The Breaking of the Tablets

Why Moshe breaking the luchos earned him the Torah's greatest praise, not a punishment

Part of Jewish History · 51:53

The shattering of the first luchos is unpacked from every angle: the two classic reasons Moshe broke them, the Midrashim describing the letters and the ruach hakodesh flying off the stone, and why Chazal insist Hashem thanked and praised him for it rather than merely tolerating it. The deeper explanation shows how the broken luchos were what finally gave Klal Yisrael the brokenness of heart needed to receive Torah Sheba'al Peh, while the whole luchos represent the confident use of one's own mind in learning. The two pieces sitting together in the Aron are read as the model for holding humility and intellectual engagement at once, and the episode is framed as the clearest expression of Moshe's ahavas Yisrael.

Why Breaking the Luchos Was Uniquely Terrible

The topic tonight is the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转, and the reason I chose this topic for today is obvious, because it is in the 驻专砖讛 of the week. Now usually we don't connect the 砖讬注讜专 to the 驻专砖讛, but it just turned out that it's a good topic to discuss. The reason 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转 was because the Jews made the golden calf. But we're not going to discuss the golden calf, what that meant and why they did it. That, if you remember, we had a different 砖讬注讜专, and we discussed all the aspects of the 讞讟讗 讛注讙诇. What we're going to discuss tonight is purely the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 as a subject in itself. Now we know that the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 is definitely something negative that happened in Jewish history. It's obvious. Imagine, they broke the 诇讜讞讜转, 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转. We see it also from the fact that we actually have a fast day in connection to the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转. We know that 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝, that we fast on 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝, the 17th day of 转诪讜讝, one of the reasons is because that was the day that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转. There are other reasons also, that the wall of 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 was broken, other reasons, but the first reason why we fast on 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝 is because 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转. Imagine, we made a fast day for all generations because of what 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 did. That just shows how terrible it is. And if we just think about it for a moment, we could understand how bad it was. The 诇讜讞讜转, what were the 诇讜讞讜转? The 诇讜讞讜转 were the tablets made by 讛砖诐 Himself. It says in 讞讜诪砖 it's called 诪注砖讛 讗诇讜拽讬诐, it was made by 讛砖诐. And the 讻转讘, what was written on the 诇讜讞讜转, what was engraved in the 诇讜讞讜转, were 诪讻转讘 讗诇讜拽讬诐, it was written by 讛砖诐 Himself, 讛砖诐's own hand. Which is even more than the second 诇讜讞讜转. Afterwards when 讛砖诐 replaced the 诇讜讞讜转 by a second pair of 诇讜讞讜转, the second one was not 诪注砖讛 讗诇讜拽讬诐, it was not cut out by by 讛砖诐, but by 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. It was 诪讻转讘 讗诇讜拽讬诐, it was written by 讛砖诐, and even that in a different level than the first. But the first 诇讜讞讜转 had all the top top qualities. It was 100% Godly. And 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 took the 诇讜讞讜转 and threw them down and broke them. So you could imagine how terrible that was, what kind of terrible event that was, that the 诇讜讞讜转 were broken. Concerning why he broke the 诇讜讞讜转, what made him break the 诇讜讞讜转, we know it's in connection to the 讞讟讗 讛注讙诇, to the sin that they did with the golden calf, but what was the reason he broke the 诇讜讞讜转? So we find mainly two reasons brought down in the 讞讝状诇, in the 诪讚专砖讬诐, in 专砖状讬. One reason is when 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 came down from the mountain and he saw them worshipping the 注讙诇, he thought to himself, he had learned from 讛砖诐, as we learn in 讞讜诪砖, that a 诪讜诪专 cannot bring the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞. A 诪讜诪专 is somebody who converts to another religion or a person who worships idols, cannot bring the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, the special sacrifice that every 讗讬讚 is supposed to bring on 注专讘 驻住讞. So the 驻住讜拽 says that a 诪讜诪专 cannot bring the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞. So 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 said to himself, if one person who is a 诪讜诪专 cannot do the 诪爪讜讛 of 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, here I have not one 诪爪讜讛, I have the whole 转讜专讛, because the 诇讜讞讜转 contained the whole 转讜专讛, even though there were only Ten Commandments written on the 诇讜讞讜转, but these Ten Commandments contained the whole 转讜专讛. There are even 住驻专讬诐 who explain how each 诪爪讜讛 is hinted in one of the Ten Commandments, each one of the 613 诪爪讜转. So 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 said to himself, here I have the 诇讜讞讜转 which contain the whole 转讜专讛, and here we have the 讗讬讚谉 who are all 诪讜诪专讬诐, they're all worshipping idols. So what should I do, give them the 诇讜讞讜转? If they can't bring one, do one 诪爪讜讛, the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, certainly I can't give them the whole 转讜专讛. So 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 decided to throw it down and break it. That's one reason given. Another reason given is based on a 诪砖诇, a parable. 讞讝状诇 gave a 诪砖诇 of a king who left, and he left some servants, some maids, and also he had a wife, actually there it says an 讗专讜住讛, a 讻诇讛 of his, and the 砖驻讞讜转, the maids, didn't behave properly, they behaved immoral, and the name came out that not only they did it, but his wife did it too. So there was a friend of the 讞转谉 who decided to save the wife of the king. So what did he do? He took the 讻转讜讘讛 and tore it up. So now that she had no 讻转讜讘讛, when the king came back and they started looking into it, they couldn't judge her as a married woman who deserved the punishment that she deserved, because he said, \"Where is the 讻转讜讘讛?