Introduction and the mnemonic 住讬诪谉

Jewish Audio on Chabad.org. Today's 砖讬注讜专 will be in 诪住讻转 住谞讛讚专讬谉 讚祝 讬"讗, but we will start on 讚祝 讬' 注诪讜讚 讘' two lines from the bottom of the 注诪讜讚. Before the 讙诪专讗 starts the 住讜讙讬讗, the 讙诪专讗 says a few words which is a 住讬诪谉 how to remember the 讛诇讻讜转 that we will be learning. As the 讙诪专讗 does many times, the 讙诪专讗 mentions a few words that if a person will remember these words, it will be easier for him to remember the 讛诇讻讜转 that he learns. And the four words here are: 讝讬诪谉, 谞砖讬讗, 爪专讬讱, 讻讚讬. This is the 住讬诪谉. If a person wants to remember the 讛诇讻讜转 that we will learn soon, so by remembering these few words, he will remember the different 讛诇讻讜转 that we will be learning. And the 讙诪专讗 starts: 转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 讗讬谉 诪注讘专讬谉 讗转 讛砖谞讛 讗诇讗 讘诪讝讜诪谞讬诐 诇讛, that you're not allowed to be 诪注讘专 the year, which means when the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 will sit down to discuss to see whether they should be 诪注讘专 the year or not, to see whether to add an extra month to the year to turn it into a leap year, you cannot do that only through members of the 住谞讛讚专讬谉 that were appointed beforehand by the 谞砖讬讗. That is the night before, the 谞砖讬讗 appointed them and told them that they should come tomorrow to sit down and discuss whether to be 诪注讘专 the year or not. Only with such people can you be 诪注讘专 the year. And the 讙诪专讗 says:

Raban Gamliel鈥檚 seven and Shmuel HaKatan鈥檚 story

诪注砖讛 讘专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, there is a story concerning 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, who was the 谞砖讬讗, 砖讗诪专, that he said, he said to his 砖诪砖, 讛砖讻讬诪讜 诇讬 砖讘注讛 诇注诇讬讬讛, prepare seven people to the upper chamber of where we will sit and discuss, so prepare seven people that early in the morning they should come there, and we should see whether to be 诪注讘专 the year. 讛砖讻讬诐, early in the morning he came there, 讜诪爪讗 砖诪讜谞讛, and he found eight people there. So obviously one person wasn't invited. 讗诪专, so he said: 诪讬 讛讜讗 砖注诇讛 砖诇讗 讘专砖讜转 讬专讚? Who is the one that came up without permission? Let him go down. 注诪讚 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 讜讗诪专, so 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉, 砖诪讜讗诇 the small, and the reason he was called 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 was because he was a great 注谞讬讜, he was very humble, so he was known as 砖诪讜讗诇 the small, the person who held himself small. So he got up and he said: 讗谞讬 讛讜讗 砖注诇讬转讬 砖诇讗 讘专砖讜转, I am the one that came up without permission. But 诇讗 诇注讘专 讛砖谞讛 注诇讬转讬, but I didn't come up in order to participate in making the 注讬讘讜专 砖谞讛, 讗诇讗 诇诇诪讜讚 讛诇讻讛 诇诪注砖讛 讛讜爪专讻转讬, but I needed to learn 讛诇讻讛 诇诪注砖讛. I wanted to see how to apply the 讛诇讻讛 that I learned to 诪注砖讛. In other words, I wanted to see actually how is it 讟讗拽注 done in order to be 诪注讘专 the 砖谞讛. 讗诪专 诇讜, so 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 said to him: 砖讘 讘谞讬 砖讘, my son, you could sit. 专讗讜讬讜转 讻诇 讛砖谞讬诐 讻讜诇诐 诇讛转注讘专 注诇 讬讚讱, really all the years are worthy, are fit that you should be the one to be 诪注讘专 it. In other words, you are that great that you are the one that is able to be 诪注讘专 the years. 讗诇讗 讗诪专讜 讞讻诪讬诐, but the 讞讻诪讬诐 said, 讗讬谉 诪注讘专讬谉 讗转 讛砖谞讛 讗诇讗 讘诪讝讜诪谞讬诐 诇讛, that we cannot be 诪注讘专 the year only with the people who were prepared before. So it is not a problem that you are here, you are worthy of being here, but the reason that I wanted you not to participate is because since you claim that you were not invited, and the 讛诇讻讛 is that you could only be 诪注讘专 the 砖谞讛 through people who were invited previously. But then the 讙诪专讗 says: 讜诇讗 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 讛讜讛, really it was not 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 that wasn't invited, 讗诇讗 讗讬谞讬砖 讗讞专讬谞讗, it was another person. 讜诪讞诪转 讻讬住讜驻讗 讛讜讗 讚注讘讚, and the reason he did it, he said that he was the one that was not invited, is in order to save the one that was really not invited from embarrassment. So therefore, he took the blame upon himself. But the 诪讛专砖"讗

Maharshal鈥檚 questions on the seven and the uninvited

asks a few questions on this 讙诪专讗. First of all, why did 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 ask for seven people to come up? Why wasn't he himself included in the seven? So really, he should have asked for six people to come up, and he himself together they would be seven. Another question: since the 讚讬谉 is that you cannot be 诪注讘专 the year unless you are invited, so then how was it that one of the 转诇诪讬讚讬诐, one of the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 went up without being invited? Didn't he know the 讚讬谉 that you cannot go up without being invited? Another question: when 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 answered, "I am the one that came up without being invited," how did he know that 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 would tell him to stay? He should have assumed that when he would have said that "I am the one that wasn't invited," 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 would say to him, "Okay, so you leave." Now if he would leave, there would be left only six that were invited. And how could you be 诪注讘专 the 砖谞讛 with six? Because even though you would have seven people left, but one of the seven was really not invited as the 讙诪专讗 says later, so you would only have six who were invited. 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 wouldn't have known that, 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 would have thought that all the seven that would have remained would have been those what were invited, because he would have thought that 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 was the one that wasn't invited, and all the rest were. So 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 would think that all the seven that were there were invited, and really one of them wasn't, so he would be 诪讻砖讬诇 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 in being 诪注讘专 the year 砖诇讗 讻讚讬谉. So therefore the 诪讛专砖''讗 learns the 驻砖讟 a little bit differently, that what 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 said that he should have seven people come up, 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 meant six, because 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 included himself in the seven, so when he said seven he meant let there seven people be there. But only six are invited to come up. The 砖诪砖 who went to invite the people didn't understand, and he thought that 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 wanted actually seven other people to be invited. So then he did invite seven people. So all the people that were there were invited. When 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 came in and he saw that there were seven there, and when the 讙诪专讗 says he saw eight, it means that he saw eight together with himself. So he saw seven other people. So he thought that one came up uninvited. He didn't think that the 砖诪砖 didn't understand and invited seven people. He thought that the 砖诪砖 understood and really invited six, and when there were seven there, one of them was uninvited. So that's why he asked, who is the one that wasn't invited, he should please leave. So 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 got up, and he said, I was the one that wasn't invited, thinking that even if he would tell him to leave, and six would be left, still they all would have been those that were invited, because the 砖诪砖 really invited them all. So there would be no 诪讻砖讜诇 if 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 would stay with the six that would remain. And when the 讙诪专讗 says really it wasn't 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 that wasn't wasn't invited, but really it was someone else, it doesn't mean that there was actually somebody else who wasn't invited, because as we said, they were all invited. But 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 when he asked to invite really six, and seven were invited, so one of them was the last one that shouldn't have been invited. Now who was the one that shouldn't have been invited? So there was another 转诇诪讬讚, another 讞讘专 of the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 that he was the one that shouldn't have been invited, but 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 took the blame on himself, meaning saying that he was the one that wasn't invited, even though the other one, the one that was lower than him, should have been the one to leave, because even though he was invited, but he was invited by mistake. But 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 wanted to save him from embarrassment, therefore 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 said, I was the one that wasn't invited, meaning in the eyes of 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 it meant that he wasn't invited, and in truth what he meant was that he was the last one to be invited, even though really he wasn't, another person was the last one, so the other one should have been the one to leave, but in order to save him embarrassment, 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 said that he was the one that wasn't invited. And the

