Month of Av
Why the month's name speaks only of comforting Hashem, and never mentions comforting the Yidden themselves.
Part of Days on the Jewish Calendar: Av · 17:00
Explores why this month is called Menachem Av rather than simply Av, and why, even though the names of the months are said to have come from Bavel, Chazal still derive meaning from them in lashon kodesh. Unpacks the Gemara's teaching that Hashem Himself suffers over having exiled His children, explains why the name speaks only of comforting the Father, and closes with the Maggid of Mezritch's teaching that even prayer for one's own material needs is, at its root, a plea on behalf of the Shechinah.

As we stand at the end of the month of Av, it is kedai to look into the meaning of the name of the month, because as we know, 讛讻诇 讛讜诇讱 讗讞专 讛讞讬转讜诐, everything follows the end, as the halacha is by a shtar, by a document, that the last line expresses what the whole document is about, so at the end of the month too, it is kedai to look into and understand what is the meaning of the name of the month. The 诪谞讛讙 讬砖专讗诇 is that we call this month Menachem Av, not only Av, but Menachem Av. Therefore, 砖讘转 诪讘专讻讬诐, the Shabbos before the 讞讜讚砖 讗讘, when we bless the month, we say that we are blessing the month of Menachem Av. And this is also 谞讜讙注 诇讛诇讻讛. Not only that this is the minhag, but it's 谞讜讙注 诇讛诇讻讛 concerning the way we write the name of the month in documents. As the Get Pashut writes in Even HaEzer 住讬诪谉 拽讻状讜 住注讬祝 拽讟谉 诇状讛, brought down in the Pischei Teshuvah in 住讬诪谉 拽讻状讜 住注讬祝 拽讟谉 讬状讘, that also when you write in a shtar the name of the month Menachem Av, it's also kasher. And not only that, even if you just write the word Menachem instead of the word Av, it's also kasher. And as he says, because 讛讚讘专 诪驻讜专住诐 讜讬讚讜注, because it's known 讚讞讜讚砖 讗讘 拽专讜 诇讬讛 讞讜讚砖 诪谞讞诐, that the month of Av is called the month of Menachem. And in the Aruch HaShulchan in there in 住讬诪谉 拽讻状讜 住注讬祝 讟状讝 he writes that by us the minhag is not just to write the word Menachem, but nevertheless he also says that if a person wrote Menachem Av, it is 讻砖专 讘讚讬注讘讚, because that's how we say by 讘专讻转 讛讞讜讚砖 in all our countries, and that's how they write in letters. And the Get Pashut says even more, that 讬砖 谞讜讛讙讬谉, some have the minhag, that in 讻转讜讘讜转 and 砖讟专讜转 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 they write Menachem instead of Av. But at any event, we see that the name of the month is Menachem Av. So to explain what is the meaning of Menachem Av, so first we have to understand that even though the Chazal say in 讬专讜砖诇诪讬 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 驻专拽 讗壮 讛诇讻讛 讘壮, in 讘专讗砖讬转 专讘讛 驻专砖讛 诪状讞 讟壮, and Tosafot in 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛 讚祝 讝壮 注诪讜讚 讗壮 brings it down, that 砖诪讜转 讛讞讚砖讬诐 注诇讜 讘讬讚诐 诪讘讘诇, that the names of the months came from Bavel, which means, as the 诪驻专砖讬诐 explain, as it's the Ibn Ezra and Chizkuni in 驻专砖转 讘讗 say, and that's how it's 诪砖诪注 from the Ramban also, that all the names of the months are not from 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖, but a 诇砖讜谉 讻砖讚讬讬诐, as Ibn Ezra and the Chizkuni say, or 诇砖讜谉 驻专住讬讬诐 as it says in the Ramban, that means that they are not 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖.