\" And the same thing here, it says 讛砖诐 is the 讞转谉, the 注专讘 专讘, these people, these non-Jewish people who came along with the Jews when they went out of 诪爪专讬诐, they are compared to the 砖驻讞讜转, to the maid, and they're the one that really sinned. The friend of the king is 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. The wife of the king, of 讛砖诐, that is the 讗讬讚谉. So 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, in order to save the 讗讬讚谉 from the punishment, he tore the 讻转讜讘讛, he broke the 诇讜讞讜转, the 诇讜讞讜转 are compared to the 讻转讜讘讛. So now there is no proof that she is married, that the Jews have this commitment to 讛砖诐, so he broke the 诇讜讞讜转. And by doing that, he saved the Jewish people, because otherwise they would have been punished like a woman who is married, who behaves immoral. So by doing this to save the Jewish people. So there are these two reasons given why 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转. There are also 诪讚专砖讬诐 we have, what exactly took place when 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转. In one place, it says that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 saw the words from the 诇讜讞讜转 fly out. 讗讜转讬讜转 驻讜专讞讜转, they were flying. So he realized 砖讗讬谉 讘讛诐 诪诪砖, now that the 诇讜讞讜转 don't have the words, then what's the use of the 诇讜讞讜转? So he broke it. Another place, it says that it wasn't that the words flew out, it says that he saw that the 专讜讞 讛拽讜讚砖, the holy spirit that's there in the words of the 诇讜讞讜转 flew out. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 could see it, so he decided, 讗讬谉 讘讛诐 诪诪砖, why do I need, why that I should give them the 诇讜讞讜转, he threw it down. Another place it says that he felt it very heavy. When the words flew out, the life of the 诇讜讞讜转 left, so it became very heavy. We know that if a human, person is alive, live weight is much lighter, dead weight is much heavier. So the 诇讜讞讜转 became very heavy, and they were very heavy obviously, they were made of stone, rock, 住谞驻讬专讬讜谉, so they were very heavy. But the life of the 诇讜讞讜转 kept it, so it wasn't so heavy. But he saw it became very heavy, so he dropped it. And even says in 诪讚专砖讬诐 that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 had to fight with the 讝拽谞讬诐. The 讝拽谞讬诐, the elders of the Jews came and grabbed, they saw 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 wanted to throw the 诇讜讞讜转 down, they wouldn't let him. They came and they grabbed onto it. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 fought with them, wrestled with them, pulled it out, and then threw the 诇讜讞讜转 down. And it's based on the 驻住讜拽 where it says, 讜讗转驻讜砖, \"I grabbed onto the 诇讜讞讜转,\" the 驻住讜拽 says, 诪砖讛, when he repeated the story in 讞讜诪砖 讚讘专讬诐, he says, \"I grabbed onto the 诇讜讞讜转.\" What did he grab onto? He was holding it. He had to grab it away from them. So there are different 诪讚专砖讬诐, and all I'm bringing in is different things that we learn in 讞讝状诇 concerning the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转. But as we know, this class is not a class of history, or a class of just bringing in 诪讚专砖讬诐. I try to explain all the different subjects that we talk about according to the, the way 讞住讬讚讜转 looks of it, at it, from the angle of 讞住讬讚讜转, and especially the way the 专讘讬 explains these 注谞讬谞讬诐, in the 砖讬讞讜转 and in the 诪讗诪专讬诐. So what we have to explain here is the way 讞住讬讚讜转 looks at what happened when the 诇讜讞讜转 were broken.

Chassidus Finds the Positive: Hashem's Thanks and Rashi's Praise

And as usual, when 讞住讬讚讜转 looks at something, even if something is negative, 讞住讬讚讜转 always finds something positive in it. That we see all over. Any subject that we find in the 转讜专讛 that seems to be very negative, learning 讞住讬讚讜转, and we see that really there's a lot of positive in it. Starting from the most famous one, the 诪专讙诇讬诐, the twelve spies, they came back, the ten spies, they spoke 诇砖讜谉 讛专注 against 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, which was the cause of all the problems we have, because the Jews cried then and it was 转砖注讛 讘讗讘, and 讛砖诐 said, \"Because of that, I'll destroy the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 later,\" all kinds, started with the 诪专讙诇讬诐. We learn in 讞住讬讚讜转, it explains that really the 诪专讙诇讬诐, there was something positive from what they did. Story of 拽专讞, we learn there was something positive. Anything we learn, the 诪讘讜诇, we learn in 讞住讬讚讜转 that it was, lot of positive in it. So 讞住讬讚讜转 talks, looks at everything from the positive side. Because the truth is, if it's in 转讜专讛, or something from 讛砖诐, even if it looks like it's negative, there has to be something positive in it, in it. And 讞住讬讚讜转 always tries to look deeper than superficial, and finds the positive part. When it comes to the 诇讜讞讜转, to the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转, we don't have to come onto 讞住讬讚讜转 to see that there is something positive in it, but that we see from the 讙诪专讗 itself, from the 讞讝状诇. Because it says in 讞讜诪砖 that 讛砖诐 said to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 afterwards, after he forgave them, he said to 诪砖讛, 驻住诇 诇讱 砖谞讬 诇讜讞讜转 讗讘谞讬诐 讻专讗砖讜谞讬诐 讗砖专 砖讘专转, you shall carve out for yourself new 诇讜讞讜转, replace the 诇讜讞讜转, like the ones that you broke. And the 驻住讜拽 uses the term 讗砖专 砖讘专转, the ones that you broke. And the 讞讝状诇 say that the word 讗砖专 comes also from the word 讬讬砖专 讻讞. When you thank somebody, you say 讬讬砖专 讻讞, which really means it's a 讘专讻讛, your strength, you should get strength, you should It's a blessing. So 讛砖诐 said to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, \"讬讬砖专 讻讞讱 砖砖讘专转.\" When he said, \"Make new 诇讜讞讜转,\" 讗砖 讗砖专 砖讘专- like the ones 讗砖专 砖讘专转, like the ones you broke, is the ones that I'm thanking you for breaking it. So 讛砖诐 thanked 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 for breaking it. And the 讙诪专讗 actually says that there were a few things that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 did on his own. Most of the things we find 诪砖讛 did wasn't on his own; he was told by 讛砖诐. There are very few things that we see in the 转讜专讛 that 诪砖讛 did on his own, and 讛砖诐 was 诪住讻讬诐, 讛砖诐 agreed that he was right. For instance, it says, according to one opinion, that when 讛砖诐 said, \"I'll give the 转讜专讛,\" he said, \"I'll give the 转讜专讛 in three days,\" which meanings means two days and the third day, \"I'll give you the 转讜专讛.\" 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 added one day, and he said, \"We need another day for preparation,\" and 讛砖诐 agreed. There are few things 讛砖诐 agreed to what 诪砖讛 did. This was one of the things: he broke the 诇讜讞讜转, and he didn't ask 讛砖诐, and 讛砖诐 told him later, \"讬讬砖专 讻讞.\" He thanked him, he agreed. But 专砖\"讬 adds another word. Not only did he thank him and agreed, he was 诪住讻讬诐, 专砖\"讬 says 砖讘讞讜, he praised him. Now, we say he praised him, obviously 讛砖诐 meant to say you did something good, not something right. Sometimes you do something that's negative, but you have never- 谞注讘注讱, no chance, no choice, you got to do it. If you give someone a punch because that's the only way you'll protect yourself, so you did something right, but no one will praise you for it. They'll say, \"Well, you did the right thing because that's the only way you would protect yourself.\" But it's not something to be praised. So here, too, it's not only 讛砖诐 agreed that you did the right thing. You came to a situation, you saw that this is what you had to do, so you had to break the 诇讜讞讜转. 