Missing the Ascent and Its Spiritual Impact

Aye, they didn't go up. How many people went up? 45,000 people went up with Ezra. There were hundreds of thousands of Yidden there. Had you all gone up, you would have had strong, which means the Shechinah would have been stronger. Now that you didn't go up, so it's like an 讗专讝. What's an 讗专讝? It's 讘转 拽讜诇. All you have a 讘转 拽讜诇. 讻讚转谞讬讗, like it says: 诪砖诪转讜 谞讘讬讗讬诐 讗讞专讜谞讬诐, when the last 谞讘讬讗讬诐 died, who were they? They still use a 讘转 拽讜诇. So all you had left was a 讘转 拽讜诇. And that's what he said, you guys, the Eibershter doesn't like you. But look what you guys did. Okay, and then the Gemara asks a 砖讗诇讛, 讜专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 诇拽讬砖 诪讬 诪砖转注讬 讘讛讚讬 专讘讛 讘专 讘专 讞谞讛? Would he, did he speak to Rabba bar bar Chana? He probably wouldn't even have spoken to him, because 讛砖转讗 诪专讛 讚讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 讛讜讛, 专讘讬 讗诇注讝专 was the head of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, 讜诇讗 讛讜讛 诪砖转注讬 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 诇拽讬砖 讘讛讚讬讛, Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish wouldn't talk to him, because if Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish talked to somebody, 讻诇 诪讗谉 讚讛讜讛 诪砖转注讬 讘讛讚讬讛 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 诇拽讬砖 讘砖讜拽讗, if anybody spoke to Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish in the street, the fact that Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish spoke to him, 讬讛讘讬 诇讬讛 注讬住拽讗 讘诇讗 住讛讚讬. They would trust that guy so much, they would give him, do business with him without edim, because if Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish just spoke to him, that means this guy is a very special guy. So he didn't even speak to Rabbi Elazar. 讘讛讚讬 专讘讛 讘专 讘专 讞谞讛 诪砖转注讬? He spoke to Rabba bar bar Chana, who was in a lower madregah than Rabbi Elazar? 讗诪专 Rav Pappa, Rav Pappa says you're right. 砖讚讬 讙讘专讗, put a different person, you have to change the names. 讗讬 专讬砖 诇拽讬砖, if this story action happened to Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish, so Zeiri, then the other person was not Rabba bar bar Chana. You have to change, because with Rabba bar bar Chana he wouldn't talk, but Zeiri. 讗讬 专讘讛 讘专 讘专 讞谞讛, if the story taka happened to Rabba bar bar Chana, he's a different amora. He was a chashuv'er amora. There's a different person. His name, yeah. And we get that if you want, if it's for sure that it was Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish, then the story happened not with Rabba bar bar Chana, it happened Zeiri. 讗讬 专讘讛 讘专 讘专 讞谞讛, but if the story happened zicher was Rabbah bar bar Chanah, then it's not Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish, then it's Rabbi Elazar. Because ben Lakish wouldn't speak to wouldn't speak to Rabbah bar bar Chanah. Wouldn't speak to Rabbi Elazar, and Rabbah bar bar Chanah was even less than Rabbi Elazar. Because he was so great, no, he was afraid, because whenever he spoke to somebody, that meant that he gave that guy a confirmation. He didn't want to give stam, give people confirmation. So he wouldn't even give these great people a confirmation, because some people I guess he could, some people... Right away, immediately, yeah. Al derech,

Yaakov Kamenetsky鈥檚 Advice About Guest Shiurim

when Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky was in yeshiva, so I asked him to give a shiur. So he tells me, he's not going to give a shiur, and \"I want to give you an advice,\" he says, \"Don't let any rosh yeshiva come and give a shiur in yeshiva. Nobody. Nobody.\" Why? \"Because it's not comfortable sometimes. You guys, you do want him to give, you don't want him to give. So I'm telling you as a policy, listen to me,\" he says, \"don't tell any, ask anyone.\" And he tells, \"I want to tell you a story. I was in Toronto once,\" he says, \"and I told the rosh yeshiva there, same thing, I told the rosh yeshiva there not to let anybody.\" He says, \"A year later when I came back, I heard that during the year, Reb Moshe Feinstein was there and gave a shiur.\" So I told him, \"You didn't take my advice. I told you not to.\" So I said to him, so he wanted to tell me, I said to him, \"We're talking about Reb Moshe, it's not stam.\" \"No, no difference. Nobody. The policy should be nobody, no guests should say, because you can't make differences.\" I'm saying the same thing here. Reish Lakish didn't want to talk to anybody, should, because why? In the street, obviously, in public, because he doesn't want to give a confirmation to anybody. So even the great people like Rabbi Elazar, he was the rav of Eretz Yisrael. Reminds me of that story. Because who says we accept his advice? Who says we accept his advice? I didn't accept his advice. Yeah. You can't speak in another shul... Yeah, so what's wrong? Oh yeah, I didn't take his advice, either. I didn't take his advice. You know how many people we had giving shiurim in yeshiva beyond? No, no, here, not here, it's completely different, but a shiur, talking about a shiur. A shiur here, we had Merkaz HaRav gave a shiur, we had... we had all... So it's right. I don't think I didn't take his advice, but his shita was... and what I'm saying here, not to talk to Rabbi Elazar. He told me because then sometimes you're in a position that some people you don't and it's not nice to make chilukim, so you embarrass somebody, and either, you're either... I didn't take his advice. Here's why. He went to Tzfat and once...

Satmar Rebbe鈥檚 Refusal and the Mysterious Gabbai Call

When the Satmar Rebbe came here, not him, the... Reb Moshe... So I went to ask him to come give a shiur in yeshiva, and I told him that I heard that I know that your uncle gave a shiur in Telshe. So the same thing I asked. Says, \"No, not only in Telshe he gave a shiur, in Torah Vodaath also!\" So I asked him, can, would you come? He didn't want? I knew he wouldn't, I didn't have a... First of all, the Rebbe's Lubavitch. So... Satmar was against Lubavitch. Like, no, he wouldn't come. I knew he wouldn't, but he tells me, \"I have to think about it.\" Two days later I get a call from his gabbai. Says, \"This is the gabbai from from from the Satmarer Rebbe. Concerning what you asked him, the answer is he can't come.\" Why can't he? Yeah. So the, I think, so I asked, macht er, macht... He thinks I didn't understand why, I knew he wouldn't come. But I mach a tam, vos? I said, \"Did he tell you why he can't come?\" Says, \"Ya, ober er hot mir gezogt, ober ich ken dir nisht zog'n.\" Yeah, he said, but I can't tell you why.