So lichorah it would come out that there is nothing that we could darshen, that we can learn out from the names of the months because they're not in 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖 to begin with. But the truth is that we find in many, many 讚专砖讜转 讞讝状诇 that they do explain the meaning of the name of the month. For instance, in Pesikta Zutarta in 驻专砖转 讘讗 it says that it's called Nisan, because 讘讜 谞注砖讜 谞讬住讬诐 诇讬砖专讗诇, because in that month nisim, miracles were done to the Bnei Yisrael. And there is a Midrash Shemot Kol Hachadashim that drashens all the names of the months. So obviously we are able to darshen the name of the month. 讗讬 we say that the names of the months 注诇讜 注诪讛诐 诪讘讘诇, came up from Bavel, they're not names 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖, so the pshat is that to call the specific months with these specific names, that came from Bavel. But the words themselves could be have meaning in 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖. And certainly when it comes to the name Av, certainly we can't say that it has no meaning in 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖, because the word Av definitely does have a meaning in 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖. And another thing, since these are names that are used according to the Torah, the Torah uses it, many of them are even mentioned in 转讜专讛 砖讘讻转讘, and many of them are mentioned in 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, so since they are mentioned in the Torah, so we understand that they must have a meaning the way the word is in lashon kodesh. Certainly as we said before concerning the name Av and Menachem Av, that this is a word in lashon kodesh. And the truth is even more than that. Even if we're going to say that these are names that came from the other languages, from 讻砖讚讬讬诐 or 驻专住讬讬诐 as we said before, still we find what the Shelah says, that 讻砖讗转讛 专讜讗讛 讘讚讘专讬 专讝状诇 砖诪驻专砖讬诐 转讬讘讛, that when you see the 讞讝状诇 explain a word, 讜讗讜诪专讬诐 砖讻谉 讛讜讗 诇砖讜谉 讬讜讜谞讬, and they say this is from 诇砖讜谉 讬讜讜谞讬, 讗讜 诇砖讜谞讜转 讗讞专讬诐 砖诇 讙讜讬诐, or that from other languages of the 讙讜讬诐, so the Shelah says: 讗诇 讬注诇讛 讘讚注转讱, do not think 砖讛转讜专讛 讻转讘讛 讗诇讛 讛诇砖讜谞讜转 砖讗讬谞诐 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖, that the 转讜专讛 wrote these languages which are not 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖, 讗诇讗 讛讻讬 驻讬专讜砖讜, this is the pshat: 讻砖讘专讗 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗 注讜诇诪讜, 诇讗 讛讬讛 专拽 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖, when Hashem created the world there was only 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖. 讜讻砖讘诇诇 讛拽讚讜砖 讘专讜讱 讛讜讗 讛诇砖讜谞讜转 讘讚讜专 讛驻诇讙讛, when Hashem mixed up the languages at the time of 讚讜专 讛驻诇讙讛, at the time of the tower, 讘讗 诇砖讜谉 诇砖讜谉 讛拽讜讚砖 讙诐 讻谉 讘砖讗专 讛诇砖讜谞讜转. So lashon hakodesh got mixed into other languages. And they got mixed into the other languages. So originally they are lashon hakodesh. So the same thing we could apply here, too, that even if we're going to say that the names of the months are from other languages, the words are from other languages, but since they are used 注诇 驻讬 转讜专讛, probably they were originally lashon hakodesh, and they got mixed into other languages, and later on, when the Yidden started using them for the months, it came back to lashon hakodesh. But in any event, it comes out that we are able to darshan the names of the months even if we're going to say that they are from other languages. So we're able to darshan them according to the meaning of the words in lashon hakodesh.
Concerning our inyan that we're discussing here is the name of the month Menachem Av. So the word Av means the father. Menachem Av means we comfort the father. Who is the father that we're talking about here? 讗讘讬谞讜 砖讘砖诪讬诐, that's our Father in heaven, that's Hashem. So when we say Menachem Av, it means that we comfort the father. So what we're saying is that we are comforting Hashem. If the name would be 讗讘 诪谞讞诐, then the pshat would be that the Av, the Father, 讗讘讬谞讜 砖讘砖诪讬诐, is 诪谞讞诐, he comforts. Whom does he comfort? He comforts the Yidden. But since the name the way it was established is Menachem Av, so the meaning of the word is that we are 诪谞讞诐 the 讗讘. We comfort the father, which means the Father, Hashem, is the one that's being comforted. Similar to the 诇砖讜谉 what we say in the bracha of 谞讞诐 that we say on Tisha B'Av, so we say 诪谞讞诐 爪讬讜谉. What does that mean? Not that Zion is the one that is 诪谞讞诐, 爪讬讜谉 is the one that comforts, but 诪谞讞诐 爪讬讜谉 means you are 诪谞讞诐 the Zion, that Zion is comforted. The same here: since it doesn't say 讗讘 诪谞讞诐 but Menachem Av, so what it means is that we are comforting the 讗讘. The 讗讘, the Father, which is Hashem, is being comforted. Now what is the pshat that Hashem is being comforted? Very simple, because the Gemara says in Berachot 讚祝 讙 注诪讜讚 讗 that Hashem says: 诪讛 诇讜 诇讗讘 砖讛讙诇讛 讗转 讘谞讬讜, how bad is it to a father that chased away his children. Then it says: 讜讗讜讬 诇讛诐 诇讘谞讬诐 砖讙诇讜 诪注诇 砖讜诇讞谉 讗讘讬讛诐. And bad is to the children who were chased away from the table of the father. But the first part is that 诪讛 诇讜 诇讗讘 砖讛讙诇讛 讗转 讘谞讬讜, how bad is it to the father that chased away his children. So it comes out that Hashem Himself suffers. Hashem Himself feels bad that He had to chase us into galut. So therefore He has to be comforted, too. And this is the meaning of the word Menachem Av, that the 讗讘, 讗讘讬谞讜 砖讘砖诪讬诐, the Father, is being comforted.
