limits — a plant's growth, an animal's movement, a human's intellect — showing that even Torah and mitzvos performed through one's own reasoning remain, in a sense, still bound by the self. Real Yetzias Mitzrayim is reached only through kabbalas ol and becoming meshubad to Hashem, which is what began at Matan Torah.

From Yetzias Mitzrayim to Har Sinai

A vort from the Rebbe on this Shabbos, which is שבת חול המועד פסח. בנוגע Yetziat Mitzrayim, Hashem said to Moshe Rabbeinu, the first time he spoke to him by the סנה, by the burning bush, he said to him, בהוציאך את העם ממצרים, when you will take out the Yidden from מצרים, תעבדון את האלקים על ההר הזה, you will serve God on this mountain. He said it when Moshe Rabbeinu was standing on Har Sinai. Which means that when you go out of Mitzrayim, eventually you are going to come to Matan Torah. You're going to come to this mountain, and you'll worship Hashem, serve Hashem, which is the inyan of Matan Torah. Now, the simple peshat is he's just telling him the sequence of events. You're going to go out of Mitzrayim, then after that you'll go to Matan Torah, etc., etc. But the Rebbe says you could explain it in a much deeper way. What the pasuk is trying to say, that when you go out of Mitzrayim, this process of going out of Mitzrayim will continue as a process till Matan Torah. So when he said you will go out of Mitzrayim, he's trying to tell you, what is this going out of Mitzrayim? That eventually the real going out of Mitzrayim will be when you get to Matan Torah. How is it?

Mitzrayim as limitation, from plants to intellect

So the Rebbe explains it like this: This concept of Mitzrayim, it says in Chassidus and other sefarim also, doesn't only mean the country Mitzrayim. Mitzrayim is limitations. They make person limited, or whoever it is, as a limitation of how how every things are limitation, how far things go, limitations that a person has. Going out of Mitzrayim means going out of its limitations. Now, there are different levels in going out of limitations. Just an example, the Rebbe says: Plants, what does it mean by them a plant goes out of its limitations? If it's able to grow, if it's able to become bigger, it means it's really limited to what it is. The fact that it's able to become bigger is already called going out of Mitzrayim, going out of its limitations. Now, an animal that could have all kinds of food and have everything, able to grow, it's still not going out of its limitations. What's called going out of limitations by an animal? If an animal's able to move. As long as he can't move, he's still in his limitation. By him, by an animal, going out of the הגבלות is that he's able to move. A human being, the fact that he's able to move is not enough. That's not called going out of his limitation, going beyond the limitations. Even if he has everything, he has to have the ability of understanding of an intellect. And when he goes to the level of intellectual, that he has the intellect in his mind, so then that's called going out of his limitations.

Why even Torah study on one's own terms is still a limitation

Now, a Yid goes beyond that. Going to have intellect, to have sechel and understand things, that's still not going out of his limitations. Since a Yid has a neshamah, a Yid has to go to a higher level of going out of limitations. Even the limitations of chokhmah is still called a limitation, even if he has chokhmah. Going out of limitations by a Yid is Torah. Torah is completely beyond. But even by a Yid, the fact that he learns Torah is still not the real going out of limitations. Because if a person who is a limited being learns Torah and does mitzvot, serves Hashem, but it's all based on his understanding and his reasoning, on his טעם ודעת, as Chassidut calls it, and on his כוחות, on his abilities, it's still a limitation. He still did not go out of his limitation, which is called Yetzias Mitzrayim. Because he's still under the limitation of who he is, who he is, and he's a limited human being. So his understanding and things that he does, even Torah mitzvot, is still limited. What is the real and complete Yetzias Mitzrayim, going out of the מצרים וגבולים, with the limitations by a Yid? When you go out beyond any limitation, and that is only when you serve Hashem because you are batel to Hashem, kabbalat ol malchut shamayim, accepting the yoke of Hashem לגבי דער אויבערשטער, like an eved to his master, like a servant, like a slave to his master, they don't have a metziut for himself. So when a person learns Torah and does mitzvot based on this complete bitul, then he goes out of the real limitations, and he becomes connected to Hashem, and Hashem is bli gvul, so he becomes in the level of bli gvul.

Becoming meshubad to Hashem at Har Sinai

And this is what the pasuk says: I will take you out of Mitzrayim all the way to the highest level of going out of the מצרים וגבולים, till תעבדון את האלקים על ההר הזה, you will serve Hashem on this mountain. And what was the beginning of Matan Torah? אנכי השם אלקיך אשר הוצאתיך מארץ מצרים. Hashem said, \"I am your God who took you out of Mitzrayim.\" And Rashi says, what does that mean? כדאי היא ההוצאה שתהיו משועבדים לי, the taking you out of Mitzrayim is worth it, is for the purpose of you should be meshubad to me. Meshubad to me, you have no life, no entity of your own. You are meshubad to Hashem. And that's what the pasuk meant here, that when you will go out of Mitzrayim, you're still not going out of Mitzrayim if you just go out of the land. The Eibershter is saying, tell them that there will be the complete going out of Mitzrayim, that תעבדון את האלקים על ההר הזה. תעבדון comes from the word עבד, you will work, serve Hashem on this mountain in a form of עבדות, and that means you are not a מציאות for yourself. That is the real Yetzias Mitzrayim. And that's what the pasuk means, בהוציאך את העם ממצרים, when I'll take you out of Mitzrayim, it's not going to stop there, because just going out of Mitzrayim is one little level. It'll go all the way to תעבדון את האלקים על ההר הזה, you will be an עבד to Hashem, which will start off with Matan Torah on this mountain, and that is the real level of Yetzias Mitzrayim.