Rabbi Shimon bar Rabbi and the garlic episode

讙诪专讗 continues, concerning this act that 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 did, that he took the blame on himself in order to save someone else embarrassment, the 讙诪专讗 says, 讻讬 讛讗 讚讬转讬讘 专讘讬, it's similar to another story, that 专讘讬 once sat, 讜拽讗 讚专讬砖, and he was teaching, 讜讛专讬讞 专讬讞 砖讜诐, and he smelled the smell of garlic, 讗诪专, so he said, 诪讬 砖讗讻诇 砖讜诐 讬爪讗, the one that ate garlic should leave. 注诪讚 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 讜讬爪讗, so 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 got up and he left. 注诪讚讜 讻讜诇诐 讜讬爪讗讜, so all the other 转诇诪讬讚讬诐 got up and they left, because when they saw that 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗, who was the main 转诇诪讬讚 of 专讘讬 left, so they also in the 讻讘讜讚 of 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 also left. 讘砖讞专, in the morning, 诪爪讗讜 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘专讘讬, 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 the son of 专讘讬 found 诇专讘讬 讞讬讬讗, met 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗, 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he said to him, 讗转讛 讛讜讗 砖爪讬注专转 诇讗讘讗, are you the one that caused my father pain? You are the one that ate the garlic that caused my father the pain? 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so he said to him, 诇讗 转讛讗 讻讝讗转 讘讬砖专讗诇, let this not be amongst 讬讬讚谉. And as 专砖''讬 has the 讙讬专住讗, he said 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐, that 讞住 讜砖诇讜诐 I should be the one to do it. But the reason I walked out is in order not to embarrass the person who actually ate the garlic. So we see he did the same thing as we had in the previous story that 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 did. This is the way 专砖''讬 explains the words of 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘专讘讬, that he said to him, are you the one that caused my father pain by eating the garlic, and he answered him, no, I am not the one that did it. But the 诪讛专砖''讗 says that why didn't 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘专讘讬 understand himself that the reason 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 walked out was not because he ate the garlic, was in order to save the real person who ate the garlic the embarrassment? Because as he saw that after 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 got up to walk out, all the 转诇诪讬讚讬诐 walked out. So he understood that the reason 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 did it was in order for them all to leave, not to embarrass the person who actually ate the garlic. So why did he say to him, are you the one that caused my father pain by eating the garlic? So therefore the 诪讛专砖''讗 learns that when he said to him, are you the one that caused my father the pain, wasn't by eating the garlic, he And therefore my father couldn't continue teaching, so you caused 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛. You caused that the people should not learn 转讜专讛. And he answered him, 诇讗 转讛讗 讻讝讗转 讘讬砖专讗诇, let this not happen amongst 讬讬讚谉. What he meant to say was that even though you are right, 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛 is a big 注讘讬专讛, but to embarrass somebody is even a bigger thing. And that's what he said, something like this, that terrible thing should not happen. And therefore, I walked out knowing it would cause 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛 in order to save a person from being embarrassed, which is even a worse 注讘讬专讛 than 讘讬讟讜诇 转讜专讛. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 讜专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 诪讛讬讻讗 讙诪专 诇讛?

Where did 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 learn to do this, to take the blame upon himself in order to save someone else from embarrassment? He learned it 诪专讘讬 诪讗讬专, from what 专讘讬 诪讗讬专 did. There's a story of this woman who came to the 讘讬转 诪讚专砖 of 专讘讬 诪讗讬专. 讗诪专讛 诇讜, she said to him, 专讘讬, 讗讞讚 诪讻诐 拽讚砖谞讬 讘讘讬讗讛. One of you, one of the students here, one of the scholars here were 诪拽讚砖 me with 讘讬讗讛, gave me 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 through relations, because the 讚讬谉 is that you can be 诪拽讚砖 a woman in one of three ways, whether it is through money or through giving a 砖讟专, a document, or through 讘讬讗讛. So she came and she said, one of you gave me 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 through 讘讬讗讛. And it seems like she didn't remember who it was, and therefore she wanted to be free to marry, and the only way she could be free to marry if she received 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 from somebody was by getting a 讙讟. So she came to the 讬砖讬讘讛 and she said, one of you gave me 拽讬讚讜砖讬谉 through 讘讬讗讛. 注诪讚 专讘讬 诪讗讬专 讜讻转讘 诇讛 讙讟 讻专讬转讜转 讜谞转谉 诇讛. So 专讘讬 诪讗讬专 got up and he wrote for her a 讙讟 and he gave it to her. 注诪讚讜 讻转讘讜 讻讜诇诐 讜谞转谞讜 诇讛. So all the 转诇诪讬讚讬诐 got up and each of them wrote a 讙讟 and gave it to her. And the reason 专讘讬 诪讗讬专 did it in order not to embarrass the one that did it, because if 专讘讬 诪讗讬专 wouldn't do it, the only way she would be free is if the 转诇诪讬讚 who actually did it would give her the 讙讟, so he would be embarrassed. In order to save him from embarrassment, so 专讘讬 诪讗讬专 himself gave her a 讙讟, and so did the other 转诇诪讬讚讬诐. So this is where 专讘讬 讞讬讬讗 learned that he should do the same, to take the blame upon himself in order to save someone else embarrassment. He learned it from 专讘讬 诪讗讬专. 讜专讘讬 诪讗讬专 诪讛讬讻讗 讙诪专 诇讛? Where did 专讘讬 诪讗讬专 learn it from? 诪砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉, from the story of 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉. And that was the story mentioned before concerning the 注讬讘讜专 讛砖谞讛, when 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 asked who is the 转诇诪讬讚 that wasn't invited, and he said it was him, when really it wasn't him. 讜砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 诪讛讬讻讗 讙诪专 诇讛? 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉, where did he learn it from? This was when 注讝专讗 said that the people should give up the wives that they took from the other nations. So 砖讻谞讬讛 讘谉 讬讞讬讗诇 from the children of 注讬诇诐 answered, 讜讬讗诪专 诇注讝专讗, and he said to 注讝专讗, 讗谞讞谞讜 诪注诇谞讜 讘讗诇讜拽讬谞讜, we are the ones that sinned against 讛砖诐, 讜谞讜砖讘 谞砖讬诐 谞讻专讬讜转 诪注诪讬 讛讗专抓, and we took strange women from the nations of the earth, 讜注转讛 讬砖 诪拽讜讛 诇讬砖专讗诇 注诇 讝讗转, and there is still hope for the 讬讬讚谉 for this. In other words, the 讬讬讚谉 are able to give up their wives and there is hope that they will do 转砖讜讘讛. Even though 砖讻谞讬讛 讘谉 讬讞讬讗诇 himself did not marry a non-Jewish woman, nevertheless, when he spoke about it, he said, 讗谞讞谞讜 诪注诇谞讜 讘讗诇讜拽讬谞讜 讜谞讜砖讘 谞砖讬诐 谞讻专讬讜转. We sinned against 讛砖诐, we took strange women. He included himself in the 注讘讬专讛. In order not to embarrass others, so he took the 注讘讬专讛 upon himself, too. So from 砖讻谞讬讛 讘谉 讬讞讬讗诇, 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 learned to do the same. 讜砖讻谞讬讛 讘谉 讬讞讬讗诇 诪讛讬讻讗 讙诪专 诇讛? Where did 砖讻谞讬讛 讘谉 讬讞讬讗诇 learn it from? Why are you falling on your face? 讞讟讗 讬砖专讗诇, the 讬讬讚谉 sinned. This was after 注讻谉 took from the 讞专诐 that he wasn't allowed to take from. So 讛砖诐 said to 讬讛讜砖注 that the 讬讬讚谉 sinned. 讗诪专 诇驻谞讬讜, so 讬讛讜砖注 said to him, to 讛砖诐, 专讘讜谞讜 砖诇 注讜诇诐, 诪讬 讞讟讗? Who sinned? Tell me who sinned. 讗诪专 诇讬讛, so 讛砖诐 said to him, 讜讻讬 讚讬诇讟讜专 讗谞讬? Am I an informer? Should I 诪住专 to you who did the 注讘讬专讛? 诇讱 讛讟诇 讙讜专诇讜转, go throw lots, and from there you will find out who sinned. So we see that 讛砖诐 saved the person who did the 注讘讬专讛 from embarrassment by not telling. So from 讬讛讜砖注, 砖讻谞讬讛 讘谉 讬讞讬讗诇 learned. 讜讗讬讘注讬转 讗讬诪讗, if you want I could tell you, 诪诪砖讛, that he learned it from 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. 讚讻转讬讘, it says by 诪砖讛, 注讚 讗谞讛 诪讗谞转诐, after a few people went went out to collect the 诪谉 on 砖讘转 when they were not supposed to. So 讛砖诐 was upset, and He said to 诪砖讛, "How long don't you want to listen to Me?" Even though 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 himself did not do any 注讘讬专讛, nevertheless, He included 诪砖讛 in the 注讘讬专讛 in order not to point a finger at the one that sinned. So we see that it's important to take the blame upon oneself in order to save someone else the embarrassment. So 砖讻谞讬讛 讘谉 讬讞讬讗诇 learned it out from what 讛砖诐 said to 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues,

