Why Chabad Doesn't Say Shalom to the Rebbe
Why Chabad Doesn't Say Shalom to the Rebbe
Part of Halacha, Hashkafa and Parenting · 13:35
A Yerushalmi-based shiur explaining the minhag, rooted in a Yerushalmi passage, that a talmid does not initiate shalom to his rebbi — tracing it through Chabad practice with the Rebbeim and a story about Rabbi Greenwald. The shiur moves into Dovid Hamelech's patient response to the leitzei hador who mocked him about his death, the parable of Rav Bun bar Chiya's twenty-eight years of Torah outweighing a hundred years of ordinary learning, and Rabbi Zeira's unsettling encounter with a butcher in Eretz Yisrael.

רב יוחנן הוה מסתמך על רב יעקב בר אידי. Reb Yochanan would rely on Rav Yaakov bar Idi, which means Rav Yaakov bar Idi supported Reb Yochanan. אבל רב אלעזר חמי ליה, Reb Elazar would watch him, see him, ומטמר מקמיה, and he would hide. And he saw him, and he didn't want to show himself to him and didn't say anything, and he would hide. אמר, so Reb Yochanan says: תרתי מילין עבד דין בבלאה. This guy from Bavel did two wrong things to me. חדא, one thing, one is חדא דלא שאל בשלומי, he didn't say shalom to me. He came here, he didn't say shalom. וחדא דלא אמר שמעתא משמי. Also, another thing that he did that he didn't say something I said, he didn't say it in my name. אמר ליה, so he said to him, so Rav Yaakov bar Idi said to him, don't be upset on the first thing that he didn't say shalom to you. Because כהין אינון נהיגין גביהן, by us, here in Eretz Yisrael, this is our מנהג, זעיריא לא ישאול בשלמא דרבה, that a smaller person does not say shalom to a greater person, which means you should not say shalom to your Rebbi. והינון מקיימין, because they are mekayem the pasuk where it says ראוני נערים ונחבאו, they see me, they hide, out of respect. And this is the difference, I mentioned this once before, the difference between Chabad and other Chasidim. And other Chasidim say shalom to the Rebbi, Chabad doesn't. Chabad goes like Yerushalmi, other ones don't go like Yerushalmi. That's because it goes like Bavli. And somehow in Chabad we pasken, no, the Rema brings this. The Rema in Shulchan Aruch brings this Yerushalmi. The Mechaber says say shalom, and the Rema says יש אומרים, I don't remember the lashon there, is from this Gemara in Yerushalmi that you should not say shalom to your rebbi. No! Stand up. No, that's shalom, I kept, you have to give the greatest respect. We're talking about the רבי באמת, by the rebbeim, they came and no one gave shalom to them. I don't know, this is a rav is a different story, but no, you have to stand up anyway, I'm saying that has nothing to do with this. Here we're talking about a רבי מובהק. I mean, I can't, not having a Yeah, yeah, that's true! That's true. No, this is another, this is going over to say shalom. So there is a machloket whether you're supposed to say, be'emet it was a the whole לשון of toch kedei dibbur, when it says that if you change, you say something wrong, and תוך כדי, within a few seconds, you change, that's what's the shiur of toch kedei dibbur? שלום עליך רבי! Some say רבי ומורי, some say two or three words, whatever it is. So there is such a thing, but here in Yerushalmi it says clearly that our minhag is not to say. No, but when people came the first, like when you came from a different city for Shabbos, for Yom Tov, all other rebbeim would קבל שלום. And except Lubavitch. In Lubavitch, never קבל שלום, there's no such thing as to קבל שלום. It's based on Yerushalmi. No, you don't say, like Nachman Blau you say Shalom Aleichem. But yeah, that was something else, but when you go, when you used to come to the Rebbe, no one no, no one says shalom. Not Lubavitchers, you give the Rebbe the hand, and the Rebbe would give back. Yeah, they knew the there's a few stories. Bistritzky. Yeah, Levi Bistritzky. Yeah, his father, yeah, he tells the story. You also you also you're teaching him also not to, something like that.