谞注讘注讱, had to break the 诇讜讞讜转. But it's nothing to be praised about. 讛砖诐 praised him! So, obviously, the 讞讝\"诇 tell us that there was something positive in the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转. And we see even more than that. We look at the end of 讞讜诪砖, the end of 讞讜诪砖, the last words, and we know that the last words are the most important words of the whole 转讜专讛. The first words are the most important and the end. We know that the beginning is always the most important because in the beginning you let you set the foundation, and everything is based on the beginning. And also the end is when everything comes to the it's in the climax, it comes to the end. 讛讻诇 讛讜诇讱 讗讞专 讛讞讬转讜诐, everything goes according to the end. So the last words of the 转讜专讛 are 诇注讬谞讬 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇. The end of the 转讜专讛 talks about the death of 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, and it speaks about how great 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 was. The 转讜专讛 praises 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, a little 讛住驻讚 on 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. And the 转讜专讛 says the way 专砖\"讬 explains the different words in the 驻住讜拽讬诐, what the 转讜专讛 says is that who is 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, he is this, he was great, he he didn't lose his strength, and all kinds of things. And it says that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 was the one that gave the 转讜专讛. Imagine, the greatest praise you could imagine. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 did all kinds of miracles: 讬爪讬讗转 诪爪专讬诐, 拽专讬注转 讬诐 住讜祝, all great things. And then the last words are 诇注讬谞讬 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, in the eyes of all the 讬讬讚谉. Now, one would think that what the 驻住讜拽 means to say that all the great things that 诪砖讛 did, he did in front of everybody, it wasn't something he did privately. So 专砖\"讬 says, \"No, that's not what the 驻住讜拽 means.\" 诇注讬谞讬 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇 is a new praise, something in addition to all the great specialties and qualities of 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, the 转讜专讛 adds something else. Something he did 诇注讬谞讬 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, something he did in the eyes of all the 讬讬讚谉. What else did he do? So when we look back to 讞讜诪砖, it says that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转 in front of the eyes of all the 讬讬讚谉. So when the 驻住讜拽 says here that there was something that 诪砖讛 did in the eyes of all the 讬讬讚谉, and this is the last, last thing of the 转讜专讛, 专砖\"讬 says it means the greatest praise you could give on 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 is that he broke the 诇讜讞讜转. 诇注讬谞讬 讻诇 讬砖专讗诇, 讜讗砖讘专诐 诇注讬谞讬讻诐, \"I broke the 诇讜讞讜转 in front of you,\" he said. He broke it in front of the eyes of all the 讬讬讚谉, that's what the 转讜专讛 means. Now, here we see that the 转讜专讛 praises 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 that he broke the 诇讜讞讜转, that's the greatest praise. Obviously, there is something special in breaking the 诇讜讞讜转. It's not that he prevented something, he broke the 诇讜讞讜转, something must be something positive, something very good here. And it's such a praise that comes after the other things. Imagine, after the fact that he gave us the 转讜专讛, after the fact that he did all the miracles, the greatest thing he did, he broke the 诇讜讞讜转. So we have to look into this: what is so special about breaking the 诇讜讞讜转? Now, at first glance, we could say that the specialty of breaking the 诇讜讞讜转 is that by doing that, he brought out the 讻讘讜讚 讛转讜专讛. When he saw how the 讬讬讚谉 behave, and they don't deserve the 诇讜讞讜转, so he broke the 诇讜讞讜转. By that, he showed the great 讻讘讜讚 of 转讜专讛 that you have to have. Not every person can just have the 转讜专讛. You behave you misbehave, you can't have the 转讜专讛. The 转讜专讛 is so special, the 转讜专讛 is so great, so people like that can't get it. So By breaking the 诇讜讞讜转, this expresses the great 讻讘讜讚 you're supposed to have for the 转讜专讛. But the truth is, it is not really enough, because to show the 讻讘讜讚 of the 转讜专讛 that it cannot be given to such people, he didn't have to break it. Why'd he have to break the 诇讜讞讜转? He shouldn't give it to them, right. Just take the 诇讜讞讜转, wrap it up, put it away someplace, hide it, but break the 诇讜讞讜转? So you can't say that the specialty of breaking breaking the 诇讜讞讜转 is the fact that this shows the great 讻讘讜讚 he has for 转讜专讛. But then there's another point we could make, that by breaking the 诇讜讞讜转, 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, as we said before, saved 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. Otherwise they would be punished. 讛砖诐 wanted to destroy them. And as we gave the 诪砖诇, by tearing the 讻转讜讘讛, he saved the wife of the king. So too, 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, by breaking the 诇讜讞讜转, saved the 讬讬讚谉. Well, imagine, that's special. And as we will explain later, that is very special, but we have to say that there must be something deeper than that, because it seems that breaking the 诇讜讞讜转 is not special because of something that came out of breaking the 诇讜讞讜转, an outcome. The breaking the 诇讜讞讜转 itself must be good, because if it's just because this saved 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇, so the breaking the 诇讜讞讜转 itself is not good. It's just through doing something negative, it saved 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇, it saved the 讬讬讚谉. So it's something very special, but not the actual breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转. We must find something in the actual breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转, that the fact that the 诇讜讞讜转 were broken, that itself is something very special that deserves to be praised. And we actually see it in something else: What did they do with the broken pieces of the 诇讜讞讜转? So it says, 诇讜讞讜转 讜砖讘专讬 诇讜讞讜转 诪讜谞讞讬诐 讘讗专讜谉. The 诇讜讞讜转, the second set, the whole ones, and the broken pieces were put into the 讗专讜谉, into the holy ark they had. And as some 专讗砖讜谞讬诐, the 专讬讟讘状讗, the 专诪讘状谉, explain, that this shows how beloved, that's the expression they use, how 讞讘讬讘, beloved it was to 讛砖诐 that they broke the 诇讜讞讜转. So the broken 诇讜讞讜转 also belonged in the 讗专讜谉. Obviously, there is something special in the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 that they deserved to go into the 讗专讜谉. So what is so good about the 砖讘讬专转 讛诇讜讞讜转, about the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转? The negative part we don't have to discuss, we know that, it's obvious, but there must be something good, as we see from all this, something good in breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转.