End of prophecy and the use of bat kol

转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned: 诪砖诪转讜 谞讘讬讗讬诐 讗讞专讜谞讬诐 讞讙讬 讝讻专讬讛 讜诪诇讗讻讬, from when the last 谞讘讬讗讬诐, 讞讙讬, 讝讻专讬讛, 诪诇讗讻讬 died, 谞住转诇拽讛 专讜讞 讛拽讜讚砖 诪讬砖专讗诇, so the 专讜讞 讛拽讜讚砖 left from amongst the 讗讬讚谉, because they were the last 谞讘讬讗讬诐, so there was no more 专讜讞 讛拽讜讚砖, no more 谞讘讜讗讛. 讜讗祝 注诇 驻讬 讻谉 讛讬讜 诪砖转诪砖讬谉 讘讘转 拽讜诇. But still, they used to use a 讘转 拽讜诇. From time to time they used to hear a voice come out of from heaven and would give over things 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐, from heaven. And 转讜住驻讜转 says the reason it's called 讘转 拽讜诇, the daughter of a 拽讜诇, is because it really was like an echo. They didn't actually hear the voice from heaven itself, the voice from heaven caused an echo, and they would only hear the echo. That's why it's called 讘转 拽讜诇, because 讘转 拽讜诇 means a voice from a voice, a daughter, so to speak, of a voice, which means a reaction of the voice, so it is an echo, so they only heard an echo from the voice 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐. That's why it's called 讘转 拽讜诇. So the 讙诪专讗 says that even though there was no 谞讘讜讗讛 anymore, nevertheless they still used to hear a 讘转 拽讜诇 from time to time. And 驻注诐 讗讞转 讛讬讜 诪住讜讘讬谉 讘注诇讬讬转 讘讬转 讙讜专讬讗 讘讬专讬讞讜, once the 讞讻诪讬诐 were sitting in the second floor of the house of 讙讜专讬讗 in 讬专讬讞讜, 讜谞讬转谞讛 注诇讬讛诐 讘转 拽讜诇 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐, and a voice from heaven came out and said: 讬砖 讻讗谉 讗讞讚 砖专讗讜讬 砖转砖专讛 注诇讬讜 砖讻讬谞讛 讻诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, that there is one amongst you that is worthy that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him like 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, 讗诇讗 砖讗讬谉 讚讜专讜 讝讻讗讬 诇讻讱, but his generation is not worthy of it. 谞转谞讜 讞讻诪讬诐 讗转 注讬谞讬讛诐 讘讛诇诇 讛讝拽谉. The 讞讻诪讬诐 put their eyes to 讛诇诇 讛讝拽谉, they felt that the the 讘转 拽讜诇 meant 讛诇诇 讛讝拽谉. 讜讻砖诪转, and when 讛诇诇 讛讝拽谉 died, 讗诪专讜 注诇讬讜, they said upon him: 讛讬 讞住讬讚, 讛讬 注谞讬讜, 转诇诪讬讚讜 砖诇 注讝专讗, that, "Oy, this person was a 讞住讬讚 and he died. This person was an 注谞讬讜 and he died. He was a 转诇诪讬讚 of 注讝专讗." Meaning, he wasn't actually a 转诇诪讬讚 of 注讝专讗, 注讝专讗 lived many generations before, but what it means is that he lived similar to the way 注讝专讗 did. As we see here that the words 讻诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 are in parentheses. In other words, there are two 讙讬专住讗讜转 in the 讙诪专讗. The 诪讛专砖"诇 is not 讙讜专住 in the 讙诪专讗 that the 讘转 拽讜诇 said there is one person here that is fit that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him like 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, just like we will see later on when the same thing happened concerning 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉, there the 讙诪专讗 does not say that the 讘转 拽讜诇 said that he is worthy that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him like 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. But others are 讙讜专住. For instance, the 诪讛专砖"讗 is 讙讜专住 in the 讙诪专讗 讻诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, and the 专诪讘"诐, as it says here on the side in the 讙讬诇讬讜谉, in the end of the second seventh 驻专拽 of the 砖诪讜谞讛 驻专拽讬诐, also brings the 讙讬专住讗 that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him like 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, and also in 讬诇拽讜讟, 驻专砖转 讘砖诇讞 专诪讝 专住"讗, there it also says, 讻诪砖讛. And the 诪讛专砖"讗 here explains, why did the 讘转 拽讜诇 say that the 砖讻讬谞讛 would rest upon him like 诪砖讛? Because we find a similarity between 讛诇诇 and 诪砖讛. First of all, 讛诇诇 was a 注谞讬讜. So was 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜, as the 转讜专讛 says, 讜讛讗讬砖 诪砖讛 注谞讬讜 诪讗讚 诪讻诇 讛讗讚诐 讗砖专 注诇 驻谞讬 讛讗讚诪讛, that 诪砖讛 was the greatest 注谞讬讜, he was the most humble person that ever lived. And so too was 讛诇诇 very humble, as the 讙诪专讗 says in many places. And also, 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜 was the leader of 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇 for 40 years, and so was 讛诇诇, he was the 驻专谞住, the leader of 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇 for 40 years. So there is a strong similarity between 诪砖讛 and 讛诇诇, therefore, the 讘转 拽讜诇 said that it is fit that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him like on 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. While in the story of 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 that we will learn soon, even though he was also an 注谞讬讜, but we don't find that he was the leader for 40 years, and therefore, there we do not have the 讙讬专住讗 that the 讘转 拽讜诇 said that the 砖讻讬谞讛 could rest upon him like on 诪砖讛 专讘讬谞讜. And the reason, when they were 诪住驻讬讚 him after he passed away, they said concerning 讛诇诇, and concerning 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉, as we will see in the 讙诪专讗 soon, that he was a 讞住讬讚 and an 注谞讬讜, was because since the 讘转 拽讜诇 said that he is fit that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him, and we find in the 讙诪专讗 in 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛 that one opinion says that what is the greatest 诪讚讛 that brings a person to 专讜讞 讛拽讜讚砖 is 讞住讬讚讜转, another opinion is 注谞讬讜讜转. So therefore, since he was the person that the 专讜讞 讛拽讜讚砖 should have rested upon him, they said that his 诪注诇讛 was that he was a 讞住讬讚 and an 注谞讬讜. And The reason they said concerning 讛诇诇 that he was a 转诇诪讬讚 of 注讝专讗, because he was similar to 注讝专讗. Just like 注讝专讗 came from 讘讘诇, he came already a great scholar, and he became the leader of 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇, so too 讛诇诇 came from 讘讘诇 讜转诇诪讜讚讜 讘讬讚讜, he was a scholar by then, and he became the 谞砖讬讗 of 讻诇诇 讬砖专讗诇. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 砖讜讘 驻注诐 讗讞转 讛讬讜 诪住讜讘讬谉 讘注诇讬讛 讘讬讘谞讛, another time, 讞讻诪讬诐 were sitting in the 注诇讬讛 in the second floor in 讬讘谞讛, 讜谞讬转谞讛 注诇讬讛诐 讘转 拽讜诇 诪谉 讛砖诪讬诐, and a voice from Heaven came upon them and said, 讬砖 讻讗谉 讗讞讚 砖专讗讜讬 砖转砖专讛 注诇讬讜 砖讻讬谞讛, there is one here that is fit that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him, 讗诇讗 砖讗讬谉 讚讜专讜 讝讻讗讬 诇讻讱, but his generation is not worthy of it. 谞转谞讜 讞讻诪讬诐 讗转 注讬谞讬讛诐 讘砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉, and the 讞讻诪讬诐 put their eyes to 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉. In other words, they felt that the 讘转 拽讜诇 meant 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉. 讜讻砖诪转,