But 诇讻讗讜专讛 we have to understand: in the name Menachem Av, as we explained, all that it stresses is the nechama that Hashem gets. And the nechama that Yidden are supposed to get, who are the children, it's not mentioned at all. And still, this is the name of the month the way it's called by all the Yidden. It means that all the Yidden only mention the concept that Hashem is being comforted and nothing about the Yidden being comforted. So 诇讻讗讜专讛 we have to understand: if we would be talking only about 爪讚讬拽讬诐 讙讚讜诇讬诐, great tzadikim, that their avodah is only, as we would call it, as it says in sefarim, 诇爪讜专讱 讙讘讜讛, only for the sake of Hashem, and they don't care about themselves at all, then we could understand that the whole 注谞讬谉 of galus the way they see it is only the fact that Hashem is in galus, the galus hashchinah. The fact that they themselves are in galus, that doesn't bother them at all, because they don't care about themselves at all. They only care about Hashem and about the Shechinah. So therefore, by them we could understand that what is the whole idea of the nechamah of 讗讘? The nechamah is that Hashem should be comforted, that there should be no more galus hashchinah. Even by those Yidden who are not in that madregah that only care about Hashem and don't care about themselves at all, but still, if they are in a madregah that they care a lot about Hashem, which means that they care about Hashem more than they care about themselves, so we could also understand that by them the whole idea of the nechamah is that Hashem should be 谞转谞讞诐, which really means that all they care about is the 专讜讞谞讬讜转'讚讬拽注 part of the galus rather than the 讙砖诪讬讜转'讚讬拽注 part of galus. We know that when the Yidden are in galus, there are two parts: there's the 讙砖诪讬讜转'讚讬拽注 part in galus, that the Yidden are 讘诪爪讜专 讜讘砖讘讬讛, the Yidden have tzaros and problems, they're not in their own homeland, and because of the galus, there is problems of getting parnasah, and there are all kinds of tzaros and 讙讝讬专讜转 and 砖诪讚讜转 that come through the galus. That's the 讙砖诪讬讜转'讚讬拽注 part of the galus. Then you have the 专讜讞谞讬讜转'讚讬拽注 part of the galus, that when the Yidden were in Eretz Yisrael and we had the Beis Hamikdash, Elokus was 讘讙讬诇讜讬, Godliness was 讘讙讬诇讜讬, and the Yidden felt closer to Hashem, and the Yidden were able to feel batel to Hashem, given over to Hashem, as we say in the 谞讜住讞 讛转驻诇讛, in the Mussaf of Yom Tov, that 诪驻谞讬 讞讟讗讬谞讜 讙诇讬谞讜 诪讗专爪谞讜, that because of our sins we were chased out of our land, and then we say because of that, 讗讬谉 讗谞讜 讬讻讜诇讬诐 诇注诇讜转 讜诇专讗讜转 讜诇讛砖转讞讜讜转 诇驻谞讬讱, and now we cannot go up, and we cannot be seen and see, and we cannot bow down to You, because we have no Beis Hamikdash. And the question that's asked is milah when we say we cannot go up now, we cannot see, is because we have no Beis Hamikdash, so we can't go. But when we say we cannot bow down, why can't we bow down? We could bow down wherever we are, we could bow down to Hashem. And the answer is, bowing down doesn't just mean a physical act. Bowing down expresses a level of bitul that a Yid has to Hashem. When a person bows down, what does he do? He bends his head down very low in front of the person or the thing that he bows down. What does that show? That shows that he is mevatel, he gives up his head, which is his seichel, to the one that he is bowing down to. So, this is only an expression of bitul. So, a person could physically bow down nowadays, too, but the level of bitul to Elokus that a Yid had then, that a person cannot have now. And that's why we say now we cannot go up 讜诇讛砖转讞讜讜转. And that is the 专讜讞谞讬讜转'讚讬拽注 part of galus. So, if a person cares more about ruchniyus than about the gashmiyus, then by him we were able to say that what is the main part of the galus? The fact that Elokus, Godliness is in galus, that the ruchniyus is in galus. And therefore, by him, what is the main nechamah that a Yid is supposed to get for the galus? The nechamah is that the ruchniyus should not be in galus anymore, which means that the Shechinah should not be in galus anymore. And therefore we say Menachem Av, that you have to be Menachem the Av, the Av, the Father, Hashem, which is the Godliness has to get the nechama, has to be comforted. But this is only for those people who care mainly about ruchniyut. But there are a lot of people who care about gashmiyut, too, and care about gashmiyut a lot. So lekhora by them, why is there nothing that mentions the nechama that we will get, why only mention the nechama that Hashem gets?