How the Broken Luchos Gave Us Torah Sheba'al Peh

And the answer is based on a 诪讚专砖. It says in 诪讚专砖 that 讛砖诐 said to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, \"I know you feel bad that you broke the 诇讜讞讜转. Don't feel bad.\" Why? \"If you wouldn't have broken the 诇讜讞讜转, then all the Jews would have would be only 讞诪砖讛 讞讜诪砖讬 转讜专讛, would only be 转讜专讛 砖讘讻转讘, would only be the written 转讜专讛. You would not have most of the 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, most of the oral 转讜专讛. The 诪讚专砖讬诐 and 讛诇讻讜转 and 讗讙讚讜转, as the 诪讚专砖 refers to it, you wouldn't have. Now that you broke the 诇讜讞讜转, I will give the Jews 讻驻诇讬诐 诇转讜砖讬讛. I will give them double than what they had before.\" But the word 讻驻诇讬诐, even though literally translated as double, it doesn't mean double, it's an expression of much more. You will have much more of the 转讜专讛 than you had till now. In other words, it's the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 that gave us much more 转讜专讛 than we had before. And the 讙诪专讗 讟讗拽注 says, this is an example to the concept that sometimes 讘讬讟讜诇讛 讝讛讜 讬住讜讚讛. Sometimes 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛, 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛 means wasting things of 转讜专讛, wasting time of 转讜专讛, can be the foundation of the 转讜专讛. Here 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 destroyed the 转讜专讛, but that destruction really was the building of the 转讜专讛. It's only through the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 that we really have the whole 转讜专讛 the way we have it, with all the parts of 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, of the oral 转讜专讛, which we would not have had if 诪砖讛 wouldn't have broken the 诇讜讞讜转. Now, in that case, I'll explain soon why, but what do we see from here? That there was something special, this accomplished a lot, the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 accomplished that we have much more of 转讜专讛, mainly most of 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛. But the question is, why did that have to happen only when they broke the 诇讜讞讜转? Why couldn't 讛砖诐 give the Jews 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛 without breaking the 诇讜讞讜转? The fact we see, we see from the 诪讚专砖 that this is the only way it could happen. Because if it could happen otherwise, then 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 should still feel bad. If it would have happened without the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转, then 诪砖讛 would feel bad. 讛砖诐 said to 诪砖讛, \"Don't feel bad that you broke the 诇讜讞讜转, because it's only now that you broke broke the 诇讜讞讜转, we're going to I'm going to give you all the rest of the 转讜专讛, 讻驻诇讬诐 诇转讜砖讬讛, double, much more, 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛. So obviously it's a fact, and that shows the greatness of the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转. But why? Why couldn't 讛砖诐 give 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, most of 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛 without the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转? And here is where 讞住讬讚讜转 comes in, and the 专讘讬 explains it at length, and I'll bring out the point that the 专讘讬 says. We know one thing. We say in 讚讗讜讜注谞注谉, in 砖诪讜谞讛 注砖专讛, every time we say 砖诪讜谞讛 注砖专讛, towards the end of 砖诪讜谞讛 注砖专讛, we say 讜谞驻砖讬 讻注驻专 诇讻诇 转讛讬讛, 驻转讞 诇讘讬 讘转讜专转讱. That means, I will be like dust to everyone, everyone should step on me. Open my heart to your 转讜专讛. This is what we say in 讚讗讜讜注谞注谉, and this is taken from the 讙诪专讗. Now, what is the connection between these two parts? The first part means, telling 讛砖诐, I have no ego, I am completely 讘讟诇. I nullify myself to everybody, I am nothing, which in simple words it means I'm an 注谞讬讜, meaning I don't consider myself anything, which is very important. A person should not be a 讘注诇 讙讗讜讛, a person should not have an ego, and this is what we say. Then we have another part we say, we ask 讛砖诐, please open our heart to 转讜专讛. It's a very interesting, very important prayer. We ask 讛砖诐, open our heart to 转讜专讛, we should be able to study 转讜专讛. But what's the connection between the two? We say it in one breath: 讜谞驻砖讬 讻注驻专 诇讻诇 转讛讬讛, I'm like nothing to everybody, and open my heart to 转讜专讛. So 讞住讬讚讜转 says that the connection is very simple. In order a 讗讬讚 should have his heart open to 转讜专讛, you must have the proper 讘讬讟讜诇. It's not like other subjects, 诇讛讘讚讬诇 诇讛讘讚讬诇, any subject that one learns, there's no need to have 讘讬讟讜诇 in order to understand a subject. You could learn, 诇讛讘讚讬诇, math, and you don't have to be an 注谞讬讜, you don't have to be humble in order to learn math. You could learn math whichever way you want. What's 讘讬讟讜诇? Self-nullification. So, on the contrary, a person who has more self-esteem will learn better, a person who thinks of himself more will concentrate, well, you don't need to be 讘讟诇 in order to learn another subject. Why is it that for 转讜专讛 we do need? And the answer, as we all Jews do, we answer a question with a question. As the famous joke, once a priest asked a Jew, \"How come you Jews always ask answer a question with a question?\" So he said, \"Why not?\" So, I'll answer with a question. 转讜专讛 is something that we learn with our mind. Why do we say 驻转讞 诇讘讬 讘转讜专转讱, open my heart to 转讜专讛? Should have said 驻转讞 专讗砖讬 讘转讜专转讱, open my head with 转讜专讛. 驻转讞 诪讜讞讬, open my brain with 转讜专讛. Why my heart? 转讜专讛 comes in the brain, not in the heart. The heart is a place of feeling. The answer is to learn 转讜专讛, to understand just the logic of the 转讜专讛, you don't need 讘讬讟讜诇, you don't need self-nullification, like any other subject. But there is much more in 转讜专讛. There is the Godliness that's in the 转讜专讛. And to have the Godliness of 转讜专讛, for that you have to have 讘讬讟讜诇. Why? The fact that 讛砖诐, God is in the 转讜专讛, just like 讛砖诐 himself is 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇, he's infinite, unlimited, the 转讜专讛 has an aspect of 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇 in it, an aspect of infinity in it. And a person, as smart as he is, as a good head as he has, is limited. The best head is limited. So you never could take the true essence of what the 转讜专讛 is. For that you have to have the heart. It's the 专讜讞谞讬讜转, the Godliness, the spirituality in the 转讜专讛 that's not in the brain, that's in the heart. And we ask 讛砖诐 驻转讞 诇讘讬 讘转讜专转讱, open my heart to 转讜专讛, which means I want to have that 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇, that infinity that's there in the 转讜专讛. And for that, we give an introduction. We say to 讛砖诐 讜谞驻砖讬 讻注驻专 诇讻诇 转讛讬讛, I am completely 讘讟诇, and therefore, I working on 讘讬讟讜诇, therefore I hope 驻转讞 诇讘讬 讘转讜专转讱, you will open my heart to 转讜专讛. Which means a 讗讬讚, a person cannot really grasp the truth of 转讜专讛 when he has his 讬砖讜转, his selfishness, his selfness, or whatever word we'll use, I don't know if there's such a word, his ego, when that's involved, then that limits him to be able to take the true Godliness and 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇 that's in the 转讜专讛, infinity in the 转讜专讛. And the truth is, even to understand the 转讜专讛, let's go a step further, to understand the depth of the 转讜专讛, there is no end to understanding what the the 转讜专讛 concept should go deeper and deeper and deeper. And since even the understanding of 转讜专讛 is unlimited, we have have to have the proper 讘讬讟讜诇 to be able to go further and further and further. The fact that we understand a little bit, that's just the tip of the iceberg, whatever we understand. There is so much depth to it, and therefore we need to have this proper 讘讬讟讜诇. Then we're able to take the 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇, the infinity of 转讜专讛. When we talk about the infinity of 转讜专讛, which part of 转讜专讛 expresses the infinity of 转讜专讛? Now we know 转讜专讛 is made up of two parts: 转讜专讛 砖讘讻转讘 and 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛. We have the written 转讜专讛 and the oral 转讜专讛. The written 转讜专讛 is not infinite. We take 讞讜诪砖 and five 讞讜诪砖讬诐, the words are exact, limited to what they are. You can't subtract any, you can't add any. It's 诪诪砖 exactly 诪住驻专. We know that within those words we have an infinite wisdom, infinite amount of meanings, but the words themselves are limited. 