Nivul Peh and Its Severe Punishments

we're holding here 讻\"讛 on top. Siman 讻\"讛, yeah. All the way on top, yeah. We're still talking here in this Gemara, unfortunately, about all those things that terrible things, aveirot that people do, that that might cause different different punishments. Different punish- do we want to call it results, it depend- no, yeah. The results are not so nice. Yeah. Result of punishment. Okay. Yeah. No, because one of the things somebody asked the other day, you talk, \"Deserve to die, that for that aveirah, it's not such a big aveirah as 诪讬转讛.\" Well, it's a result. Okay, we'll see here. 讘注讜讜谉 谞讬讘讜诇 驻讛, for the aveirah of speaking nivul peh, speaking not nice words, 爪专讜转 专讘讜转 讜讙讝讬专讜转 拽砖讜转 诪转讞讚砖讜转, a lot of tzarot and a lot of gezeirot become renewed, 讜讘讞讜专讬 砖讜谞讗讬 讬砖专讗诇 诪转讬诐, and young Jews, but the Gemara doesn't want to say 讘讞讜专讬 讬砖专讗诇, so we say 讘讞讜专讬 砖讜谞讗讬 讬砖专讗诇. But it means 讘讞讜专讬 讬砖专讗诇 and that young people will die. 讜讬转讜诪讬诐 讜讗诇诪谞讜转 爪讜注拽讬诐, orphans and widows will cry, scream to the Eibershter, 讜讗讬谞诐 谞注谞讬诐, and won't be answered. Hashem will not be happy with the young, 讜讗转 讬转讜诪讬讜 讜讗转 讗诇诪谞讜转讬讜 诇讗 讬专讞诐, wow, and the 讬转讜诪讬诐 and the 讗诇诪谞讜转 He will not have pity, Hand Stretched: Decrees Reversed by Nivul Peh