Prophecy of Shmuel HaKatan about future deaths

when he passed away, 讗诪专讜 注诇讬讜, they said on him, 讛讬 讞住讬讚 讛讬 注谞讬讜, oy a 讞住讬讚 passed away, oy an 注谞讬讜 passed away, 转诇诪讬讚讜 砖诇 讛诇诇, he's a 转诇诪讬讚 of 讛诇诇. He is similar to 讛诇诇. Just like by 讛诇诇 the 讘转 拽讜诇 said that he is a person that is fit for the 砖讻讬谞讛 to rest upon him, so too 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉 was also a person that was fit that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him. And the 讙诪专讗 continues, 讗祝 讛讜讗 讗诪专 讘砖注转 诪讬转转讜, and we actually see that he said words of prophecy, so that proved that when the 讘转 拽讜诇 said that there is a person here that is worthy that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him, it actually meant 砖诪讜讗诇 讛拽讟谉, because we see before he passed away he said words of prophecy. He said, 砖诪注讜谉 讜讬砖诪注讗诇 诇讞专讘讗, that 砖诪注讜谉 and 讬砖诪注讗诇 will die through being killed by the sword. And 砖诪注讜谉 means 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 who was the 谞砖讬讗, and 讬砖诪注讗诇 he meant 讬砖诪注讗诇, 专讘讬 讬砖诪注讗诇 讘谉 讗诇讬砖注 who was the 讻讛谉 讙讚讜诇, they will be killed through the sword. They were those of the 注砖专讛 讛专讜讙讬 诪诇讻讜转, from the ten great 转谞讗讬诐 who were killed through the Roman government. So he said that these two will be killed by sword, 讜讞讘专讜讬, and their friends, 诇拽讟诇讗, will be killed other ways. And the friends that he meant, one of them was 专讘讬 注拽讬讘讗, who the 讙诪专讗 says that was killed through the 诪住专拽讗 砖诇 讘专讝诇, they combed him with combs of metal till he finally died. And also 专讘讬 讞谞讬谞讗 讘谉 转专讚讬讜谉 who was burnt together with the 住驻专 转讜专讛, as the 讙诪专讗 says in 注讘讜讚讛 讝专讛, so that's what he said, that the others they will be killed through other ways. 讜砖讗专 注诪讗, and the other people of the nation, 诇讘讬讝讗, will have a lot of trouble, 讜注拽谉 住讙讬讗讬谉 注转讬讚讬谉 诇诪讬转讬 注诇 注诇诪讗, and a lot of 爪专讜转, a lot of trouble will come unto the world. So here we see that he prophesied things that came true because really he was worthy that the 砖讻讬谞讛 should rest upon him.

So therefore they weren't 诪住驻讬讚 讛专讜讙讬 诪诇讻讜转, so on 讬讛讜讚讛 讘谉 讘讘讗 they couldn't say what they wanted to say. Now, if the roads got spoiled during the winter time and they weren't fixed yet, and the people will not make it for 驻住讞, so that is a reason why you could add another month, and that would give the people more time to come to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐. 讜诪驻谞讬 讛讙砖专讬诐, and also because of the bridges, if the bridges were broken and the people couldn't cross the rivers and get to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 on time, that was a reason why they would 诪注讘专 the year. 讜诪驻谞讬 转谞讜专讬 驻住讞讬诐, and also because of the ovens for the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, the ovens they used to have was made of clay, and they used to stand outside. And during the winter time, because of the rain, it would get spoiled, and it would need time to dry up before they could use it. And they had to use it for the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, because the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞 had to be broiled on the open fire in these special ovens. So if the ovens weren't ready, that was a reason why they would add a month to the year, so 驻住讞 would come out a month later, and by then the ovens would already be dry and they could use it. And also 诪驻谞讬 讙诇讬讜转 讬砖专讗诇 砖谞注拽专讜 诪诪拽讜诪谉 讜注讚讬讬谉 诇讗 讛讙讬注讜, if the people who lived outside of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, if they started off to go to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 for 驻住讞, but if they would not add the extra month, they wouldn't make it on time, so that was a reason for the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 to be 诪注讘专 the year. If the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 heard, they got a notice that the people already left, and they won't make it on time, they would be 诪注讘专 the year. 讗讘诇 诇讗 诪驻谞讬 讛砖诇讙, but they wouldn't do it because of snow, because you could still walk in the snow. 讜诇讗 诪驻谞讬 讛爪讬谞讛, not because of the cold, because even if it's cold, you still could continue going and you would make it to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐. 讜诇讗 诪驻谞讬 讙诇讬讜转 讬砖专讗诇 砖诇讗 注拽专讜 诪诪拽讜诪谉, and not because of the people who lived outside of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 that didn't start off on the trip yet. If they didn't start yet, so then the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 would not 诪注讘专 the year. If they started out already and they won't make it, so then 讘讬转 讚讬谉 would add a month. But if they didn't start yet, even though if they're going to start they won't make it, but then the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 would not be 诪注讘专 the year. And as 转讜住驻讜转 says, the reason why the 讙诪专讗 says only because of the people from outside of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 would they be 诪注讘专 the year, and not because of the people from 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, why didn't the 讙诪专讗 say that also if the people within 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 itself would not make it on time to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 for 驻住讞, they would also be 诪注讘专? So 转讜住驻讜转 says, because in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 itself, even the furthest place, they would be able to make it. As 转讜住驻讜转 brings from the 讙诪专讗 in 转注谞讬转, that when do you start asking for rain after 住讜讻讜转? So it says fifteen days after 住讜讻讜转. The reason is because we didn't want to get rain till the last person of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 would reach his house, and it would take the furthest person to reach his house fifteen days. So therefore, till fifteen days, they wouldn't ask for rain. So there we see that even the furthest spot in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 was only fifteen days away from 讬专讜砖诇讬诐. So therefore, there would be no reason to be 诪注讘专 the year because of that. But people who lived outside of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, who lived very far, so if they started out to go to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 and they won't make it on time, that was a reason for the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 to be 诪注讘专 the year. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues, 转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 讗讬谉 诪注讘专讬谉 讗转 讛砖谞讛, the 讞讻诪讬诐 would not be 诪注讘专 the year, 诇讗 诪驻谞讬 讛讙讚讬讬诐 讜诇讗 诪驻谞讬 讛讟诇讗讬诐, not because of the goats and not because of the sheep. If the goats were still small, the sheep were still small, and by the time they would have to use them for the 拽专讘谉 驻住讞, they wouldn't be too big, still this was not a reason to add another month and push off 驻住讞 for another month, because the 讚讬谉 is that even though 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 you should bring the bigger ones, 讘讚讬注讘讚 you could use the small ones. So therefore, this would not be a reason to push off the year and add another month. 讜诇讗 诪驻谞讬 讛讙讜讝诇讜转 砖诇讗 驻专讞讜, and not because of the doves, the birds that did not fly. There is a 讞讬讜讘 on a woman who gives birth and on other types of people to bring 拽专讘谞讜转, birds. Now usually, if a person was 诪讞讜讬讬讘 to bring a 拽专讘谉, he wouldn't just go up to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 to bring his 拽专讘谉. What they would do is, they would wait for a 讬讜诐 讟讜讘 when they have to go up anyway, and that's when they would bring their 拽专讘谉. Now, if the birds were still small, so the people who were 诪讞讜讬讬讘 to bring the birds would if they would bring it on 驻住讞, they would have to bring very small ones. So we would think maybe the 讞讻诪讬诐 should specially add another month to the year, so 驻住讞 would be a month later, so by the time they come up for 驻住讞, the birds would have grown and they would bring big birds, that is not a reason, because like here too, 讘讚讬注讘讚 you could bring the small birds. So even though the birds haven't grown yet, still you could bring them the way they are. So therefore this is not a reason for the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 to add another month. 讗讘诇

Combined reasons in Rabban Shimon鈥檚 letter to add a month

注讜砖讬谉 讗讜转谉 住注讚 诇砖谞讛, but these would be used as an auxiliary reason for adding another month, because as we'll see later on in the 讙诪专讗, the 讙诪专讗 But those things that are mentioned later, the 讙诪专讗 says only if you have two of those reasons together, that is good enough for the 讞讻诪讬诐 to be 诪注讘专 the year. But if you only have one of those reasons, the 讞讻诪讬诐 could not be 诪注讘专 the year. The things mentioned before, like if the roads were spoiled, etc., one of those reasons is enough for 注讬讘讜专 讛砖谞讛. But the reasons mentioned later on, only if you have two of those, that's when the 讞讻诪讬诐 will be 诪注讘专 the year. And that's what the 讙诪专讗 says here, that even though these things we just mentioned now are not good enough reasons to be 诪注讘专 the year, for instance, if the goats or the sheep, etc., are not fully grown yet, so that is not enough reason for the 讞讻诪讬诐 to be 诪注讘专 the year, but it could be used as an auxiliary reason to one of the others. In other words, if you will have one of the other reasons plus one of these reasons, together that would be a good enough reason for the 讞讻诪讬诐 to be 诪注讘专 the year. And the 讙诪专讗 says 讻讬爪讚, how do we see it? So it says,

Letter of Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel explaining the added month