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, the oral 转讜专讛, is really infinite. Not only that there's infinite wisdom hidden in it, it's in itself infinite. There's no end to it. We have 住驻专讬诐 and 住驻专讬诐, and we constantly have more and more, and even nowadays, every day there are 讞讻诪讬诐 who come up with new interpretations of the 转讜专讛. And if they're if they're worked out to fit with the rules of what 讛砖诐 gave us, then they are part of 转讜专讛, they are part of 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛. Actually, in the 讝讛专 it says every person should try to be 诪讞讚砖, to add whatever he is able to add, a 驻砖讟'诇 in 转讜专讛. So 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛 is the 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇 of 转讜专讛. So therefore, when we talk about 转讜专讛, that in order to grasp, to get the 转讜专讛 you have to have 讘讬讟讜诇, because the 转讜专讛 is 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇 and we have to have the 讘讬讟讜诇 which then we could get the 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇, the infinity, it's more by 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛 than by 转讜专讛 砖讘讻转讘. 转讜专讛 砖讘讻转讘, since it's not really unlimited, we don't really need that same amount of 讘讬讟讜诇. When 讛砖诐 came down to 讛专 住讬谞讬 and gave us the 转讜专讛, what happened at that time? So we say, 讗转讛 讘讞专转谞讜 诪讻诇 讛注诪讬诐, he chose us, it was by 诪转谉 转讜专讛 when he chose us, and one of the things he did, 讜专讜诪诪转谞讜, you raised us. 讛砖诐 made us into special beings. Now, to be a special being is the opposite of 讘讬讟讜诇. So when it came to 诪转谉 转讜专讛, we didn't really have that 讘讬讟讜诇. Even though we know that the Jews had a level of 讘讬讟讜诇, and it says when they heard 讛砖诐 speak, it says they trembled and they were afraid, but basically, you know, that really wasn't something that came from within them. 讛砖诐 got them scared, and 讛砖诐 made them have 讘讬讟讜诇. So it's not really 讘讬讟讜诇 means that you have yourself-nullification on your own. If something from the from the outside causes it, it's not really your 讘讬讟讜诇. So by 诪转谉 转讜专讛, when 讛砖诐 gave them the 转讜专讛 and had this, what was connected to the 诇讜讞讜转, there wasn't a real 讘讬讟讜诇, and therefore at that time they were not 讻诇讬诐, vessels, they were not able yet to receive the true infinite wisdom of 讛砖诐 which we see in the 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛. When 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 came down with the 诇讜讞讜转, and he broke the 诇讜讞讜转, and he broke it in front of all the Jews, so the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转, as we see from the 讞讜诪砖, broke their hearts. And the Jews felt so down, not depressed, but so bad that they looked down at themselves, and that was the real, real 讘讬讟讜诇 that the Jews reached. When the Jews reached the 讘讬讟讜诇 through the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转, now 讛砖诐 said, \"Oh, now I'm able to give you 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛.\" And he said, \"Now 诪砖讛, don't feel bad. I was wait basically, it's hard to say these words, basically 讛砖诐, I was waiting for this. I'm waiting to give them the 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, but I can't give them as long as they are a 诪爪讬讗讜转 and they don't have the proper 讘讬讟讜诇. Now that we came to the point that you broke the 诇讜讞讜转, and this is what brought them to a 诪爪讘 of 讘讬讟讜诇, now I'm able to give the 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛, I'm able to give them the infinite part of 转讜专讛.\" And this is the positive part, looking at it from one angle, of the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转. And this is the reason why in the 讗专讜谉 you had 诇讜讞讜转 讜砖讘专讬 诇讜讞讜转, you had the 诇讜讞讜转 and the broken 诇讜讞讜转, because in order for a 讬讬讚 to study 转讜专讛, you have to have both. And now let me explain what I mean. The 诇讜讞讜转 themselves, what was the 诇讜讞讜转? They had words of 讛砖诐 carved out on the 诇讜讞讜转, not like a 住驻专 转讜专讛 where you have the words written, carved out. What's the difference between words written on parchment or on a piece of paper and words carved out? The difference is, when words are written on a piece of paper, they're very close. They basically become one. The words on the paper are one. But in truth and Not really one. They're as close as you could get. But you could scrape off the ink, and then you're left without the word. But when words are carved out in stone, the words are not a separate entity that are added to the stone. The words are made from the stone themselves. And that's why the 诇讜讞讜转, it says, were made in such a way, to tell a 讬讬讚 that a 讬讬讚 has to study 转讜专讛 in a way that you become one with the 转讜专讛. And that's actually what happens. When you study 转讜专讛, you become one with the 转讜专讛. When a person understands any word of 转讜专讛 in his mind, what happens? The words of 转讜专讛 and the Jew become one. It says in 转谞讬讗 that there is no greater 讬讞讜讚, no greater union, in the world possible than when a person studies 转讜专讛. Then the words of the 转讜专讛 and the person's mind, brain, become one. Because when you understand something in your mind, your mind at that moment is the idea that you understand. So if you understand 转讜专讛, your mind, your own brain, is now the 转讜专讛, so you become one with the 转讜专讛. So when we learn 转讜专讛, we have to use our brain, obviously. So that's what the 诇讜讞讜转 represent. The 诇讜讞讜转 represent that we have to study 转讜专讛. At the same time, we shouldn't forget that we have to have the proper 讘讬讟讜诇 in order to have the proper understanding of the 转讜专讛. The 诇讜讞讜转 represent the fact that we study, and we use our brain, and we become one with the 转讜专讛. And when we use our brain, that is the opposite, on one hand, from 讘讬讟讜诇. That means we have to use our brain and think about it and try to understand, and that's the way we're supposed to study 转讜专讛. When we study 转讜专讛, we have to use what we have. It's not enough to say, well, I have 讗诪讜谞讛 in 讛砖诐 and I have 讗诪讜谞讛 in the 转讜专讛, and I trust the 转讜专讛. I'll learn a piece of 讙诪专讗 and the 讙诪专讗 has a 拽砖讬讗. I don't understand it, I don't know what the 讙诪专讗 says. But why should I understand? If the 讙诪专讗 says it's a 拽砖讬讗, I tell you it's a 拽砖讬讗. I really trust the 讙诪专讗. What, a 讬讬讚 doesn't trust the 讙诪专讗? I trust the 讙诪专讗. I have 讗诪讜谞讛, I have 讘讬讟讜诇, who am I? What's the difference what I, I understand, I don't understand? I study, it's a 拽砖讬讗, the 讙诪专讗 gives a 转讬专讜抓, I don't know what the 转讬专讜抓 is, who cares if you know or not? No, that's not how it works. You have to understand when it's a 拽砖讬讗. You have to realize that it's something that you don't understand, I don't understand. And then when you get the answer, oh now I understand. So on one hand, there is this I that's involved, that's the only way you could learn. And at a second, at the same, at the same time, we have to look at, or know that, as I am learning, and as I am learning, the I in, of me is involved, we have to have the knowledge, the feeling of 讘讬讟讜诇 that's in the heart. We have to have that, and then we really will grasp on the 转讜专讛. So we have to have both: we have to have the 诇讜讞讜转, which represent the idea that we study 转讜专讛 and we are one with the 转讜专讛, our brain becomes one with the 转讜专讛 because we use our brain, and at the same time we have to have the 砖讘专讬 诇讜讞讜转, the broken 诇讜讞讜转, which represent the 讘讬讟讜诇. And together, we are able to study 转讜专讛. So here we see why the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 was positive, cuz this was what brought about the possibility of us having 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛.