What else is there that he's speaking about? That he means he wants to be merabeh that not stam if a person speaks nivul peh, you get punished or this is the result, but even something more. 讗诪专 专' 讬讜讞谞谉 讘专 讗讘讗, this is what it means: 讛讻诇 讬讜讚注讬诐 讻诇讛 诇诪讛 谞讻谞住讛 诇讞讜驻讛, everyone knows why a 讻诇讛 gets married, 讗诇讗 讻诇 讛诪谞讘诇 驻讬讜, anybody who speaks about it and speaks outright, 讗驻讬诇讜 谞讞转诐 注诇讬讜 讙讝专 讚讬谉 砖诇 砖讘注讬诐 砖谞讛 诇讟讜讘讛, even if the 讗讬讬讘注专砖讟注专 had sealed a decree for good for his 70 years, 讛讜驻讻讬谉 注诇讬讜 诇专注讛, Hashem could change it for the bad. And what's the chidush here? The chidush here is even if it's something everyone knows. Sometimes we think nivul peh to speak nivul peh, something you shouldn't have spoken, it's something that people don't know, but here, it's not lashon hara even or 砖拽专, but some things nivul peh there is no reason to speak. But here, when you speak about somebody going to the chuppah, everyone in their mind knows anyway what's going to happen, so what's the big deal if some guy said it? And even that, this is how terrible it is. Does this punishment love that, happen to him, or it's a penalty of the whole group? Well, no, so Well, yeah, the youngsters will die. In general, it's a gen- it's a general claim uh clause for uh And if a lot of people do it, yeah, it could affect Klal Yisrael. It doesn't mean only the person who does it. It could be. Excuse me, is someone I don't know one, but if it's various Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, this is a lot lot of times, you get What it says if 谞讬转谞讛 专砖讜转 诇诪砖讞讬转, 讗讬谞讜 诪讘讞讬谉 讘讬谉 爪讚讬拽 诇专砖注, then it's, you know, innocent people get hurt. Even by the 讞讜专讘谉 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, the chiddush was there, that the Eibershter said to the Satan, the Gemara says, it's talking later on in Shabbos, that the tzadikim, the good people will not get hurt. And in the end, they did. And this is a 讞讬讚讜砖 谞驻诇讗, because normally we know if the Eibershter gives a decree for something bad, I mentioned about the chiddush the other day, the Eibershter can change His mind. If the Eibershter says something bad will happen, He changes His mind. If the Eibershter says something good will happen, He doesn't change His mind. And here, the Eibershter said that the tzadikim, the good people would not get hurt, and He changed His mind. It's a chiddush. It's the only exception. Good can get better, though. Well, that's called, so 诇讙讘讬 the better, it's not so good, but from good to bad, that the Eibershter doesn't change. The Rambam paskent on 砖讗诇讜转, you kind of feel The Rambam paskent, yes, that's It seems to be The beginning of it on 砖讗诇讜转, the Eibershter won't change if it's good. Right, right, that's a klal. Yeah. No. That's That's not a promise that the Eibershter promised. Gezeirah is not a promise. Eibershter pronounced... Zogt di Gemara weiter, 讗诪专 专讘讛 讘专 砖讬诇讗 讗诪专 专讘 讞住讚讗, 专讘讛 讘专 砖讬诇讗 讘砖诐 专讘 讞住讚讗, 讻诇 讛诪谞讘诇 驻讬讜, anybody who is gets his mouth if it's, you know, not so good, says not good things, 诪注诪讬拽讬谉 诇讜 讙讬讛谞诐. We deepen the 讙讬讛谞诐 for him. The Eibershter deepens the 讙讬讛谞诐. Even though you didn't say anything, but your mouth didn't say anything, you should have made a protest when you heard someone say, and you didn't protest, and you heard it, you kept your mouth shut, already der Eibershter will punish. 讗诪专 专讘 砖砖转, 专讘 砖砖转 said, 讻诇 讛诪注专讛 讗转 注爪诪讜 诇注讘讬专讛, anybody who empties his himself out to do an aveirah, which means goes to do an aveirah, usually aveirah, the general word aveirah in Gemara means zenut. That's what it means, adultery. But that, 讞讘讜专讜转 驻爪注讬诐 讬讜爪讗讬谉 讘讜, you'll get all kinds of blisters and things like that, wounds. 讞讘讜专讜转 驻爪注, these are wounds, 转诪专讬拽, will be emptied, 讘专注, to the bad. Not only that, the punishment you'll get is 讛讚专讜拽谉.

Stomach Affliction as Aveirah Sign

What kind of punishment is 讛讚专讜拽谉? Yeah, a punishment that starts off in the stomach. In the stomach. You'll have a makah, right there it says, for aveirot you'll have a makah inside the stomach. If you see somebody have 讛讚专讜拽谉, it's a siman that this guy is on aveirot. And why is 注讘讬专讛 讚讜讜拽讗 with zenut, again like we learned before, because zenut is from inside the stomach, mimela this is the punishment in the stomach. Talking about adultery? Adultery, yeah. Thought the punishment is death. Yeah, no, that's beit din. That beit din will punish. If not der Eibershter, but der Eibershter will do... I mean I know the word adultery usually in English means davka to a married woman, right? Yes, adultery. Actually, but this means any any 讝谞讜转. So what is 讝谞讜转 in English? Immorality. Immorality, promiscuity. Promiscuity, that's exactly what it means, yeah.

