Sukkos
Why the sukkah commemorates only the ananei hakavod giving shade in the desert, and not those same clouds killing snakes or clearing the road.
Part of Sukkot
Raises the Bach's question of why a zecher was established only for the clouds of glory and not for the mann or the well, both also miracles of the desert. Answers that necessities Hashem was, kaviyachol, obligated to provide don't reveal special love the way an unrequired comfort does, and that the clouds' road-clearing falls into that same category, so it's the shade alone that became the mitzvah's lasting reminder of how much Hashem loves the Yidden.

A vort of the Rebbe concerning the Yom Tov of Sukkos. It says in the 驻住讜拽 讘住讜讻讜转 转砖讘讜 砖讘注转 讬诪讬诐, you should sit in the sukkah for seven days, 诇诪注谉 讬讚注讜 讚讜专讜转讬讻诐, that your generations, the later generations should know 讻讬 讘住讜讻讜转 讛讜砖讘转讬 讗转 讘谞讬 讬砖专讗诇 讘讛讜爪讬讗讬 讗讜转诐 诪讗专抓 诪爪专讬诐, that when I took the Yidden out of Mitzrayim, they sat in Sukkos. And what does that mean? So the Alter Rebbe says in Shulchan Aruch, and all the, regular Shulchan Aruch says that this refers to 注谞谞讬 讛讻讘讜讚, that when the Yidden were in the desert, there were the clouds 砖讛拽讬驻讜诐 讘讛诐 诇爪诇, that the clouds surrounded the Yidden to be the shade 诇讘诇 讬讻讛 讘讛诐 砖专讘 讜砖诪砖, so they shouldn't be hot and shouldn't the the rain shouldn't come in. And therefore, Hashem commanded us to make Sukkos, which is also made for shade, so we should remember the miracles that Hashem did. So the Rebbe asks a she'eilah: why did the Torah establish only a zecher that we should remember the 注谞谞讬 讛讻讘讜讚, the clouds that gave us shade? The clouds had another purpose. We know that the clouds also would kill all the snakes on the way, would straighten out the road that we should be able to walk. Why is it not that there should be a zecher for that too? Why is the zecher only for the fact that the clouds gave us shade? Why not for the other things that the clouds did? So the Rebbe explains it based on the kushya that the Bach on the Tur asks. He says, why bichlal was the zecher only made for the clouds? There were many miracles that happened in the desert: the mann that Hashem gave us, you can imagine, more than that, He gave us food every day, He gave the be'er, the well of the water. So why is there no zecher set up for that, only for the 注谞谞讬 讛讻讘讜讚, for the clouds?
So the Mabit answers that the water and the mann, the Yidden had to have it, it was a must, they couldn't live without it, they couldn't survive. So k'vayachol, so to speak, Hashem was obligated to give it all to the Yidden. So that doesn't show the special love Hashem has to the Yidden, because that's something that He's, He took us out of Mitzrayim, He took us to the desert, so He must give us. But 注谞谞讬 讛讻讘讜讚 is not something that they needed to survive, because 注谞谞讬 讛讻讘讜讚 were made for shade, to make it more comfortable. So it's for, so that is not something that Hashem had to give us to survive. So only in that is revealed, shows the love, the special love Hashem has to the Yidden. When He gives us, when He gave us then all our necessities, that doesn't show a special love, because He's obligated to do that. But when He gave us extra to make us more comfortable, that shows the special love that the Eibershter has to the Yidden. And that's why the mon is something that they had to have, it was necessity, the water, so that's not that we celebrate, Eibershter gave us to celebrate to show how much He loves us, is the fact that He gave us extra, He gave us more comfortability, that's what we have to, that shows that the Eibershter loves us.
So the Rebbe says, based on that we could answer the kashya also: why if we make a zecher for the clouds, why only for the fact that it gave us shade, and not for the fact that the clouds straightened out the way and it killed the snakes, etc., etc.? For the same reason: because the fact that the clouds killed the snakes and made it that we should be able to walk, that's a necessity, and that doesn't really show the special love the Eibershter has to the Yidden. Only that part of the clouds, that it gave us shade and we were able to be comfortable, more than what is necessary, that's what shows the Eibershter's love. And that's why we have the mitzvah to remember that, because the mitzvah of sukkah, besides all the other hints and all the other lessons that we take from the mitzvah of sukkah, it is also to show how much the Eibershter loves the Yidden. And that's why the zecher was made only for the fact that the clouds gave us shade, which made us more comfortable. So this is a lesson for us, that besides all the other lessons that we take from sukkah, we should also keep in mind that this brings out the special love that the Eibershter has to the Yidden, that He gives them not only what's necessary, but He gives us extra that should be more comfortable.