Moshe's Ultimate Ahavas Yisrael: Sacrificing the Luchos to Save the Jews

But then we have to go to another part of the 注谞讬谉 of breaking the 诇讜讞讜转. Till now what we explained was how the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 was positive for the 转讜专讛, that we had more 转讜专讛, now we have the 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛. We have to also see why the 诇讜讞讜转 was something positive from 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜's side. As we said before that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, the 转讜专讛 when it praises 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, the greatest praise it gave 诪砖讛 is the fact that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转. So obviously, beside the 诇讜讞讜转, the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 being something positive from the 转讜专讛 aspect that now the 讬讬讚谉 have the 转讜专讛, but it has to, that we have to find something in the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 that shows a greatness in 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. And what kind of greatness? A greatness in 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 that's greater than everything else that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 did. Imagine, this is the last thing of the 转讜专讛, the greatest praise that the 转讜专讛 could give of 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. And what we said before, the explanation of having the 诇讜讞讜转 bring more parts of 转讜专讛, that's not a praise of 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 was the one that did it, he broke the 诇讜讞讜转, so he brought about the 讘讬讟讜诇. But there must be something in 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 did. As 专砖状讬 says that the last words of the 转讜专讛 is to teach us 砖谞砖讗讜 诇讘讜, that his heart picked up, that's the literal translation, to break the 诇讜讞讜转 in front of all the 讬讬讚谉. So what is there that it shows in the greatness of 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜? Well, and that question has to be answered with a question: Why does 专砖状讬 use the term 砖谞砖讗讜 诇讘讜? His heart brought him, picked him up to break the 诇讜讞讜转. Why doesn't 专砖状讬 say that he decided in his mind to break the 诇讜讞讜转? Why the heart again? Here again we find 谞砖讗讜 诇讘讜. An interesting expression. 谞砖讗讜 诇讘讜 means his heart picked up. Picked up where? What kind of picking up? Obviously, the 转讜专讛, 专砖状讬 is trying to teach us what happened here when 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转. So the explanation is, we said before that what made 诪砖讛 break the 诇讜讞讜转, that he saw what the 讬讬讚谉 did and he wanted to save 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇, as the 诪砖诇 of the king and his wife. So by breaking the 诇讜讞讜转, 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 saved 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. Now when we start analyzing what took place here, we'll see what it what happened by 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, what 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 had to go through in order to break the 诇讜讞讜转. So let's analyze it. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, you can imagine how close 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 was to the 转讜专讛, how dear the 转讜专讛 was to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. It's probably the dearest thing 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 had at all. The 转讜专讛 is called 讝讻专讜 转讜专转 诪砖讛 注讘讚讬. It's called the 转讜专讛 of 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. Why? Because 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 gave his life for the 转讜专讛. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, it says 诪砖讛 拽讬讘诇 转讜专讛 诪住讬谞讬, 诪砖讛 received the 转讜专讛 from 住讬谞讬. The 转讜专讛 and 诪砖讛 are really one. Here we had the 转讜专讛 in the 诇讜讞讜转, which contained the whole 转讜专讛, and in which way, as we said before, the 转讜专讛 that was written by 讛砖诐, made by 讛砖诐, carved out by 讛砖诐, written by 讛砖诐, given to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 with 讛砖诐's hands. Now you can imagine how dear the 诇讜讞讜转 were to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. Imagine how dear it would be to us if we, simple Jews, would be able to get the 诇讜讞讜转, such 诇讜讞讜转 from 讛砖诐 himself. How dear it would be to us. Imagine how dear it was to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. Nevertheless, when 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 saw that the Jews are in danger, he was ready to break the 诇讜讞讜转 in order to save the 讬讬讚谉. Can you imagine what kind of 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇 that must be? How much 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 felt in order to do such a thing? The 诪住讬专转 谞驻砖 that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 had to break the 诇讜讞讜转 that were given to him by 讛砖诐 in order to save the 讬讬讚谉, could imagine what kind of 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇 that is. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 was ready to give up everything that he stood for for 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. And we see that also in something else, but here it's more than that. We see when they did the 注讙诇 and 讛砖诐 wanted to destroy 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇, 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 said, \"Please don't, 讜讗诐 讗讬谉 诪讞谞讬 谞讗 诪住驻专讱 讗砖专 讻转讘转. If you're not going to forgive them, erase my name from the 转讜专讛.\" And here we have the same thing. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 and the 转讜专讛 are one. He's ready to give up that great level of having his name in the 转讜专讛. He said, \"Erase my name, because if you don't forgive 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇, I don't want my name there.\" So that's a 诪住讬专转 谞驻砖. But that's a 诪住讬专转 谞驻砖 just in something to take out his name, but there's nothing that he did. This is even stronger. He did a 诪注砖讛, he did an act which meant for him to break the 诇讜讞讜转 in order to save 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. And this is the greatest praise that the 转讜专讛 could give for 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, the fact that he had such great 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇. And that's why 专砖状讬 uses the term 谞砖讗讜 诇讘讜, it's connected to his heart. Because 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇 is an emotion that you have in your heart. His heart had such great emotion of 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇 that he was able to break the 诇讜讞讜转. And 专砖状讬 uses the term 谞砖讗讜 诇讘讜 means his heart was picked up. Basically what it means, that he had to pick up his heart over something else. There was something in his heart that meant a lot to him, and that's the 转讜专讛. The 诇讜讞讜转, which is the essence of the 转讜专讛, you could imagine what that meant for him in his heart. But then he went even beyond that. 