Three Forms of 讛讚专讜拽谉: Thick, Bloated, Thin

There are three kinds of this 讛讚专讜拽谉, of this sickness of the stomach. If it's because of an aveira, your stomach gets thick. 砖诇 专注讘, if it's because of, you could happen because you didn't eat, you're hungry, 转驻讜讞, it gets blown up. I guess it's different. Thick is thick, and this is blown up, it's like a balloon. Huh? Yeah, the stomach blows up. 砖诇 讻砖驻讬诐, and if it's from magic, from black magic, 讚拽, then it's thin. Thin, right? Thick, thin. Shmuel Hakatan had 讛讚专讜拽谉, and it was thick. In other words, people will look at me, and know what are they going to say? So, 诪驻讬住 means who's going to cure me? Rashi says who's going to open it up? Who's going to change it? Who's going to do something to fix it, to heal me, that people shouldn't say that I did aveirot, because that's why they say it's a siman. So when he asked der Eibershter for this, 讗讬驻住讬, he got healed. Yeah, so they shouldn't think it. What is this thick stomach, a thin stomach? I mean, I'm sure it is. You can have a stomach blown up and it's thick, like a thick thing, then you can have blown up and it's like a balloon. But it blows up, and persons from hunger, like he said, these children in Africa, you see these pictures, the stomach is blown up, it's not fat, not fat a lot, it's just air a lot, so it's blown up. So why did it happen to Shmuel Hakatan? We don't know. They wanted to show you that tzadik is... Yeah, that's what I want to see, yeah. More people had. 讗诪专 专讘讗, Rava said, 讬讚注谞讗 讘讬讛 讘谞讞诪谞讬, I know about about 讗讘讬讬, 讚诪讻驻谉 谞驻砖讬讛, the reason is because he starved his, because he hungers himself, he keeps himself hungry, and therefore it happens. So I know for sure there's no there's nothing to be afraid that it's because of an aveira. Rava also felt it. Okay. Gemara, now why did Rava feel it? If he definitely didn't do aveirot, ela mai, because he was not eating, that's not true either, because 专讘讗 讛讜讗 讚讗诪专, because Rava said, 谞驻讬砖讬 讻住讬诇讬 拽讚专讗 诪谞驻讬讞讬 讻驻谞讗, that there are more people who are die from 讛讚专讜拽谉 because of hunger than those that die from are blown up from hunger. A pot, you know what you want to say? A 拽讚讬专讛 is like a 诇砖讜谉, a 诇砖讜谉 of a pot, a 诇砖讜谉 of a 拽讚讬专讛, because it pours like a 拽讚讬专讛, it comes out. So, he said what he said, 谞驻讬砖讬, 专讘讬诐 讛专讜讙讬 讚拽讘讜专讬诐, it makes it no, okay, more people die from sickness inside the stomach than they die from hunger. In other words, Rava was not for it of dying from hunger, of making himself hungry. And Rashi says, and we also see that from the fact that he when he criticized, not criticize, he said about Abaye: I know Abaye, he doesn't eat. as if saying that Rosh says, as if it's not the right thing. So l'maaseh Abaye Rava did eat. He wasn't hungry. Rava did not do 注讘讬专讛. So why did that happen to him? And there's another case. There's a possibility of holding yourself in from going to the bathroom. Which Rava said you shouldn't do that, either.

The Cost of Delaying the Bathroom

Rava said that you die faster from not from holding yourself from going to the bathroom than from being hungry. You get more So m'meila he could have said that, too. So he definitely ate because he criticized Abaye, he definitely didn't hold himself back in, he definitely didn't do 注讘讬专讛, so why did he have this 讛讚专讜拽谉? The Gemara answers, \"No. 砖讗谞讬 专讘讗 讚讗谞住讬 诇讬讛 专讘谞谉.\" He 转拽讬 held himself back, not because he wanted to, because the the the 转诇诪讬讚讬诐 used to bother him so much, and used to ask him questions that they push didn't give him a chance to go to the bathroom. M'meila that's what he had, and that's why he got sick. somewhere it says that if you empty yourself out, what does that mean? Go to the bathroom? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, before you go to the Yeah. Why would it be degrading for him to go out in the middle of his lectures? I don't know if it's the middle of his lectures. It could be in the middle or it was when after the lecture, they stopped and they talked to him, I don't know. I don't know. It was It was in the middle of a 注谞讬谉, you know? Why did they finish the 注谞讬谉? \"住讬诪谉 诇注讘讬专讛 讛讚专讜拽谉,\" a 住讬诪谉, like we said before, a for an 注讘讬专讛 is this 讛讚专讜拽谉. \"住讬诪谉 诇砖谞讗转 讞谞诐,\" a 住讬诪谉 that a person has 砖谞讗转 讞谞诐, hatred for no reason, is 讬专拽讜谉. Green? Yeah. Green. It means probably you get yellow. You get What's it called? Jaundice, that's the English word for it. \"住讬诪谉 诇讙住讜转 讛专讜讞,\" a 住讬诪谉 for a 讘注诇 讙讗讜讛 is 注谞讬讜转, is that you get poor.