But be'emet, we have a similar question concerning another inyan. Concerning the inyan of tefillah, of davenen, the Maggid of Mezeritch in his Sefer Or Torah in the beginning of Parashat Vayigash says, that when the 讞讝状诇 say in the beginning of the fifth perek of Berakhot, that 讗讬谉 注讜诪讚讬谉 诇讛转驻诇诇 讗诇讗 诪转讜讱 讻讜讘讚 专讗砖, a person should not start davenen only if he has 讻讜讘讚 专讗砖, which means, as Rashi says, 讛讻谞注讛 讜砖驻诇讜转, he has the bitul to Hashem. So the Maggid of Mezeritch says that there's another pshat in 讗讬谉 注讜诪讚讬谉 诇讛转驻诇诇 讗诇讗 诪转讜讱 讻讜讘讚 专讗砖. That when a person goes to daven, he should not daven because of his own things that are missing, because of his own need, but he should daven because of the 讞住专讜谉 in the 专讬砖讗 讚讻诇 专讬砖讬谉, because of what the head of all heads, which is Hashem, is missing. And that is the meaning 讗讬谉 注讜诪讚讬谉 诇讛转驻诇诇 讗诇讗 诪转讜讱 讻讜讘讚 专讗砖, shouldn't start davenen but for the 讻讜讘讚 of the 专讗砖, for the heaviness of the head, which is Hashem, because Hashem is missing. And he says there, that 讗祝 砖诪讘拽砖 讘拽砖转 爪专讻讬 注爪诪讜, even when you're asking for your own needs, 讬讛讗 讻讜讜谞转讜 砖诇讗 讬讞住专 讛讚讘专 诇诪注诇讛 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, his 讻讜讜谞讛 should be that there should be nothing missing above. And he says 讻讬 讛谞砖诪讛 讛讬讗 讞诇拽 讗诇讜拽讬 诪诪注诇, because the neshamah is part of 讛砖诐, 讜讛讬讗 讗讘专 诪讗讘专讬 讛砖讻讬谞讛, it's a limb of the limbs of the 砖讻讬谞讛, 讜讝讛讜 注讬拽专 讛讘拽砖讛, that is the main 讘拽砖讛 that you should ask for, 砖讬诪诇讗 讜讬讜砖驻注 诇注讬诇讗, that it should be fulfilled and 诪讜砖驻注 诇诪注诇讛, which means that the main thing you have to care about is Hashem. So 诇讻讗讜专讛 here, the question is even stronger. We know that in halacha, the main chiyuv of davenen is 诪讚讗讜专讬讬转讗, that when a person has something that he needs, that he feels he needs, he has to daven to Hashem to ask for it. As the Rambam says, in 讛诇讻讜转 转驻讬诇讛 驻专拽 讗壮 讛诇讻讛 讘壮, that the chiyuv of the 诪爪讜讛 讻讱 讛讜讗, this is the chiyuv of the 诪爪讜转 转驻讬诇讛: 砖砖讜讗诇 爪专讻讬讜 砖讛讜讗 爪专讬讱 诇讛诐 讘讘拽砖讛 讜讘转讞讬谞讛, that you have to ask, with a 讘拽砖讛, with a begging, of Hashem the things that you need. So therefore, if a person doesn't care about his own needs, he only cares about Hashem, so to him what are his needs? The fact that it's missing in the 砖讻讬谞讛, that there is 讙诇讜转 讛砖讻讬谞讛, that's why he davens for 讙诇讜转 讛砖讻讬谞讛. But most people who care about their own needs, so by most people the chiyuv of davenen is that they should daven for their own needs. So how could the Mezeritcher Maggid say that the 讚讬谉 is for everybody, that 讗讬谉 注讜诪讚讬谉 诇讛转驻诇诇 讗诇讗 诪转讜讱 讻讜讘讚 专讗砖 means that you only have to daven about the 讞住专讜谉 in the 砖讻讬谞讛, the 讙诇讜转 讛砖讻讬谞讛, and not care about yourself? But 注诇 驻讬 讛诇讻讛, the chiyuv of 转驻讬诇讛 is that you have to daven for your own 爪专讻讬诐. So therefore, we must say that 讘讗诪转 these two things are not a contradiction, because it's possible that when a person davens for his own needs, this itself should be for the fulfillment of the 讞住专讜谉 in the 砖讻讬谞讛. Because why