But when Rabbi Greenwald came the first after תש\"ט, after יו\"ד שבט, Rabbi Greenwald was close with the Rebbe even before, but after יו\"ד שבט, a few, a month later, I think, he came to came to New York for the first time. The Rebbe didn't give him shalom. So he figured, at least he always the Rebbe gave him Shalom Aleichem because they were close. So the Rebbe said, \"I don't want to put you in a position because I know you're going to refuse, and I don't want to put you in that in a spot.\" Yeah, they bring this story, that's who. Yes! Only because it says זעיריא, a small, smaller person should not give for a greater person, that's what it is. A greater person, sure he should give, others. He was always מקדים שלום. Give a lot of shalom. What's the meaning? Shalom Aleichem, you always give. Sure, he always shook back. Okay. They took a haircut. and he saw that this He went over to the Rebbe, the Remash, and he said to him the haircut to set his beard, יעצט קען מען אריין. Oh, yeah, Lag BaOmer. So, the Rebbe never said He never had an answer. Yeah, that's why I said that, too. Okay. It's just that he's said he's makpid because he's לא אומר דבר בשם אומרו, השמועה. But that's only in halacha. Only in halacha, yeah. I mean, could that be that the shirt was what? Uh, I don't That's what That we don't know exactly. The Rebbe's שטעקן is like that. It happened by parade once, so it doesn't It's shtick. It happens, right. He was upset that he that he said his uh, uh, teaching and he didn't say his name, yeah. And didn't say his name, yeah. Or he didn't say anything at all You could take that way, too, but pshat is that he didn't mention it in my name. Cuz stam he shouldn't say. He didn't have an inyan to say his name. So, that's also something It took how long, but maybe it was just he just came, you know. Okay, it says,
אין דור שאין בו ליצנים. There's no dor that doesn't have ליצנים. אה? כדרך של דוד, like we find in the day of David. Now, ליצנים doesn't mean like we know now a guy joker. It says by by Yitzchak, at least by Avraham, the ליצני הדור, they said that מעובר ממלך, שרה, so to speak. It doesn't mean ליצנים jokers. It means ליצנים, these bad people. That's what it means. Uh? מושב לצים, Rashi, does it? Shoot, they are bad people today, too. Yeah. That's a letz, he's a letz. Yeah, no, but they say a letz somebody who makes a lot of jokes. That's what we call a letz. A letz, uh, who will make the joke, you know, it's called letz. Oh, good, so the same, but sometimes we think of it What did this פריצי הדור See, here he calls the same guys פריצי הדור. A פרוץ is, uh, like a lowlife. What did they do by David? They would come by the windows of David, and they would say, ״דוד, מתי יבנה בית המקדש?״ When will the Beit Hamikdash be built? ״מתי בית ה׳ נלך?״ When will we go to the house of Hashem? What did they mean to chisel him? They knew. Everyone knew that Hashem said to David, \"You are not going to build the Beit Hamikdash. Your son will.\" So, when they came to ask him, \"Nu, when will the Beit Hamikdash be built?\", they meant to say, \"When are you going to die?\" That's what they chiseled him. And he would say, ״אף על פי שמתכוונים להכעיסני״, even though their kavanah is to get me angry, ״יבוא עלי״, should come on me, I don't mind if this happens, ״שאני שמח בלבי״, I'm happy in my heart, ״שמחתי באומרים לי בית ה׳ נלך״. And I see Yidden want the Beit Hamikdash, I'm happy even though their kavanah is that I should die. Isn't this just Yeah, yeah, like a true מנהיג of Lubavitch. I don't care, as long as they want Mashiach, that's all. Yeah.
כד דמך רב בון בר חייה, when Rav Bun bar Chiya passed away, על לגביה רב זירא, so Rav Zeira came there, ואיפטר עליה, and he used on him the pasuk where it says, see, the word דמך really means sleeping. So, the mefarshim all say by tzadikim sometimes we don't want to use the word he died, so we say he went to sleep. But he used the word So, Rav Zeira said on him there's a pasuk it says in the ״מתוקה שנת העובד אם מעט ואם הרבה יאכל״, that the the sleep for an עובד is very sweet whether it's a little bit or a lot that he eats. Okay, so, he lichorah should have said it's sweet for the one that sleeps a lot or a little as long as he sleeps. Peshat is that means if you work, you should rest a little bit or a lot. It doesn't say if you sleep. It says if a little bit or a lot you should eat. What does that mean? So, למה היה רב בון בר חייה דומה, he says, what does Rav Bun bar Chiya like? למלך ששכר פועלים הרבה, a melech that hired a lot of workers. וירש פועל אחד ונתקשר במלאכתו יותר מדאי, and there was one worker and he did his job much better. What did he do? What takes normally a day to