He was the 谞砖讬讗, and one time they were 诪注讘专 the year, and he sent out this message. The message was, 诪讜讚注讬谉 讗谞讞谞讜 诇讻讜谉, we are notifying you, 讚讙讜讝诇讬讬讗 专讻讬讻讬谉, that the birds, the doves, are still tender, 讜讗讬诪专讬谉 讚注讚拽讬谉, and the sheep are still small, 讜讝讬诪谞讗 讚讗讘讬讘讗 诇讗 诪讟讗, and the time for the grain to be ripe didn't come yet, 讜砖驻专转 诪讬诇转讗 讘讗谞驻讗讬, and it was felt it looked fine in my eyes, 讜讗讜住讬驻转 注诇 砖转讗 讚讗, and we added to this year, 转诇转讬谉 讬讜诪讬谉, 30 days. So we see here that the reason they added the extra month was because of a combination of two things. One thing was that the time of 讗讘讬讘 didn't come yet, the time for the grain to become ripe didn't come yet, and this is one of the reasons that the 讙诪专讗 gives later on that could be used for 注讬讘讜专 讛砖谞讛 if it has another reason with it. So here the other reason was that the birds were still tender and the sheep were still small. So we see here that even though we said before that this itself is not a reason for 注讬讘讜专 讛砖谞讛, but together with another thing it is a reason, and that's exactly what happened here, that the reason of the 讙讜讝诇讜转, the birds being tender and the sheep being small together with the reason that the time of 讗讘讬讘, of the ripening of the crop, didn't come yet, so together was a good enough reason for him to add 30 days to the year. But then the 讙诪专讗 says,

Debate over adding 29 versus 30 days to the leap month

诪转讬讘讬, I will ask you a 拽砖讬讗. Here we see that 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 added a month of 30 days, as he said, we're adding 30 days to the year. But we learned, 讻诪讛 注讬讘讜专 讛砖谞讛, how much is an 注讬讘讜专 of a year? How many days do we add? So the first opinion is 砖诇讜砖讬诐 讬讜诐, we add 30 days. 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 讗讜诪专 讞讜讚砖, 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 says a month, which means 29 days. So we see that 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 himself holds that you only add 29 days. So how come he himself added 30 days? And the 讙诪专讗 answers, 讗诪专 专讘 驻驻讗, 专讘 驻驻讗 said that what 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 meant when he said 讞讜讚砖, 29 days, he didn't mean it has to be 29 days. He meant 专爪讜 讞讜讚砖 专爪讜 砖诇讜砖讬诐 讬讜诐, if they want it could be a month, meaning 29 days, if they want it could be 30 days. The first opinion holds it has to be 30 days. 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 holds it could be either 30 days or 29 days. So at that time, for some reason, he felt that it should be 30 days, and that's why he made the 注讬讘讜专 讛砖谞讛 of 30 days. Then the 讙诪专讗 says, since we already mentioned the letter that was written by 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 when he notified that he was 诪注讘专 the year, so the 讙诪专讗 says,

Comparing humility of generations: Rabban Gamliel vs his son

转讗 讞讝讬, come and see, 诪讛 讗讬讻讗 讘讬谉 转拽讬驻讬 拽讚诪讗讬, look and see the difference between the strong people of the earlier generation, 诇注谞讜讜转谞讬 讘转专讗讬, to the humble people of the second generation. That even though the previous generation the people didn't seem to be so humble, the 谞砖讬讗 that the 讙诪专讗 is going to mention was 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, who was the father of 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, who was in the generation before, and he was known to be a great 转拽讬祝. He showed his authority very much, as we find in many places in the 讙诪专讗, while his son, 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, was known to be very humble. And nevertheless, when we look into the difference in the letters that they wrote concerning the 注讬讘讜专 讛砖谞讛, we see that in the letter of 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 it seems to be more humble than in the letter of 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, even though 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 was known to be a 转拽讬祝, while 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 was known to be an 注谞讜. 讚转谞讬讗, because we learned in a 讘专讬讬转讗, 诪注砖讛 讘专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, there's a story of 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, 砖讛讬讛 讬讜砖讘 注诇 讙讘 诪注诇讛, he was sitting on a step 讘讛专 讛讘讬转, on the mountain of the 讘讬转 讛诪拽讚砖, 讜讬讜讞谞谉 住讜驻专 讛诇讝, so 讬讜讞谞谉, the famous 住讜驻专, a famous scribe, 注讜诪讚 诇驻谞讬讜, was standing in front of him, 讜砖诇讜砖 讗讬讙专讜转 讗讙专讜转 讞转讜讻讜转 诇驻谞讬讜 诪讜谞讞讜转, and there were three cut pieces of paper in front of him, 讗诪专 诇讬讛, he said to him, 讟讜诇 讗讬讙专转讗 讞讚讗, take one letter, 讜讻转讜讘, and write in it, 诇讗讞谞讗 讘谞讬 讙诇讬诇讗 注讬诇讗讛 讜诇讗讞谞讗 讘谞讬 讙诇讬诇讗 转转讗讛, to our brothers from 讙诇讬诇 讛注诇讬讜谉 and to our brothers from 讙诇讬诇 讛转讞转讜谉, to our brothers from the upper 讙诇讬诇 and to our brothers from the lower 讙诇讬诇, 砖诇讜诪讻讜谉 讬砖讙讗, let there be a lot of peace unto you. This was like the introduction to the letter. And then the letter said as follows: 诪讜讚注讬谞谉 讗谞讞谞讜 诇讻讜谉, we are notifying you, 讚讝诪谉 讘讬注讜专讗 诪讟讗, the time of 讘讬注讜专 came, 诇讗驻专讜砖讗 诪注砖专讗 诪诪注讟谞讗 讚讝讬转讗, that you should take off 诪注砖专 from the place where you keep your 讝讬转讬诐, where you keep your olives. The 讚讬谉 is that twice within a cycle of 砖诪讬讟讛 is the 讝诪谉 of 讘讬注讜专, because the 讚讬谉 is that every year there are certain things that must be taken off from the crop that grows. You must take off 转专讜诪讛 and give it to the 讻讛谉, you must take off 诪注砖专 专讗砖讜谉 and give it to the 诇讜讬, you must take off 诪注砖专 砖谞讬, and that would be kept by the owner, but it had to be taken to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 and eaten only in 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 under certain conditions. This was in the first year of the 砖诪讬讟讛 and the second year of the 砖诪讬讟讛, and also in the fifth - fourth year of the 砖诪讬讟讛 and the fifth year of the 砖诪讬讟讛, while in the third year of the 砖诪讬讟讛 and the sixth year of the 砖诪讬讟讛, instead of 诪注砖专 砖谞讬 you would take off 诪注砖专 注谞讬. You would take 诪注砖专, but it would be given to the poor people. Now twice during the cycle of seven, meaning before 驻住讞 of the fourth year and before 驻住讞 of the seventh year, was the 讝诪谉 讛讘讬注讜专, meaning that if you didn't give any of these 诪转谞讜转 away to the people you have to give them to yet, you had to give them by then, and if you didn't give them by then and you weren't able to give them, then you would have to destroy them. That was called the 讝诪谉 讘讬注讜专, and you would have to say a certain 讜讬讚讜讬, a certain confession that we find in the 转讜专讛 in 驻专砖转 讻讬 转讘讜讗. So this was the letter that he wrote to them, that the time of 讘讬注讜专 has come, so make sure to separate the proper 诪注砖专 that you have to. And the reason he wrote to them that they should separate from the place they keep the 讝讬转讬诐 because the main thing that grew in this area were 讝讬转讬诐, were olives, so therefore he specified the 讝讬转讬诐. And then he said, 讜讟讜诇 讗讬讙专转讗 讞讚讗, and take another letter, 讜讻转讜讘, and write in it, 诇讗讞谞讗 讘谞讬 讚专讜诪讗, to our brothers from 讚专讜诐, from the north, 砖诇讜诪讻讜谉 讬砖讙讗, you should have a lot of peace, 诪讜讚注讬谞谉 讗谞讞谞讜 诇讻讜谉, I'm notifying you, 讚讝诪谉 讘讬注讜专讗 诪讟讗, the time of 讘讬注讜专 came, 诇讗驻专讜砖讗 诪注砖专讗 诪注诪专转 砖讜讘诇讬讗, that you have to take off your 诪注砖专 from the sheaves of wheat. Because in this area a lot of wheat grew, so therefore he specified the wheat, but the purpose of the letter was to tell them that the time of 讘讬注讜专 has come, that they have to get rid of all the 诪转谞讜转 that they have to give. 讜讟讜诇 讗讬讙专转讗 讞讚讗, and take another letter, the third one, 讜讻转讜讘, and write in it, 诇讗讞谞讗 讘谞讬 讙诇讜转讗, to our brothers of the 讙诇讜转 讘讘讘诇, in 讘讘诇, 讜诇讗讞谞讗 讚讘诪讚讬, and to our brothers in 诪讚讬, 讜诇砖讗专 讻诇 讙诇讜讜转讗 讚讬砖专讗诇, and to all other Jews who live in all other places of 讙诇讜转, 砖诇讜诪讻讜谉 讬砖讙讗 诇注讜诇诐, forever you should have a lot of peace, 诪讜讚注讬谞谉 讗谞讞谞讜 诇讻讜谉, we are notifying you, 讚讙讜讝诇讬讗 专讻讬讻讬谉, that the birds are still tender, 讜讗讬诪专讬讗 注专拽讬谉, and the sheep are still small, 讜讝讬诪谞讗 讚讗讘讬讘讗 诇讗 诪讟讗, the time of 讗讘讬讘 didn't come, meaning that the grain didn't ripen yet, 讜砖驻专 诪讬诇转讗 讘讗谞驻讗讬 讜讘讗谞驻讬 讞讘专讬讬, and it felt good in my eyes and in the eyes of my friends, we felt it was proper, 讜讗讜住讬驻讬转 注诇 砖转讗 讚讗 讬讜诪讬谉 转诇转讬谉, and we added to this year 30 days. So he notified them that he added another month to the year. But what we do see here is that when he told them that he decided to add another month to the year, he writes that it seemed good in my eyes and in the eyes of my friends. This was the 诇砖讜谉 that 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 told him to write. When we look back before to the 诇砖讜谉 that his son 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 wrote, there he just said it looked good in my eyes and he didn't mention the eyes of his friends. So even though 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 was known to be a 转拽讬祝, nevertheless, he didn't base it only on himself, he also included his friends in the 注讬讘讜专 砖谞讛, while his son 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇, who was known to be an 注谞讜, and nevertheless, he only based it on himself and didn't mention his friends in it. So that's what the 讙诪专讗 wants to say, look at the difference between the previous generation, that even the 转拽讬驻讬诐, even the ones that showed their authority, nevertheless, they showed that they were humble, while the humble people from the second generation, even though they were humble, nevertheless, they showed things of authority. But the 讙诪专讗 says that's no 专讗讬讛, 讚讬诇诪讗 诪讘转专 讚讗注讘专讜讛, maybe the reason 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 wrote it was after he was released from his position him as 谞砖讬讗, because, as we know, because of what 专讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 did to 专讘讬 讬讛讜砖注, he was released from his position as 谞砖讬讗. He was later reinstated, but not as the complete 谞砖讬讗 himself, but he shared the 谞砖讬讗讜转 with 专讘讬 讗诇注讝专 讘谉 注讝专讬讛. So, after he was released from his 谞砖讬讗讜转, maybe then he learned so to speak his lesson, and therefore then he became more humble, and he added these words that he doesn't base it on himself, but also included his friends in it. That's the way 专砖"讬 learns. 转讜住驻讜转 learns that the 驻砖讟 in the 讙诪专讗 is that after he was released from his 谞砖讬讗讜转, and he shared his 谞砖讬讗讜转 with 专讘讬 讗诇注讝专 讘谉 注讝专讬讛, so here he had to write that it also was based on the feeling of his friends, because he was not the only 谞砖讬讗. When he was the only 谞砖讬讗, or one that is the only 谞砖讬讗, so then he could write that he decided, and that's what he did, because it depends on the 谞砖讬讗, as we learned before. But now that he became a 谞砖讬讗 together with 专讘讬 讗诇注讝专 讘谉 注讝专讬讛, so he had to add that it wasn't he himself that decided, but it was also based on the decision of his