谞砖讗讜 诇讘讜, he picked up his heart on top of that, because the 讬讬讚谉 meant to him more than the 转讜专讛. Because that's what 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 is. 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜's greatest 诪注诇讛 is, the greatest quality is his 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇, his being one with 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. And 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇 means to him more than anybody else, anything else. And he did this in front of all the 讬讬讚谉. One of the reasons is to teach us a lesson, to show us, you see what 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇 means, that it's more important even than the 诇讜讞讜转, and you could break the 诇讜讞讜转 for 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇, which is so hard for him, his greatest 诪住讬专转 谞驻砖. And the truth is, after 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 did this, This is really what we find by all other leaders of generations, which are all called 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, that they would give up their own 注讜诇诐 讛讘讗, their own greatness, things that they would lose, things which are dear to them to help another 讬讬讚. There are so many stories, just one story of the 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘. 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 once couple came to the 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 asking a 讘专讻讛 for children, so the 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 gave them a 讘专讻讛. But then the 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 heard a voice from heaven come out and say, \"These people, this couple is destined never to have children. It's against their nature, and it's against their 诪讝诇, and it's against everything that was written in 砖诪讬诐. But since the 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 gave them a 讘专讻讛, 讛砖诐 says I have to listen. And I will do it because the 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 said, but because he forced 讛砖诐 to go against the nature, the 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 will lose his 注讜诇诐 讛讘讗.\" When the 讘注诇 砖诐 讟讜讘 heard this, he started smiling, he said, \"Oh, now I could serve 讛砖诐 not for 注讜诇诐 讛讘讗! I can serve 讛砖诐 诇砖诪讛!\" Then a voice came out from heaven and said, \"You just got it back.\" But what it was that he, to help another 讬讬讚, and he probably suspected this could happen, and he knew what was going on, but to help another 讬讬讚 he doesn't care about his 注讜诇诐 讛讘讗. We find throughout history different cases. For instance, the 诪驻专砖讬诐 say by 讬讜谞讛, the famous story of 讬讜谞讛 and the 诪驻讟讬专 讬讜谞讛, everyone on 讬讜诐 讻讬驻讜专 runs for 诪驻讟讬专 讬讜谞讛, what's the story of 讬讜谞讛? 讛砖诐 told 讬讜谞讛, \"Go to 谞讬谞讜讛 and tell 谞讬谞讜讛 that they should do 转砖讜讘讛, if not I will destroy the city.\" So it says he ran away, he didn't want to listen to 讛砖诐. What does that mean? He's a 谞讘讬讗! Imagine, 讬讜谞讛 was a 谞讘讬讗. What's a 谞讘讬讗? A 谞讘讬讗 is a person, besides the prophecy he gets, but you have to be ready to be a 谞讘讬讗, that means you reach a level that you're so close to 讛砖诐 that you're able to be a 谞讘讬讗. A person that was so close to 讛砖诐 heard 讛砖诐 Himself tell him, \"Go do this,\" and he ran away? We are not 谞讘讬讗讬诐. If we would hear from 讛砖诐, what would we've run away? How could you run away? So the 诪驻专砖讬诐 say like this: why did he run away? He was afraid that the people from 谞讬谞讜讛 who were 讙讜讬诐 would listen and they would do 转砖讜讘讛. He was afraid. What's what's wrong with that? Then there would be a 拽讟专讜讙 against 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. You know what the 砖讟谉 would say to 讛砖诐? \"Look, these 讙讜讬诐 are doing 转砖讜讘讛, and what about your Jews? They don't.\" So he didn't want that to happen. So he was ready to not listen to 讛砖诐, he was ready not to give over the 谞讘讜讗讛. And the 讚讬谉 is if a 谞讘讬讗 does not give over the 谞讘讜讗讛, he's 讞讬讬讘 诪讬转讛, he's supposed to he deserves to die. He was ready for that. But there should be no negative complaint against the Jews. And that's what a 谞讘讬讗 is, to give up from himself in order to help Jews. And then just to finish with another story that I don't remember if it's concerned with the 拽讗诪讗专谞注专 or with the 讝讜讜注讛讬诇注专, one of the great great greatest 驻讜讬诇讬砖注 专讘讬'住, that once they brought a 讚讬讘讜拽 to him. They brought a person that a 讚讬讘讜拽 came into the person, and they brought to him that he should get the 讚讬讘讜拽 out. So he started speaking to this 讚讬讘讜拽. What's a 讚讬讘讜拽? A 谞砖诪讛 that doesn't find peace and finally finds itself in someone's body and rests and doesn't want to go out. And the person who it's in has a lot of pain and suffering, etcetera, you could imagine. So this great 爪讚讬拽 started speaking to this 讚讬讘讜拽, and he asked him, \"Who are you?\" He said, \"I'll tell you. You learn in 转谞状讱 that 讝讻专讬讛 讛谞讘讬讗, the great 谞讘讬讗 讝讻专讬讛 prophesied that there will be a 讞讜专讘谉 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, and the 讬讬讚谉 killed him. I was the first one. I, when he said his prophecy, I ran up to him and gave him the first 驻讗讟砖. And then everyone else came and hit him and we killed him. And since then, my 谞砖诪讛 doesn't find any peace, and finally I found peace in this person's body.\" So the 拽讗诪讗专谞注专, I think it was the 拽讗诪讗专谞注专, tried to do things to get the 讚讬讘讜拽 out. So he started playing around with his 爪讬爪讬转 and, as the expression goes, he was 诪讬讬讞讚 讬讬讞讜讚讬诐. He did all kinds of things, I don't know, if I'd know, I'd do it. All kinds of 诪讬讬讞讚 讬讬讞讜讚讬诐 things that should help. And as he's doing it, this 谞砖诪讛 started laughing. He says, \"Why are you laughing?\" He says, \"Now you're in this generation, such a big 爪讚讬拽, you're able to do this. In my times, every,\" the expression goes, \"every shoemaker, every tailor, every simple Jew was able to do this.\" So he says, \"Yeah? If you guys were so great, why did you kill 讝讻专讬讛?