do, he did in two hours. מה עשה המלך? What did the king do? נטלו והיה מטייל עמו ארוכות וקצרות. So, when he finished his work, the king took a walk with him. ולעתותי ערב, at the evening, באו אותם פועלים ליטול שכרם, but at night, all the workers came to get their salary. ונתן לו שכרו מושלם, and he paid this guy who only worked for two hours the same amount as he gave them for working all day. והפועלים התרעמו, so they were upset, ואמרו, and they said, ״אנו יגענו כל היום״, we worked all day, ״וזה לא יגע אלא שתי שעות ביום״, he only worked two days uh two hours in the day, ״ונתת לו שכרו מושלם״, and you gave him the complete salary like them? אמר להם המלך, so the king said, ״יגע זה בשתי שעות יותר ממה שאתם יגעתם״, you got late, ״שיגעתם אתם כל היום כולו״. He worked in these two hours, and he accomplished In other words, he did it with more zerizut and with more koach. He accomplished more than you did the whole day. So, כך יגע רב בון בתורה לעשרים ושמונה שנה. Rav Bun learned Torah, worked in Torah for 28 years. That's all all all he lived. But in that sort of short amount, מה שאין תלמיד וותיק יכול ללמוד במאה שנה. What the normal talmid cannot learn in a 100 years. That's how he טייטשט מתוקה שנת העובד. It, whether it's מעט אם הרבה. יאכל, means you get your, that's the mashal, you get your sechar. Because יאכל means to eat. To eat means to get the reward. So, whether it's a little bit or a lot, if he's an oved, if he does, as long as that little bit is done with the gantze zerizus, and with the whole koach, so then, he gets to eat the same sechar. This this Rabbi Bun was a was an אמורא? Yeah. 28 years only? He was called Rav, or? All the names in Yerushalmi you turn. In the same person, in Bavli could be called Rav Avin. I think it's called Avin bar Chaya. or Avon. Here he is called Bon. Yeah. All right, this הלוכה וכולי וכולי. It's going to be it says אלף is correct? Good, in Yerushalmi, it's called הלכות. Yeah, so that's that's the nu, this is not הלכות over here. This is the סדר of the עניינים. Okay, the אלף is not does No, the אלף is not No, the אלף is this. Okay,
רבי זירא כד סליק להכא, רבי זירא, when he came to ארץ ישראל, אקיז דם, he took, he draw drew blood. You have to be מקיז דם for, what was it, אזל בעי מיזבון חדא ליטרא דקופרא מתבחי. Something to say it, רבי זירא. So, he wanted to buy a pound, a ליטרא of meat, because it says, when you draw blood, you get weak, you should eat meat. אמר לי, so he went to the butcher. אמר ליה, כמה הדין ליטרא? How much does this cost? אמר ליה, בחמישין מוני, 50 rubles or whatever it is, וחד קורסם, and and a קלאפ. and a קלאפ, it's One bang. אמר ליה, סב לך שיתין, you know what, I'll give you 60, ולא יכוף. I'll give you 60, and just don't hit me. Like all, didn't want. סב לך שבעין, I'll give you 70. So, I give you one. סב לך תמנין, I'll give you 80. Could be 150. סב לך תשעין, I'll give you 90. At long, don't hit me. עד מטא למאה, until it came to 100. He said, \"No, I'm only selling it to you for whatever price, if it's the price plus a קלאפ.\" אמר ליה, עביד כוותך, what what should I do? Do it. He He needed the meat, so he did it. ברמשא נחית לבית וועדא, at night, he came to the בית הוועד, to the shul, to the ישיבה, אמר לון רבנן, he said to רבנן, \"מה ביש מנהגא דהכא?\" What kind of crazy מנהג you have here, דלא אכיל בר נש ליטרא דקופר עד דמחו ליה חד קורסם, you can't get meat unless you get a קלאפ. אמרו ליה, they said, they said, \"What are you talking about? Where did you see such a thing?\" אמר ליה, פלן טבחא, yeah, this butcher does it. שדרון בעיין מייתיה, they sent, bring him here, and want to give him a punishment. ואשכחון ארונא נפיק, and when they came to find him, they already found him in the casket, he already died. אמרו ליה, so they said to him, רבי, כל הדין? So they said to Rabbi Zeira, \"You were so upset at him that you pashut, your kpeidah killed him?\" אמר לון, he said, ייסא עלי, Now he כעס עלי Like he cursed himself, if I, it should come to me a klalah if I was angry at him. I want to prove to you I was not angry. The best ראיה, סברי דמנהגא כן. I thought this was the minhag here. I asked you the minhag, that's I wasn't angry at him, I was just wondering about the minhag. So it's not him. So the she'eilah is, why did he davka die? So, can I always say this about what the Mitteler Rebbe Mitteler Rebbe once something happened, someone didn't listen to this and his child died. So, they came to him and said, your kpeidah shot right, right, right but he says, I I I, but what should I do that from Himmel, it was accepted for me, what should I do from Himmel they they they taken for me, took on that they Opposed me? No, they took on his side. They took, they cared for my kavod,