Lashon Hara Leads to 讗住讻专讛: Throat Illness

住讬诪谉 诇砖讜谉 讛专注 讗住讻专讛 is sickness that comes in the throat. You mean poor in Torah, no? Huh? Poor in Torah. You're poor? In Torah, in the Torah learning. Ah, that's Rashi's Rashi. Rashi said that The Gemara in Kiddushin says, \"In this case, it means poor in Torah.\" Yeah. No, that's what Rashi says. No, when it No, when it says that a 住讬诪谉 for 讙住讜转 讛专讜讞 is 注谞讬讜转, it's not 注谞讬讜转 in money, it's 注谞讬讜转 in learning. What does that mean? That you forget your learning? Yeah, I guess so. M'hat a farshtapte kop. You can't learn it. You learn, and you don't understand it. 转谞讜 专讘谞谉, 讛讗讘谉 讝讬讬 讙注诇注专谞讟, \"讗住讻专讛 讘讗 诇注讜诇诐 注诇 讛诪注砖专.\" 讗住讻专讛 comes to the world, other people get 讗住讻专讛 if they are not careful with maaser, which means they eat their 驻讬专讜转 without taking off maaser, eating 讟讘诇. Who says this? Let's see the name here. It's No, this is the first opinion. Rabbi Elazar says for lashon hara, which also makes sense like we said before, for the mouth. Where do we see a pasuk that tells us this? It says like, it's like \"讜讛址诪侄旨诇侄讱职 讬执砖职讉诪址讞 讘值旨讗诇止讛执讬诐 讬执转职讛址诇值旨诇 讻指旨诇 讛址谞执旨砖职讈讘指旨注 讘旨讜止 讻执旨讬 讬执住指旨讻值专 驻执旨讬 讚讜止讘职专值讬 砖指讈拽侄专\". So we see \"讬执住指旨讻值专 驻执旨讬\", 讬住讻专, that's 讗住讻专讛. How will 讗住讻专讛 come? \"讚讜止讘职专值讬 砖指讈拽侄专\", if you speak a lie. Yeah. \"讬住讻专\", does that mean they'll be closed? Yeah, it's going to be closed, but it's also from the 诇砖讜谉 of 讗住讻专讛. So that makes sense, but why maaser? Eating. When you eat, it comes through this comes through the mouth. So maaser is from eating, you're saying? Maaser, you did you didn't take of maaser and you ate the fruit. Yeah, you ate the fruit before taking of maaser. 讝讗讙讟 讚讬 Gemara, 讗讬讘注讬讗 诇讛讜, there was a question asked,

Rabbi Elazar bar Rabbi Yosi said, \"lashon hara.\" What did he mean? Did he mean lashon hara, only in other words, he's arguing and he's saying, \"You're saying it's because of maaser, and I'm telling you it's not because of maaser. It's because of lashon hara. 讗执讬讚执诇职诪指讗 讗祝 注诇 诇砖讜谉 讛专注 谞诪讬 拽讗诪专.\" Or maybe what he meant was, also lashon hara. He agreed, \"You said maaser, and I'm telling you, right, maaser, but also lashon hara.\" We don't know which one. Ta shema, so the Gemara will answer you. Does that mean intentionally or unintentionally? Oh, intentionally. Yeah, it had to be intentionally. Ta shema, come and hear, I'll ask you a ra'aya. We know, \"讻砖谞讻谞住讜 专讘讜转讬谞讜 诇讻专诐 讘讬讘谞讛,\" once it happened when the chachamim came in to the 讻专诐 讘讬讘谞讛. In Yavneh they had a yeshiva and it was sitting like a 讻专诐. They were set up like a vineyard. That's why they called the vineyard a seating block, Were these three? Take the line. And this question was asked in front of them. Which question? \"诪讻讛 讝讜 诪驻谞讬 诪讛 诪转讞诇转 讘讘谞讬 诪注讬讬诐 讜讙讜诪专转 讘驻讛?\" Why is that this sickness, the 讗住讻专讛, what is the reason for this sickness? Who gets it? It's a kind of sickness that starts in the stomach, but ends up on the mouth, in the throat. So what is the reason for it? That's what they ask. This question that we spoke speaking about.

