SUKKOT

Vort for sukkos

Why the Baal Shem Tov, the Maggid, and the five Chabad Rebbeim join the Biblical ushpizin specifically in the sukkah, and not on any other Yom Tov.

Part of Sukkot

Explains the Frierdiker Rebbe's chassidishe ushpizin, the Baal Shem Tov, Mezritcher Maggid, and the first five Chabad Rebbeim, as guests who visit precisely because Sukkos is when a Yid openly lives as a guest in this world, dwelling in a temporary structure. Reads that self-perception, as a guest sent here on a mission, as the very thing that draws down the strength these great visitors bring for the year ahead.

  1. Zoharโ€™s Ushpizin List for Sukkot

says in Zohar that during Sukkos we have ushpizin, certain guests come to the sukkah the whole week. And that is Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, Moshe, Aharon, Yosef and David. And then the Frierdiker Rebbe said that we have ื—ืกื™ื“ื™ืฉืข ืื•ืฉืคื™ื–ื™ืŸ, and the Rebbe dwelt on it very much. And that is the Baal Shem Tov, the Mezritcher Maggid, the Alter Rebbe, the Mitteler Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek, the Rebbe Maharash and the Rebbe Rashab. Now, we understand that by coming to the sukkah, these great people come to the sukkah, it is to give us more koach, more strength, more energy to continue our service of Hashem. But the question is, why do they only come on Sukkos? Why don't they come on other Yomim Tovim? Why don't they come on Pesach or Shavuos? Why do they come davka on Sukkos? And the answer the Rebbe gives is because the whole idea of Sukkos is that we show that we are guests in this world. We live in a temporary dwelling that is to show that we realize that our whole living in this world is only temporary, and we're here as guests sent by Hashem with a mission to bring down Godliness into this world. So we really are guests. And since we behave like guests in this world, realizing that the true greatness is in the heavenly shamayim, but we are down here with a mission, as guests that are sent sometimes with a mission to do things, so when we realize that, that we are guests, that's when we are zocheh that the Oibershter sends guests to us to give us the strength to be able to fulfill our mission throughout the whole year.