does really a person need all his physical things? Why does he need his health, let's say, why does he need money? It's all so he should be able to serve Hashem, because 讗谞讬 谞讘专讗转讬 诇砖诪砖 讗转 拽讜谞讬. A Yid is supposed to say, I was created to serve my Master, that's the whole reason he was created. So the whole reason why he needs health, and why he needs money, and he needs all the 讙砖诪讬讜转'讚讬拽注 things, is only in order to be able to serve Hashem. And if he's missing it, and he's not able to serve Hashem, so not that he is missing, so then 讻讘讬讻讜诇 Hashem is missing. So therefore, even when a person to feel his own needs, and he davens for them, what he really should think about, that he's davening for them because if that won't be, he won't be able to serve Hashem, and therefore Hashem will be missing. Ay, you might ask, not everyone feels that way. There are some people who care about their own needs because they feel they need it, not because they feel that this will help them in Avodas Hashem. But b'emes, even if a person doesn't feel that way, that is the truth. Essentially, that is the truth. And therefore 讘驻谞讬诪讬讜转, this is what's hidden in every person's tefillah. So therefore, even when a person davens, and in his mind he thinks that he's davening for his health because he wants to be healthy, he's davening for parnasah because he wants parnasah, but essentially, what's hidden in it is the truth. The truth is that why does he need parnasah, why does he need health and everything else, is so he should be able to serve Hashem. As the pshat in the 诪讗诪专 讞讝状诇 that a person should always do 转讜专讛 讜诪爪讜讜转 砖诇讗 诇砖诪讛, 诪转讜讱 砖诇讗 诇砖诪讛 讘讗 诇砖诪讛, because through doing 砖诇讗 诇砖诪讛 he will come to 诇砖诪讛. So the pshat is 诪转讜讱 砖诇讗 诇砖诪讛, the 转讜讱, the inner part, the hidden part of the 砖诇讗 诇砖诪讛 is the 诇砖诪讛. Even if he doesn't know about it, but because every single 讬讬讚 讘驻谞讬诪讬讜转 讘讗诪转 essentially wants to do what's right, so every single Yid, when he asks for his own needs, essentially he is asking for the needs of the 砖讻讬谞讛. He's asking for his own needs so he should be able to serve Hashem, so it will fulfill the 专爪讜谉 of Hashem, so the 砖讻讬谞讛 will not be missing anything. So this is what the Maggid of Mezeritch meant that a person davens for the 讞住专讜谉 of the 砖讻讬谞讛. And the same applies concerning the 注谞讬谉 of Menachem Av, that even those people who feel the trouble of the 讙诇讜转 not because of the 专讜讞谞讬讜转讚讬拽注 part, but because of the 讙砖诪讬讜转讚讬拽注 part, and they want the comfort because of the gashmiyus, which means they want the geulah so they won't have the 讙诇讜转 讘讙砖诪讬讜转, but essentially what's hidden in what they want is really that there should come the geulah so there will be no 讙诇讜转 讛砖讻讬谞讛, there will be no 讙诇讜转 讘专讜讞谞讬讜转. And that's why the name of the month is Menachem Av, because the main nekudah by everybody is that the 讗讘, the Father, which is Hashem, should be comforted, there should be no more 讙诇讜转 讛砖讻讬谞讛.