Rabbi Yehuda's Answer: Lashon Hara Starts in the Stomach

So, Rabbi Yehuda bar Rabbi Elai who was called, he had a title, 专讗砖 讛诪讚讘专讬诐 讘讻诇 诪拽讜诐, he was the one that was the top talker all over. Over Rav Shimon, over the Rashbi? Yeah, yeah, the Gemara tells the story why, you know, Romans. The Gemara here, the famous story of Rashbi comes here because of this beraita. So he was called the 专讗砖 讛诪讚讘专讬诐 讘讻诇 诪拽讜诐, he was the first guy. And he said, 讗祝 注诇 驻讬 砖讻讜诇讬讜转 讬讜注爪讜转, even though your your the kidneys give you the eitza, the 诇讘 诪讘讬谉, and the heart understands, 讜诇砖讜谉 诪讞转讱, and the tongue cuts the words, 驻讛 讙讜诪专, the mouth finishes. When it says kidneys, that means stomach? Huh? No, no, kidneys, the kidneys. Yeah, yeah. How do things start in the kidneys? No, 讬讜注爪讜转, no, I don't know. It's always a famous question, it says in Chassidus, it says in Gemara that the kidneys give you eitza. How does the kidneys give advice? It's not clear. I mean there's different the Rebbe tried to explain it a little bit, it's not so pashut. Anyway, so even though it says the 讻诇讬讜转 give you the eitza, the heart... But the the mouth is the one that finishes. When you speak lashon hara, the bottom line is all starts off with this, the heart with this, but the bottom line is your mouth. So, in other words, his answer was, why do we does a person get this sickness? For lashon hara. And that's what the sickness is: it starts in the stomach, goes to the throat, to the mouth. Same thing with lashon hara, starts there, but it comes to the mouth. This is what Rabbi Yehuda bar Elai said.