Why send letters about 讘讬注讜专 to Galilee?

friends, which meant mainly 专讘讬 讗诇注讝专 讘谉 注讝专讬讛, because he was also the 谞砖讬讗. But the 诪讛专砖"讗 asks a question here that why did he have to notify the people from 讙诇讬诇 讛注诇讬讜谉 and 讙诇讬诇 讛转讞转讜谉, or the people from 讚专讜诐, that it is the year of 讘讬注讜专? Didn't they know which year of the 砖诪讬讟讛 it was? Everyone knows that the fourth year of the 砖诪讬讟讛 and the seventh year of 砖诪讬讟讛 is the year of 讘讬注讜专, and that's something that everyone knows beforehand. Why did they have to send them that letter? And another question: What was the connection between these two letters with the third letter when he notified the people from the 讙诇讜转 that he made an 注讬讘讜专 砖谞讛? They seem to be two separate 注谞讬谞讬诐, and from this 讙诪专讗, when he told them to write all three things together, seems like there was some connection between the two things. And the 诪讛专砖"讗 answers that the 驻砖讟 is that when he notified the people from 讙诇讬诇 讛注诇讬讜谉 and 讙诇讬诇 讛转讞转讜谉 and the people from 讚专讜诐 concerning the 讘讬注讜专, it is also in connection to the 注讬讘讜专 讛砖谞讛. What he meant to tell them was that he was 诪注讘专 the year, and therefore they have another month till the 讘讬注讜专, because the 讘讬注讜专 depends on 驻住讞, before 驻住讞 of the fourth and of the seventh year. So, what he told them was that we added another month to the year, so you have more time till the 讘讬注讜专. And that's why he sent this letter to them together with the letter he sent to the people of 讙诇讜转 about the 注讬讘讜专 砖谞讛, because it's the same idea. To them, he notified that general thing, that he added another month to the year. And to the people of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, he notified that since he added another month to the year, they have more time till the 讘讬注讜专. Then the

Three reasons the sages could intercalate the year

讙诪专讗 continues, 转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 注诇 砖诇砖讛 讚讘专讬诐 诪注讘专讬谉 讗转 讛砖谞讛, because of three things the 讞讻诪讬诐 would be 诪注讘专 the year: 注诇 讛讗讘讬讘, because of the ripening of the grain, if that didn't ripen, so that was a reason for them to be 诪注讘专 the year; 讜注诇 驻讬专讜转 讛讗讬诇谉, and because of the fruit of the tree. You have to bring 讘讬讻讜专讬诐 on 砖讘讜注讜转, and 讘讬讻讜专讬诐 is from the fruit of the tree. Now, if they see, in the time of 讗讚专, that the fruit is not going to be ripe by the time 砖讘讜注讜转 comes around, and 诪诪讬诇讗 the 讗讬讚谉 will not be able to bring the fruit of the tree for as 讘讬讻讜专讬诐 on 砖讘讜注讜转, and that would mean that they would have to make a special trip to bring their fruit to 讬专讜砖诇讬诐 as 讘讬讻讜专讬诐. So, because of that, the 讞讻诪讬诐 would be 诪注讘专 the year, so then the fruit should become ripe before 砖讘讜注讜转. And the third thing is 讜注诇 讛转拽讜驻讛, because of the season. Because we know that the Jewish year is based on the moon, while the seasons are based on the sun. Now the 讚讬谉 is that the 讬诪讬诐 讟讜讘讬诐 depend on the seasons. The 转讜专讛 says that 驻住讞 should be in the season of spring, and 住讜讻讜转 should be in the season of autumn, which we call in 诇砖讜谉 拽讜讚砖 that 驻住讞 has to be in 转拽讜驻转 谞讬住谉, while 住讜讻讜转 has to be in 转拽讜驻转 转砖专讬. Now, if the 讞砖讘讜谉 was that the 转拽讜驻讛 before the 转拽讜驻讛 of 谞讬住谉, which is called the 转拽讜驻讛 of 讟讘转, the season of 讟讘转, which is the season of winter, is not finished yet by the time 驻住讞 comes around, because as we said before, the seasons depend on the sun, while the calendar depends on the moon, and the difference between the year of the sun and the year of the moon, as we know, is in close to 11 days, so therefore it would come out that sometimes the season of winter, which is 转拽讜驻转 讟讘转, would not be finished before 驻住讞 comes, that would come out that 驻住讞 would be in 转拽讜驻转 讟讘转, in winter, rather than in 转拽讜驻转 谞讬住谉, in spring. And the same would be concerning 住讜讻讜转, that sometimes the 转拽讜驻讛 of 转诪讜讝, which is the 转拽讜驻讛 of summer, would not be over before 住讜讻讜转 would come. And we know that 住讜讻讜转 has to be in the 转拽讜驻讛 of autumn, which is called the 转拽讜驻讛 of 转砖专讬. So, this would be a reason for the 讞讻诪讬诐 to add another month, so by then, certainly the 转拽讜驻讛 of 谞讬住谉 would start. meaning spring would start before 驻住讞, and the 转拽讜驻讛 of 转砖专讬, which is autumn, would start before 住讜讻讜转. The