\" He says, \"I'll tell you why. We had a 拽讘诇讛, we had a tradition that if a 谞讘讬讗 does not give over the prophecy, it does not come true. Had 讝讻专讬讛 not given over the prophecy of the 讞讜专讘谉 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, it would have not come true. Now, we knew the 讚讬谉 that he has to do it, there's a 讛诇讻讛 that a 谞讘讬讗 must give over the prophecy, if not he deserves to die. But we felt he should\" not given over, been a 讻讜讘砖 讗转 谞讘讜讗转讜 we call, which means he would have done an 注讘讬专讛, but it would have saved 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇 from the 讞讜专讘谉, and that's why we killed him. So when he heard that, he said, okay, you guys have some something behind in what you did, and he started 讚讗讜讜注谞注谉, anyway, he promised to say 拽讚讬砖 for the 谞砖诪讛, and the 谞砖诪讛 left, the 讚讬讘讜拽 left him. This is what really what a 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, a 谞砖讬讗 of a generation is, but it all started with 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 here, that 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 broke the 诇讜讞讜转 to save 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. And this is why the last and the biggest praise that 转讜专讛 could give to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 is that he broke the 诇讜讞讜转. So here, as a 住讱 讛讻诇, as a summary of what I said, is that in the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转, we find the negative part that's obvious, but the positive part is, there's a positive part from the 转讜专讛 aspect, and there's a positive part from 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜's aspect. In the 转讜专讛 aspect, that it is only through the breaking of the 诇讜讞讜转 that we were 讝讜讻讛 to have the whole 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛 because that's brought the real 讘讬讟讜诇 into the 讬讬讚谉, and they were 讝讜讻讛 to have the 讘诇讬 讙讘讜诇, the infinity of the 转讜专讛, and also as far as 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 is concerned, 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 expressed the greatest possible level of 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇 towards the 讬讬讚谉 through breaking the 诇讜讞讜转, and that's why this is the greatest praise. And from this we have to take a lesson that we also have to give up of ourselves for helping another 讬讬讚, for 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇. And if we do that, we know this is one of the things that will bring 诪砖讬讞, because the 讞讜专讘谉 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖 came as a result of 砖谞讗转 讞谞诐, of hatred between one Jew and another, so 讗讛讘转 讬砖专讗诇 will definitely bring 诪砖讬讞 讘诪讛专讛 讘讬诪讬谞讜. 讗诪谉. Yes. 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝. 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝. 转砖注讛? 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝 was when the 诇讜讞讜转 were broken, the 17th of 转诪讜讝. 转砖注讛 讘讗讘 was for the 讞讜专讘谉. We fast on 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝, one of the things, because of the wall of 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, but also because of the breaking. Five things happened on 砖讘注讛 注砖专 讘转诪讜讝. I don't know if for breaking the 诇讜讞讜转 itself we would fast, but together with others, we fast for that too. Okay, that's another aspect. Yes. Yes. That's the source of the of the 讘注诇 转砖讜讘讛 movement. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Question is, if 讛' didn't plan to give the 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛 when He gave the first 诇讜讞讜转, then how would we be able to learn 转讜专讛 砖讘讻转讘, oral the written 转讜专讛, without having the interpretation of 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛? Now, what it probably means, it doesn't say this clearly, what probably means is that enough to learn we would have, but all the extra interpretations and things which are not important for the actual doing of the 诪爪讜转, that we wouldn't have. And that is probably the majority of the 转讜专讛. You have all the 住驻专讬诐, hundreds, thousands and thousands of 住驻专讬诐 that we have, most of them don't discuss exactly how to do the 诪爪讜转 and how to 驻住拽谉 the 驻住拽. That probably we would have. We would be able to learn it, but not if it says 诪讚专砖讬诐 and 讛诇讻讜转 and 讗讙讚讜转, all the different additional things. That's one thing. Another thing is, probably 讛' when He gave us the 转讜专讛, did it, could be, knowing that later on the 诇讜讞讜转 will be broken, and yeah, He knew. Just like it says concerning 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉. It says that if 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉 would not sin with the 讞讟讗 注抓 讛讚注转, eating from the tree, then the world would be different. The world would be a holy place. The whole purpose of the creation of the world, 讛' wanted a 讚讬专讛 讘转讞转讜谞讬诐. He wanted a dwelling place in a low world, a world where godliness is concealed, a world which is the truth is not seen, and in that world we should bring godliness, bring the truth. Had 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉 not sinned, then it wouldn't be a 转讞转讜谞讬诐, it wouldn't be a world like that. So what did 讛' have in mind when He created the world? What was the purpose? So one of the explanations is that He knew that 讗讚诐 讛专讗砖讜谉 would sin. He didn't force him, He didn't take away his free choice, but He knew what his choice will be, and based on that He created the world. The same thing here. 诪砖讛 讛' knew that eventually the 诇讜讞讜转 will be broken, and then He will give the 转讜专讛 砖讘注诇 驻讛. That's another interpretation. Yes, you were going to ask something? Okay, we'll take from the woman's side, yeah. 诪砖讛 wasn't punished for breaking the 诇讜讞讜转. We don't, huh? Well, superficially it was negative, like a lot of things, but in truth, it turned out to be good, and it doesn't say 诪砖讛, and actually in this one, it doesn't say there was a punishment. 讛' thanked 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, He didn't punish him for it. Right, but therefore, but we felt uplifted. Yeah, we were lifted. Wasn't because of us, but we felt great. But as we say at the end, we have to feel great, but at the same time we have to have 讘讬讟讜诇, we have to have both. Now one might ask, how could you have two opposite feelings at the same time? The 诇讜讞讜转 and the 砖讘专讬 诇讜讞讜转, the 诇讜讞讜转, the broken 诇讜讞讜转, the 诇讜讞讜转 which represent the person's mind and brain and thinking and learning, and the same thing, the 讘讬讟讜诇. Well, where were the 诇讜讞讜转 and the 砖讘专讬 诇讜讞讜转 laying? In the 讗专讜谉. The 讗专讜谉 represents the combination of two opposites. 诪拽讜诐 讗专讜谉 讗讬谞讜 诪谉 讛诪讚讛, the 讗专讜谉 took a place and didn't take place, take a place at the same time. And which, why was it that way? Because the 讗专讜谉 was the place where 讛砖诐 Himself dwelt, and 讛砖诐 is beyond opposites. 讛砖诐 is not limited to any limitations, so by 讛砖诐 everything can happen. 讛砖诐 is considered, says called, 谞讜砖讗 讛驻讻讬诐, he could contain opposites. And because 转讜专讛 is the 转讜专讛 of 讛砖诐, and we 讗讬讚谉 learn the 转讜专讛 of 讛砖诐 because we are 讗讬讚谉, we have a 谞砖诪讛 which is part of 讛砖诐, we also have that power of having two opposites at the same time: to feel the 诪爪讬讗讜转 of ourselves to be able to learn the 转讜专讛, and at the same time to feel the 讘讬讟讜诇. And that's the 专诪讝 in the fact that it was laying in the 讗专讜谉 to tell us, yeah, we can have the two opposites, and that's what's expected of a 讗讬讚. It's not easy, but we can do it. Thank you very much. Please enjoy the refreshments. Again, we'll look