Rabbi Elazar Blames Forbidden Foods for the Illness

Rabbi Elazar bar Rabbi Yosi got up and he answered and he said, \"No, 诪驻谞讬 砖讗讜讻诇讬诐 讘讛 讚讘专讬诐 讟诪讗讬诐, because they eat with their mouth treif things.\" Okay, the Gemara, 讚讘专讬诐 讟诪讗讬诐? We're talking about frei people eat treif things? Salka da'atach? 讗诇讗 砖讗讜讻诇讬诐 讘讛 讚讘专讬诐 砖讗讬谞诐 诪转讜拽谞讬诐, no, because they eat things which were not taken off maaser. That's what it means. So we see that Rabbi Yehuda... Rabbi Elazar bar Rabbi Yosi holds because of maaser. Okay. 谞注谞讛 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讜讗诪专, 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 got up and he says, 讘注讜讜谉 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛, because of not learning Torah. 讗诪专 诇讬, he said, \"How could you say that, that the reason is because you don't learn Torah? 谞砖讬诐 讬讜讻讬讞讜, women also get it, and they're not 诪讞讜讬讘 to learn Torah. So you can't say that there's an 注讘讬专讛 of 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛.\" So he answered, \"讛讜讗讬诇 讜诪讘讟诇讜转 讘注诇讬讛谉, okay, these are women who disturb their husbands from learning.\" 注讜讘讚讬 讻讜讻讘讬诐 讬讜讻讬讞讜, the goyim, some goyim get it. They don't have 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛. So he answered, 砖诪讘讟诇讬谉 讗转 讬砖专讗诇, they ruin the, they disturb the Yidden from learning. 转讬谞讜拽讜转 讬讜讻讬讞讜, you have little children, and they don't have to learn Torah. So he answered, 讛讜讗讬诇 讜诪讘讟诇讬谉 讗讘讬讛谉, they disturb their parents. Fine. Then he says, 转讬谞讜拽讜转 砖诇 讘讬转 专讘谉 讬讜讻讬讞讜, you see that children that go to school, and they also, they're learning Torah and they're not disturbing, why do they get it? He says, \"That's for a different reason. 讛转诐 讻讚专讘讬 讙讜专讬讜谉, there like Rabbi Gurion said. 讚讗诪专 专讘讬 讙讜专讬讜谉, 讜讗讬转讬诪讗 专讘讬 讬讜住祝 讘专讘讬 砖诪注讬讛, 讘讝诪谉 砖讛爪讚讬拽讬诐 讘讚讜专, 爪讚讬拽讬诐 谞转驻住讬诐 注诇 讛讚讜专. However, when the 爪讚讬拽 when 爪讚讬拽讬诐 are in the 讚讜专, 爪讚讬拽讬诐 die as a forgiveness, they're grabbed on. The Eibishter takes them away because of the to forgive for the generation. 讗讘诇 讗讬谉 爪讚讬拽讬诐 讘讚讜专, there are no 爪讚讬拽讬诐 there, 转讬谞讜拽讜转 砖诇 讘讬转 专讘谉 谞转驻住讬诐 注诇 讛讚讜专, so then the children. So that's the reason why the children die, but that's we...\" 诇状讜, 诇状讜 爪讚讬拽讬诐... He's not talking about 谞住转专讬诐. What he said is, it's like a fire if you go and get this question, but 讚讘专讬诐 讟诪讗讬诐... Okay, he asked 讚讘专讬诐 讟诪讗讬诐, so he said, can't be... No, that's what a lot of people are not careful... So that's not eating maaser, without maaser. That's not that, people were not careful. We know the 注诪讬 讛讗专抓, that they made the idea of 讚诪讗讬, why you have to take off from 讚诪讗讬, is because they didn't take off maaser. But they did, they were careful with kashrus. They were not careful with 讟讜诪讗讛 讜讟讛专讛, and they were not careful with... Also, but they were... Terumah yeah, but not maaser, right. Why is it considered treif? It's not considered treif. But that's what he said originally. No, first he said the word treif, he said, \"No, I didn't mean treif. I meant forbidden things, but for not for treif.\" So is it implying that school children are like tzadikim? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Where do we see this in a pasuk? What he means here is there's a pasuk, if you don't have people who keep the mitzvot, go look, in other words, if you have no zechut for something that happens, go look towards the 注拽讘讬 讛爪讗谉, for the feet of the sheep, of the kids, the the

youngsters. So what do we see from here? That the youngsters, their zechut is helps the Yidden, and mimela, if there's no tzadikim, the youngsters, the kids are in their place. But the meat... Huh? Because they have no aveirot, so... Right, right, right, they're like tzadikim. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What are we taught on the guarantors? Uh... In the meantime, it's interesting, but we're trying to bring proof from here is, when we What did Rabbi Elazar berabbi Yosi say? Because they don't they don't take off maaser. But before we quoted Rabbi Elazar berabbi Yosi says because of 诇砖讜谉 讛专注. And we have a question, what did he mean, only 诇砖讜谉 讛专注, or also maaser? Now we have an answer because here before he said 诇砖讜谉 讛专注, here he says maaser. That shows that what he meant, he didn't mean only 诇砖讜谉 讛专注, because then this would be a contradiction, because here it says it's because of maaser. That he says both. Yeah. Now comes the story of Rashbi with the cave and the whole thing. And you're all invited back. Yeah.