When two of three conditions require a leap month

讙诪专讗 says, 注诇 砖谞讬诐 诪讛诐 诪注讘专讬谉, for two out of these three things. If two of these three things happened, then they would be 诪注讘专. 讜注诇 讗讞转 诪讛诐 讗讬谉 诪注讘专讬谉, but for one of them, if only one of these three things happened, then the 讞讻诪讬诐 would not be 诪注讘专 the year. And then the 讙诪专讗 says, 讜讘讝诪谉 砖讛讗讘讬讘 讗讞讚 诪讛谉, 讛讻诇 砖诪讞讬谉. If one of the two things was 讗讘讬讘, was the reason that the grain was not ripe yet, everyone would be happy. Meaning that people wouldn't mind that 驻住讞 will come a month later, because normally, people should mind that 驻住讞 will be later, because we know that till 驻住讞, when they bring the 拽专讘谉 讛注讜诪专, you're not allowed to eat 讞讚砖. You're not allowed to eat from the new grain that grew till after they bring the 拽专讘谉 讛注讜诪专 on 驻住讞. Now, if 驻住讞 is pushed off for a month, that means that they can't use the new 转讘讜讗讛 for another month. So, if there would be two other reasons why they pushed off the year, added another month, in other words, if the two reasons were because of the fruit of the tree and because of the 转拽讜驻讛, because of the season, while the grain was already ripe, so then people weren't happy, because that means that they have the grain already there, and still they can't use it for another month. But if one of the two reasons was because the 转讘讜讗讛 wasn't ripe yet, so then people didn't mind, because anyway it's not ripe. So, it doesn't prolong the prohibition on the fruit that they want to eat, because they can't eat it anyway, because it is not ripe. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues,

R' Shimon on the season as a sole reason

And he didn't say exactly what he meant when he said, because of the season. 讗讬讘注讬讗 诇讛讜, so the question that was asked was, 注诇 讛转拽讜驻讛 砖诪讞讬谉, what did he mean to add when he said 注诇 讛转拽讜驻讛? That he argued on the previous opinion, and he said that if one of the two reasons was the season, people were also happy, 讗讜 注诇 讛转拽讜驻讛 诪注讘专讬谉, or what he meant was to argue that before we said that the only time they would make the 注讬讘讜专 is if you have two out of the three, so he came to argue, and he said no, even if the 转拽讜驻讛 itself was the reason, it is enough for them to be 诪注讘专 the year. The reason why the 讙诪专讗 thought that maybe he meant to say that if one of the two reasons was the 转拽讜驻讛, people were happy, so 专砖状讬 explains, because if the 转拽讜驻讛 would be in its proper time, and the reason they would be 诪注讘专 the year would be for other reasons, so it'd come out that 住讜讻讜转 would be deeper into the winter. So, when people would be going home from 讚注诇讬讬讛 诇专讙诇 for 住讜讻讜转, they would be traveling during the wintertime, and that's not so good. But if one of the reasons was the 转拽讜驻讛, so it comes out that by pushing it off, 住讜讻讜转 would not be deeper into the winter, because anyway the 转拽讜驻讛 came very late, so then people didn't mind the fact that they pushed off the year, because they still wouldn't be traveling home in middle of the winter. So, that's what he meant when he said 注诇 讛转拽讜驻讛, that not only if the reason that was pushed off because of the 讗讘讬讘, that's when people were happy, but also if one of the two reasons was the 转拽讜驻讛, that's also a reason for people to be happy. Is that what he meant? Or he meant that the 转拽讜驻讛 itself is a good enough reason for them to push off the year, that you don't have to have two reasons, if one of the reasons is 转拽讜驻讛, that itself is enough. And the reason why the 讙诪专讗 felt that the 转拽讜驻讛 itself should be enough, so 专砖状讬 says, because the fact that 讬讜诐 讟讜讘 has to be in the time of the 转拽讜驻讛 is a 讚讬谉 诪讚讗讜专讬讬转讗, is a 讚讬谉 from the 转讜专讛. And therefore, the 讙诪专讗 feels maybe 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 meant to say that since the 转拽讜驻讛 is 讚讗讜专讬讬转讗, that is a good enough reason for them to add another month. While 转讜住驻讜转 says that that is not the reason, because if the reason would be because this is 讚讗讜专讬讬转讗, so 转讜住驻讜转 says the fact that the 转讘讜讗讛 has to be ripe is also 讚讗讜专讬讬转讗, because the 转讜专讛 says 砖诪讜专 讗转 讞讚砖 讛讗讘讬讘. So therefore, 转讜住驻讜转 says that the reason why the 讙诪专讗 felt that the 转拽讜驻讛 itself would be good enough that for that they should be 诪注讘专 the year, is because there you cannot make a mistake.

Grain ripeness and its role in postponing Pesach

Concerning the other reasons, concerning the ripeness of the 转讘讜讗讛, or whether the fruit of the tree will be ripe on time, you can make a mistake. When they look at it, they feel that it will not be ripe on time, and in truth it will be ripe on time. It's hard to calculate, hard to judge. But concerning the 转拽讜驻讛, you can't make a mistake, it's a very easy 讞砖讘讜谉, and there's nothing that you have to judge or estimate, it is just the 讞砖讘讜谉 you have to make when the 转拽讜驻讛 comes out. So, since this is something that they can't make a mistake, so the 讙诪专讗 feels maybe that's what 专讘谉 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 讙诪诇讬讗诇 said, that because of the 转拽讜驻讛 itself, you're allowed to be 诪注讘专 讛砖谞讛. And the 讙诪专讗 says 转讬拽讜, this question remains without an answer. Concerning one of the things that the 讙诪专讗 said that is a reason to be 诪注讘专 讛砖谞讛, which is the 讗讘讬讘, if the 转讘讜讗讛 isn't ripe yet, so the simple 驻砖讟 why this would be a reason for them to be 诪注讘专 the year is because the 转讜专讛 says 讞讜讚砖 讛讗讘讬讘, that 驻住讞 should be in the month when the 转讘讜讗讛 is ripe. So therefore, if the 转讘讜讗讛 isn't ripe yet, this is a reason to be 诪注讘专 the 砖谞讛. But 专砖讬 says that there is another reason given: that since on 驻住讞 you have to bring the 拽专讘谉 注讜诪专 from the new 转讘讜讗讛, so if the 转讘讜讗讛 isn't ripe yet, so they won't be able to bring the 拽专讘谉 注讜诪专. So therefore, this is a reason to push off 驻住讞 for another month, so by the time 驻住讞 comes around, the 转讘讜讗讛 will be ripe and they will be able to bring the 注讜诪专 from the new 转讘讜讗讛. But 专砖讬 says that this reason is not a good reason, because later on the 讙诪专讗 says that when we judge to see whether it is considered that the 转讘讜讗讛 is ripe or not, we judge two areas out of three. There were three areas in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, so we look at two out of the three, and if two out of the three were not ripe yet, so that is considered that the 转讘讜讗讛 is not ripe, and this is a reason to be 诪注讘专 the year. So it comes out from that 讙诪专讗 that even if in one area it was ripe, we still sometimes could consider it as if it wasn't ripe. Now, if we're going to give the reason because we won't be able to bring the 注讜诪专 from the new crop, that is not true. Since in one place it is already ripe, so why can't we bring the 注讜诪专 from that place? Even though the 讚讬谉 is 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 we have to bring the 注讜诪专 from 讬讛讜讚讛, and it's possible that in 讬讛讜讚讛 it is not ripe yet, so we will have to bring the 注讜诪专 from a different area, but 讘讚讬注讘讚 we could bring the 注讜诪专 from a different area too. It is only 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 that we must bring it from 讬讛讜讚讛, but 讘讚讬注讘讚 if we can't get it from 讬讛讜讚讛, we could bring it from someplace else. So if in 讬讛讜讚讛 and another place it is not ripe, but in the third place it is ripe, still we could bring the 注讜诪专 from that third place. So why should this be a reason for them to push off the 驻住讞 by adding another month? So therefore 专砖讬 says this is not the reason the 讙诪专讗 had in mind why if the 转讘讜讗讛 is not ripe we add another month. The reason is because the 转讜专讛 says 讞讜讚砖 讛讗讘讬讘, and if in two out of three places it is not ripe yet, it is considered that the time of 讗讘讬讘 didn't come, and therefore this is a reason for them to push off 驻住讞 and add another month to the year. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues,

Three regions of Israel determine intercalation

转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 注诇 砖诇砖讛 讗专爪讜转 诪注讘专讬谉 讗转 讛砖谞讛, because of three lands, meaning three areas in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇, you have to be 诪注讘专 the year. In other words, when we look to see whether the 转讘讜讗讛 is ripe yet or not, so we would have to look at these three areas: 讬讛讜讚讛 and 注讘专 讛讬专讚谉 and the 讙诇讬诇. 讬讛讜讚讛 and the other side of the 讬专讚谉 and the area of 讙诇讬诇. 注诇 砖转讬诐 诪讛诐 诪注讘专讬谉. If two out of the three areas the 转讘讜讗讛 isn't ripe yet, they would be 诪注讘专 the year. 注诇 讗讞转 诪讛谉 讗讬谉 诪注讘专讬谉. If in one of the three it wasn't ripe, but the other two it was ripe, so then they would not be 诪注讘专 the year. And the reason for that is because when do we consider it 讗讘讬讘 or not depends on the majority of 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇. If two out of three in 讗专抓 讬砖专讗诇 it was ripe, we would consider that the 讗讘讬讘 came. If two out of the three wasn't ripe, then we consider it that the 讗讘讬讘 didn't come yet. And then the 讙诪专讗 says, 讜讘讝诪谉 砖讬讛讜讚讛 讗讞转 诪讛谉, and if 讬讛讜讚讛 was one of the two places that wasn't ripe yet, then 讛讻诇 砖诪讞讬诐, everyone was happy, 砖讗讬谉 注讜诪专 讘讗 讗诇讗 诪讬讛讜讚讛, because the 注讜诪专 has to come from 讬讛讜讚讛. 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 you should bring the 注讜诪专 from 讬讛讜讚讛. Now, if in 讬讛讜讚讛 it would be ripe, and two other places were not ripe, by the time they would have to bring the 注讜诪专, which would be a month later, the 转讘讜讗讛 of 讬讛讜讚讛 would be dried up already. And we have to bring soft, fresh 转讘讜讗讛. 诪诪讬诇讗 they wouldn't be able to bring the 注讜诪专 from the 转讘讜讗讛 of 讬讛讜讚讛. They would have to bring the 注讜诪专 from the 转讘讜讗讛 of another place. And since 诇讻转讞讬诇讛 you should bring the 转讘讜讗讛 from 讬讛讜讚讛, so therefore, if 讬讛讜讚讛 was one of the places that wasn't ripe, then the people were happy, because the 注讜诪专 will be able to be brought from 讬讛讜讚讛. But if 讬讛讜讚讛 was ripe and the other two places were not ripe, so then the 注讜诪专 would have to be brought from the other places, because by the time it would come to bring the 注讜诪专 the 讬讛讜讚讛 ones would not be fresh, and therefore you couldn't bring from 讬讛讜讚讛, then the people were not happy. That's one 驻砖讟 专砖讬 gives. Another 驻砖讟 is that if 讬讛讜讚讛 was one of the places, and that is why they pushed it off, so the people who saw that the 注讜诪专 was being brought a month later, and therefore they couldn't eat from the new crop for another month, didn't feel so bad, because they saw that in 讬讛讜讚讛, the place where you bring the 注讜诪专 from, it wasn't ready yet. So therefore, they didn't feel that it's being pushed off for no reason. But if in 讬讛讜讚讛 it was ready, and the reason they pushed it off because in other two places it wasn't ready, so it seemed to them as if they're prolonging the 讗讬住讜专 of eating the 转讘讜讗讛 for no reason, because here we see in 讬讛讜讚讛 it's ready, the place where you bring the 注讜诪专 from it's ready, and still we don't bring it. So it seems as if they're prolonging it for no reason. So that was harder on the people. So therefore, if 讬讛讜讚讛 was not ready, and that was the reason why they pushed it off, the people were happy. Then the 讙诪专讗 continues,

Intercalation only in Judah and only by day

转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 讗讬谉 诪注讘专讬谉 讗转 讛砖谞讛 讗诇讗 讘讬讛讜讚讛, you can't make can 注讬讘讜专 砖谞讛, you can't add a month to the year, only the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 of 讬讛讜讚讛. 讜讗诐 注讬讘专讜讛 讘讙诇讬诇, if the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 did it in 讙诇讬诇, 诪注讜讘专转, nevertheless 讘讚讬注讘讚 it is 诪注讜讘专, and it is considered a leap year. 讛注讬讚 讞谞谞讬讛 讗讬砖 讗讜谞讜, but 讞谞谞讬讛, the man from 讗讜谞讜 testified, 砖讗诐 注讬讘专讜讛 讘讙诇讬诇 讗讬谞讛 诪注讜讘专转, that if they did it in 讙诇讬诇, it is not 诪注讜讘专, even 讘讚讬注讘讚 it is not 诪注讜讘专. He argues on the first opinion. 讗诪专 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛 讘专讬讛 讚专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 驻讝讬, so 专讘讬 讬讛讜讚讛, the son of 专讘讬 砖诪注讜谉 讘谉 驻讝讬 says, 诪讗讬 讟注诪讗 讚讞谞谞讬讛 讗讬砖 讗讜谞讜, what is the reason of 讞谞谞讬讛 讗讬砖 讗讜谞讜 who holds that even 讘讚讬注讘讚 if the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 did it in 讙诇讬诇, it is not 诪注讜讘专? Because 讗诪专 拽专讗, the 驻住讜拽 says, 诇砖讻谞讜 转讚专砖讜 讜讘讗转 砖诪讛. In the place where He dwells, that's where you should look for Him, and you should come there. So we learn out, 讻诇 讚专讬砖讛 砖讗转讛 讚讜专砖, any 讚专砖讛 that you 讚专砖谉, anything that you look for, anything that you look for 讛砖诐, 诇讗 讬讛讬讜 讗诇讗 讘砖讻谞讜 砖诇 诪拽讜诐, which should only be in the neighborhood of 讛砖诐, which is in 讬专讜砖诇讬诐, meaning in 讬讛讜讚讛. 转谞讜 专讘谞谉, the 专讘谞谉 learned, 讗讬谉 诪注讘专讬谉 讗转 讛砖谞讛 讗诇讗 讘讬讜诐, you cannot 诪注讘专 the year only at daytime, you can only do it during the day. 讜讗诐 注讬讘专讜讛 讘诇讬诇讛 讗讬谞讛 诪注讜讘专转, if you did it at night, even 讘讚讬注讘讚 it is not 诪注讜讘专. 讜讗讬谉 诪拽讚砖讬谉 讗转 讛讞讚砖 讗诇讗 讘讬讜诐, and you cannot make 拽讬讚讜砖 讛讞讜讚砖, meaning you cannot sanctify the new moon, make the day into 专讗砖 讞讜讚砖, only if you do it during the day.

Night versus day sanctification of the new month

讜讗诐 拽讬讚砖讜讛 讘诇讬诇讛 讗讬谞讜 诪拽讜讚砖, if they did it at night, it is not 诪拽讜讚砖, even 讘讚讬注讘讚 it is no good. 讗诪专 专讘 讗讘讗, so 专讘 讗讘讗 said, 诪讗讬 拽专讗, what is the 驻住讜拽 that tells us that? The 驻住讜拽 says, 转拽注讜 讘讞讚砖 砖讜驻专, you should blow 砖讜驻专 during the month, meaning on 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛, 讘讻住讛 诇讬讜诐 讞讙谞讜, in the time when it is hidden to the day of our 讬讜诐 讟讜讘. Now, what is hidden? It means a day that the moon is hidden. 讗讬讝讛讜 讞讙 砖讛讞讚砖 诪转讻住讛 讘讜, which is a 讬讜诐 讟讜讘 that the moon is hidden on that day? The 讬诪讬诐 讟讜讘讬诐 mainly are in middle of the month. 驻住讞 is the 15th day of the month. 住讜讻讜转 is the 15th day of the month. Now, which 讬讜诐 讟讜讘 is a time when the moon is covered, which means we do not see the moon during the first day of the month? 讛讜讬 讗讜诪专 讝讛 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛. So which one is that? We say it's 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛. 讜讻转讬讘, and concerning this the 转讜专讛 says, 讻讬 讞拽 诇讬砖专讗诇 讛讜讗, it is a law for the 讬讬讚谉, 诪砖驻讟 诇讗诇拽讬 讬注拽讘, it is a 诪砖驻讟, a judgment to the God of 讬注拽讘, to the God of the Jews. So we see that concerning this idea that the moon is covered and it becomes into a 讬讜诐 讟讜讘, meaning when we establish 专讗砖 讛砖谞讛, the 转讜专讛 refers to it, the 驻住讜拽 refers to it with the term 诪砖驻讟, judgment. So we learn out from here, 诪讛 诪砖驻讟 讘讬讜诐 讗祝 拽讬讚讜砖 讛讞讚砖 讘讬讜诐. Just like judgment is during the day, you could only judge 讚讬谞讬 诪诪讜谞讜转, the 讘讬转 讚讬谉 could only sit to judge during the day, so too when it comes to make 拽讬讚讜砖 讛讞讜讚砖, it could only be done during the day. So from here he sees that even 讘讚讬注讘讚, if you 诪拽讚砖 the 讞讜讚砖 at night, it is not 诪拽讜讚砖.
